Children looking over back fence - AIBU to find this annoying

Part of me thinks it’s part of living in a built up area but I myself have kids and do not allow them to watch over into the other neighbours gardens.

So a new family have moved into the house that backs into our garden. Their children climb up and hang over the 6ft fence and shout things. Nothing major but I don’t want to sit in my garden and have a random child hanging over the back fence.

I have to close the conservatory blinds as the garden is really small and they can see us watching tv or having a cup of tea if we don’t.

I’ve said to the kids, don’t watch over at us, we don’t like it but their reply is their dad says they can, it’s their fence. (Double sided). No point getting into a discussion about it with a child. Dad is standing there but says nothing.

I think I would get childish with them and tell them go away, we don't like you Blush

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 01/09/2020 19:58

Put some tin cans on the top of the fence and buy a BB Gun.
Sit in your deckchair, chewing gum, cradling your BB Gun...
(Note : this may be illegal)

Girlyracer · 01/09/2020 19:59

What an idiot their father is. Who brings their kids up to be so fucking ignorant?

Yes, spiky bushes.

slipperywhensparticus · 01/09/2020 20:01

Tell dad he needs to pay for his own TV licence?

Or tell dad you have a passion for French porn and you dont think he wants that conversation with his children then play French language programs loudly

Elsa8 · 01/09/2020 20:02

Pyracantha is a good shout for prickly hedge, we had one in our garden trimmed recently, it was easily 3m tall and has tonnes of thorns!

Brandaris · 01/09/2020 20:06

If you don’t like pyracantha, berberis are very pretty.

willowmelangell · 01/09/2020 20:15

Carefully angled garden parasol?

Branleuse · 01/09/2020 20:16

theyll be back at school next week and winters coming up. You could make plans to extend the fence with a nice trellis and a climbing plant?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 01/09/2020 21:03

Or..... save yourself the money and hassle of buying plants or sticking things to the fence, and go and tell the parents to stop their children staring over the fence at you.

PinkPonyTail · 01/09/2020 21:22

Thanks for the replies.

The fence they are peering over is already 6ft.

Parents told me they deliberately moved the slide to the bottom of their garden so their kids could see Into our garden 🤦‍♀️

Get two naked mannequins. Place in various poses daily. Bet daddy shifts the slide pretty quickly.

Tappering · 01/09/2020 21:57

Put a canvas awning or gazebo up at that end?

Branleuse · 01/09/2020 23:03

Go out and stare at them.

Play classical music in your garden. Apparently when they do this outside shops, kids are less likely to hang about. Nice bit of opera

Thisismytimetoshine · 01/09/2020 23:07

Seriously?!

monkeymonkey2010 · 01/09/2020 23:55

put some potted bamboo along the fence - tall enough to block their view when they peer over....as for their delinquent father, tell him his kids are nosey fuckers and violating your private space.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/09/2020 00:00

You can get motioned activated sprinklers. Just saying.

Giespeace · 02/09/2020 13:28

The parents sound like twats who have bred mini-twats. How sweet. Hmm

HexyAndIKnowIt · 02/09/2020 13:51

Personally I'd just add a trellis to the top if its your fence. That should raise the height, then as others have suggested plants. You can put clumping bamboo in the ground, Fargesia Robusta Pingwu is a good one, but they will grow equally well in pots.

By the time something like pyracantha has reached 6ft the kids will have grown out of looking over fences. It's fast, but not that fast.

Knittedfairies · 02/09/2020 14:00

I'd find it annoying too. A carefully angled shade sail might work.

User43210 · 02/09/2020 14:37

I like the hose/sprinkler idea. Maybe that high pitch screeching that they will hate (it's your garden you're playing it in, after all) or throw a tennis ball or bigger against the fence so it wobbles it and even accidentally hit them in the face with it sometimes.

Or you could teach them some really awful swear words and dirty jokes, depending on the parents, they may get really embarrassed when they hear them repeat them, especially to other adults. The kids sound like the type to purposely do this often. Not sure how chavvy the parents are though.

User43210 · 02/09/2020 14:37

Or use a mirror and the sun/a torch and blind them each time

BluebellsGreenbells · 02/09/2020 14:42

Become a nudist!

Defiantly plants! Something fast growing.

pyracantha. Not this if you have kids, the thorns are lethal!

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 02/09/2020 14:45

Stick a sprinkler on

BameChange123 · 03/09/2020 02:06

Spray the letters C-you-Next-TTuesday very big using temporary snow spray or in paint you can wash off on the wall facing the fence Barlow down so they can only see it if they are looking into your garden and let them ask daddy what it means! 😈

RedHelenB · 03/09/2020 05:37

I'd move elsewhere. If the father has told you he's deliberately moved the slide so they can look at you can you imagine what they ll be like as teenagers?
