I don't understand how she is being culturally appropriate for wearing Jamaican bikini and wearing her hair in a Jamaican style in honour of Notting Hill carnival?
She doesn't seem to be doing it to offend anyone?

Call me ignorant but I would like to understand why some people are kicking off? Seems it mainly African-Americans that are offended and Jamaicans are fine with it.

Seems we can't do anything without upsetting or offending anyone?

For context, I'm white British female.

@stoptheworldiwant2getoff I too straight my hair (I’m British black Caribbean) and I prefer the look of it too.

Are we not allowed to choose our own hair now and have to wear traditionally black hairstyles?! I have also gasp coloured my hair a warm honey brown before too and not because someone commented on my black hair or I’m a slave to white standards of beauty, I just fancied it. Confused

@TweeBree

Would love to hear from any Jamaican Mumsnet members.
Not offended at all.

I’m British Caribbean (although Barbados) and I also am not offended in the slightest.

I grew up practically a few streets away from Adele and this hairstyle was regularly worn by black girls in the area (and then loads of others in the 90's). There was no shame or looking down. It's just a hairstyle.

The Jamaican motto is out of many, come one, so all this nonsense calling her out isn't really 'in the spirit' of Jamaica.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/09/2020 15:05

I do think it is an issue of context. If Adele was wearing the style to look edgy knowing full well that she would get a positive reaction where a black woman might get criticised in work for the same style then it would be problematic.
However, it was a clear reference to Carnival. I am white British but used to live by the Carnival route. I would happily sit in Meanwhile Gardens eating salt fish fritters with the DC as the floats went past. If you live in the area it really is part of your life experience and something amazing to celebrate. It was such a shame it had to be cancelled.

@dayswithaY

I do wonder why Adele gets a pass on this one when the Kardashians and David Beckham have all been criticised for having similar hairstyles. David Lammy and Naomi Campbell both saying "Leave her alone, she's from Tottenham." Why are they so quick to defend her?
David Lammy being from that area might have something to do with it.

Where was the photo taken?

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 01/09/2020 16:53

LioneIRichTea ⬅️ Best mn moniker I’ve seen in yonks

LioneIRichTea · 02/09/2020 14:39

Thank you @SentientAndCognisant😀 I have to say though, not as good as @QuentinsQuarantino (which I saw in another thread) 😂

SummerSummerSummertime · 06/09/2020 13:12

It's TOTALLY ridiculous.
Who decides which people own what hairstyles, fashions, shades of skin???

But, also I don't think Adele was very well advised on that outfit considering the current climate... or did she know perfectly well what would happen....? All publicity is good publicity right... 🤷🏾‍♀️

JalapenoDave · 06/09/2020 15:12

People seem to be offended by absolutely anything and everything these days. I'm not a fan of Adele but she wasn't wearing blackface or mocking black/Jamaican culture. She was celebrating it. Really don't understand the hate.

TheEmpressOfUtterBastardry · 06/09/2020 19:44

Makes no sense to me either.

OverTheRainbow88 · 06/09/2020 19:51

If you have ever experience hair discrimination then it would make sense to you

Deadposhtory · 06/09/2020 20:37

I thought this thread was about the weight she has lost...

OverTheRainbow88 · 07/09/2020 05:56

Oh the ignorance. I was hoping some people may have used lockdown to do some reading and broaden their horizons... oh how I was wrong.

angieb89 · 07/09/2020 09:14

@deadposhtory if you read my original post and the comments you would have seen that it isn't about her weight loss.
