To ask for practical packed lunch ideas for one who loved a hot lunch ?

As above. Hot lunches now not on offer othe than panini or toastie things which often have cheese. He hates cheese and butter and ham so I'm doing packed lunch until the kitchen opens up again at school.
He's requested a chicken wrap. Fine but can't have that every day can he? He is expecting the smogasbord if treats he gets in a holiday club pack up but it's not allowed or healthy of course.
So I'm stuck. Doesn't like hummus or sauce or dip type things. No tuna or egg. I've got a food flask so can do soup but what else?
All ideas welcome. I have no time for making pinwheel wraps or things to look like faces sadly!

@polkadotpjs if he likes chicken, what about chicken wrap one day, a chicken sandwich another, chicken and pasta the day after etc? 😊

BlenheimOrange · 31/08/2020 22:14

Nothing wrong with a chicken wrap every day if he’d eat it. Alternate with ham? Maybe those packs of sliced beef?
I remember the sheer joy of an occasional leftover-sausages-and-ketchup sandwich when I was at school Grin

Tomorrow is chicken wrap, cucumber and some fruit with maybe a mini roll. Or will I be reported to SS for a mini roll? I've missed the boat here in what is ok and not.

Most Primary schools won’t allow mini rolls.

I had a chicken sandwich every day at school for two years (fussy eater back then) it wasn’t an issue.

You could do cold cooked pork or beef to ring the changes from chicken, or smoked fish if he likes it?

Other ideas: Pasta salad, potato salad, cous cous salad, chickpea salad. All can have all sorts of things mixed in. Or if he likes totally plain food, just cold pasta or cold potatoes with other bits.

Would he have fish in a wrap - smoked salmon, mackerel, prawns?

Nothing wrong with a chicken wrap every day to be honest. Add a few different things - cucumber, sweet corn, tomatoes, blueberries, olives, lettuce, peppers...

DC was very happy with a tub of cold pasta - I mix in some cucumber, tomatoes, cheese, ham, chicken, prawns, cooked peas - whatever we have as leftovers. Pasta, Philadelphia and pineapple was a favourite for a while. Couscous also works well. If DC is old enough a flask with some soup or baked beans might also be an option.

Chicken drumsticks or thighs in a KFC like coating or teriyaki/sticky coating? Savoury rice, coldslaw, cous cous or salad to accompany the chicken?

Vietnamese summer rolls with chicken or plain veg served with a simple satay sauce? Lots of youtube videos on how to roll them.

Home-made sushi? Again, lots of youtube videos and if stored in an airtight container, are fine of the following day

How about a food flask? You can microwave something already prepared in the morning and pop it in, should be plenty hot enough at lunchtime. Mine have taken in macaroni cheese, chilli and rice, soup...

Another vote for a pot of pasta with your child's favourite toppings. Alternatively, does your DC like pizza? You could make a mini pizza, either home-made or you could get those pizza bases and add toppings? Instead of the mini-roll, how about a mini-muffin? Can easily make these with your favourite ingredients or buy from the shops. If your child does prefer food hot to cold, do mention it to school staff, they might well be able to ping it in the microwave for a couple of minutes to warm up.

I'd better check if the mini roll was permitted! He ate everything else I think
He had melon and grapes too. Maybe they let me off!

I hope it was , I still haven’t forgiven my eldest daughters school for removing three celebrations chocolates from her lunch box on her birthday in 2004!
