Birthday present ideas for family member?

Hi everyone,

Sorry this is quite a boring AIBU! I wondered if you might be able to help please.

I’ve got a very close family member’s birthday coming up next month and am a bit stuck on what to buy.

Over the last few years, I’ve tended to buy him and his DP a voucher for a meal out somewhere or tickets to a concert/music performance.

They’ve said how much they enjoy receiving these, and I started buying them a few years ago as I thought it would be nice to give them something like that as the family member would never buy anything like that for himself - he’s very generous when buying for other people but lives quite frugally.

This year, due to Covid, I don’t think it would be a good idea to buy a restaurant/experience voucher or concert ticket, as the family member has been shielding due to health problems, so going out to a big event might be risky, and even if I can book a nice event or restaurant he’d enjoy, it might close or get cancelled/postponed if we get a second wave.

In terms of other present ideas, he doesn’t really enjoy reading or watching TV. I was thinking a nice hamper with food and drink he likes might be a nice compromise though.

Just posting in case anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks!

Some restaurants are doing home deliveries but that would depend where you are I guess - or more where he is

A hamper sounds nice too.

Food sounds like a good compromise - but don't get one of the usual "gift" hampers full of dull pre-packaged biscuits and stale tea.

Consider a cheese hamper from a producer, if he likes cheese.

Or a subscription for weekly/monthly coffee bean delivery?

Or a whole, fresh salmon / turbot from one of the online fishmongers.

Or a case of wine / whisky according to budget and inclination.

(I'm also not planning any imminent restaurant visits but would be happy with any of these gifts.)

Restaurants would still do take away perhaps? Other wise maybe a voucher for some alcohol? Voucher for ebay. Voucher for whatever really. Vouchers are the best.

Something for the garden maybe? A nice bench or a tree or plant? Something unusual and a bit different they could enjoy whilst being at home.
