Arrival at Durham University

Hello:

Any other mums out there wondering when their DC will get a time slot to move into their college? Anyone know general dates? I am assuming with C-19 we will only get a short time and maybe not even be allowed inside with them? How did it work last year? Any advice is helpful, thank you.

It'll depend on the college. DD last year was given an early slot, and the way it worked was there were lots of 2nd/3rd years on hand to help unload quickly. I don't think that will happen this year, as I think dd has been told not to come until after Freshers' week.

We stayed overnight as she had to be there first thing, but we have relatives not too far away.

My nephew has had his details for Leeds with very clear guidance on things they can and can’t do. Only one parent can help them take stuff up to room and once stuff has been left there (at the door of flat), then it’s up to student to unpack themselves, parent can’t stay and help.

Housewifehustle · 31/08/2020 15:31

Thank you. Witchend how soon in advance did you receive your date/time slot? Do you remember?

LadyPenelope68 - I imagine it would be similar - honestly, anything we can do to keep C-19 out of the halls I'm all for it - even if I have to drop DD at the train station. : ) We are all learning to adapt. But would be nice to have a date/time.

Manchester University herewondering the same! Haven't received any information, and as we haven't got a car, we're traveling by trainboth parents are going to have to come to help with the amount of stuff! (But I guess one can wait with the stuff on the sidewalk while the other helps lug things upstairs)

I went to Durham, although it was a few (10!) years ago now. I seem to remember that we were one of the last unis to start, right at the end of September with lectures not beginning til the first week in October.

I loved Durham, I’m sure your DC will have a great time there.

We haven't been told yet . Waiting ...

I imagine that students will be dropped off with 1 hour slots and help to carry stuff to room then parent to leave or that parents won't be allowed in the halls at all but to pull car up outside

We live a long drive away too far for there and back in a day

I doubt there will be places for parents to be able to socially distance go for coffee, lunch or facilities as Durham is a small city

Sparticuscaticus · 31/08/2020 15:54

I meant *enough places for all parents to socially distance go for facilities

sobersides · 31/08/2020 16:00

My DD is going to a different uni but only got her moving slot on Friday 28th August for Thursday 10th September. It's literally drop and go, one person only.
It's a complete PITA as it's a midweek slot, late in the day and I'm going to be pushing it to get time off now. The arrival card has clearly stated slots aren't negotiable.

I live in Durham. There are plenty of cafes, bars, restaurants and pubs. About the only businesses that are left there !

Spoken to dd. She says all the colleges are different, but it will be different this year anyway. Her college gave everyone 90 minutes to move in over the course of a day, this year they're moving people in over 4 days.
She says she got the info in the welcome pack, which she had by now, but a lot of people haven't had the welcome pack yet, or have only had part, after the A-level mess. She also said she got it by post, but this year it seems to be email.

crikeycrumbsblimey · 31/08/2020 16:22

Durham doesn’t start for over a month and they are likely still trying to sort out the mess left from the governments fuck up of Alevels. They won’t have had time to sort out slots for cars even in a normal year by this point. Bailey Colleges are heavily restricted anyway due to space.

Term dates will have been published years ago - check the website.

DS went back on the 20th, but he's an RA so had to arrive early. He's now helping other students move in. We drove him up and were allowed to help get his stuff into his room. He went off and got tested within two hours of arrival.

DD's uni decided a month ago to do fully remote instruction, which was a big disappointment for her as it's her first year. I'm told the cat visited her French class last week. Grin

DishingOutDone · 31/08/2020 16:44

There is a uni thread in higher education might help?

We live in Durham. You can’t move for coffee shops, restaurants and pubs. There’s little else in the city these days.

Can you get tested without symptoms now?
Housewifehustle · 31/08/2020 17:02

Oh, this is all very useful, if only to know I'm not the only mum out there wondering and waiting patiently for answers. Thank you!!

It would be most appreciated if anyone gets their move-in time slot at Durham please let me know so I can check in case we've missed seeing ours in an e-mail.

I'm in the US. Uni's here that are having students back are organizing their own testing privately, typically upon arrival then once a week going forward. And they test all students so that anyone who tests positive can be quarantined.
