Is this not the most stupid covid rule?!

I understand why you can't try clothes on.
I understand all the rules they all make sense generally.
But I just took DS to Asda to try on plimsoles and we were asked not to by a staff member. It's the rules.

So we can pick up shoes, look at them closely, put them back and pick up more but the second your foot enters them all of a sudden it's a coronavirus risk?!

Yabu

slipperywhensparticus · 31/08/2020 09:43

blunts have food bags over your feet to try them on with maybe duggest that as an option?

I dont personally try on plimsolls just buy a pair in their size

frustrationcentral · 31/08/2020 09:43

You can try on in Clarks if that helps? You just have to be wearing socks

IfIHadAHeart · 31/08/2020 09:53

YABU. The stupidest Covid rule is in M&S where they keep forcing me to take a trolley even when I just want a pint of milk or a sandwich. For social distancing apparently. It seems like a whole lot of unnecessary trolley sanitising to me.

The shoe thing is daft though I agree.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 31/08/2020 09:54

Care to elaborate @araiwa?

@slipperywhensparticus I do usually as well. Just buy the next size up from last time. But I've tried that twice and got it wrong so needed him with me.
I think it's because he's been off and not needed plimsoles in so long I've no idea what size he is and it doesn't marry up to his shoe size.
What worked in the end is trainer size 4 and plimsole size 2. No idea how that worked.

ChangeThePassword · 31/08/2020 09:54

What would your solution be?

Not let anyone touch anything unless they buy it?
Or not take any steps to try to reduce risk of contamination of their products?

If you buy something and return it, they can control when it goes back on the shelf. Places like Clarks can do that too, as they bring you the shoes to try on.

I feel like shops can't win here. People would complain whichever route they took, so they have to take the route that they feel is right.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 31/08/2020 09:55

@IfIHadAHeart that IS ridiculous. As though you are so daft you can't figure out how to social distance without the aid of a trolley?!

OP posts:
Tolleshunt · 31/08/2020 09:57

Nobody’s checking the supermarket aisles to quarantine items people have picked up and put back again.

I would imagine shoes are the absolute lowest minimal risk, but I guess the shops need to be seen to be doing the right thing.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 31/08/2020 09:57

The solution is commons sense @ChangeThePassword.

For example, a top could be pulled over the head passing mucus membranes (eyes, mouth, nose) in which a virus is rife.

So they stop that.

Virus is not rife on a socked foot.

In fact I'd argue that virus is more present on hands (the hands the pick up and look at the shoes) than the foot.

Therefore common sense would mean allowing people to try on shoes.

OP posts:
BendingSpoons · 31/08/2020 09:58

YANBU. You are far more likely to have the virus on your hands than your feet! Unless you cover your mouth with your feet when you cough etc your feet (probably in socks anyway) aren't likely to be passing anything on to the next plimsole wearer.

BillywilliamV · 31/08/2020 09:58

Nah, showering before and after visiting the dentist isvthe stupidest rule I have come across..

ChickensMightFly · 31/08/2020 09:58

Similar in tkmaxx, can't try on because then the clothes have to be quarantined for 72 hours. So you buy the clothes you'd like to try on and take back the ones you don't like... Which then have to be quarantined for 72 hours, so exactly the same but with the middle step of payment and a return visit to the shop.
But I suppose lots will forget to return them or just not bother so likely it does reduce the amount of stuff in quarantine. All part of the crazy situation..

ChangeThePassword · 31/08/2020 10:00

Therefore common sense would mean allowing people to try on shoes

Where does it end? If someone can try on shoes, why not a jacket, after all it's not going on bare skin?

If a jacket is OK, why not a cardigan?

Etc etc.

As I said, they can't win. My point isn't that you are wrong, it's that they will never be right no matter what they do.

nosswith · 31/08/2020 10:03

Some people are so idiotic that they would then try clothes on having tried on shoes, so I can understand ASDAs simple rule.

Disappointing as it may be.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 31/08/2020 10:06

@ChangeThePassword it ends with common sense.

Clothes - no

Shoes - yes

Needn't make it any more complicated than that.

OP posts:
BillywilliamV · 31/08/2020 10:06

Our local shop lets you try them on and then steams them.
I nearly pointed out that steaming them on the inside might make more sense.. but dont believe it actually does a great deal anyway.

middleager · 31/08/2020 10:07

No issues in Sports Direct trying numerous school shoes on.
Avoiding TK Maxx as the high vis bouncers are on a power trip.

Pamelaaaaa · 31/08/2020 10:09

I tried daps on my daughter in asda the other week. No staff around and no idea it was a rule. Good job I did though as all of her shoes are now a 13 yet their 13 daps were huge and she needed a 12.

It's one way systems and entrance/ exit doors right next to each other that staff want to enforce despite no other person in sight that get me. They aren't using any common sense in understanding the purpose of them.

ChangeThePassword · 31/08/2020 10:10

Oh op, you are naive if you think that other shoppers will see it that way.

To other people, trying on jackets will be common sense. And they won't see the difference between that and a jacket.

And what if people want to try on toe Post sandals? Socks isn't really going to work with that, so do they have one rule for one type of shoe, and another for others?

Much easier to keep it simple.

GreyGardens88 · 31/08/2020 10:10

It's one way systems for me. I live nearby a large shopping centre and I sometimes take a route past it when walking home. They not only have a one way system inside the centre but also outside as well Hmm forcing me to go inside the shopping centre and walk through crowds indoors for 10 minutes to get to the other side. Increasing my risk

It's all so barmy

millymollymoomoo · 31/08/2020 10:14

Most if not all the ‘rules’ are pointless and make no difference whatsoever. People just want to see ‘ something’ in place.
Ridiculous really
People have lost all sense of rationale

Hollyhead · 31/08/2020 10:19

I am sick to death of hygiene theatre when the most important thing is social distancing and staying the fuck home if you’re ill. I feel we’re wrangling ourselves into more economic hardship for no reason.

Porcupineinwaiting · 31/08/2020 10:20

Coronavirus is overwhelmingly spread through respiration. The vast majority of people who contract it breath the virus in, they dont catch it through trying on shoes then putting their feet in their mouths.

lookatallthosechickens · 31/08/2020 10:23

This is all making me feel like a bit of a conspiracy theorist but I feel like it's REALLY about money. If I try something on in a shop, if it's not perfect, I leave it in the shop. If I buy it and take it home, if it's not perfect, I might just make do because I don't want the hassle of returning it. I bet someone has done the math - pre-corona, for example the shop might have had 5,000 garments go through the changing rooms, but only sold 1,000. On the same day, online, they may have sold 5,000 garments, but only 1,000 were returned - so there were 3,000 garments that turned into a sale which would have been left behind in the shop.

I have no actual evidence for any of this but I feel like this is at least part of the reason that the stores aren't going to rush to re-open changing rooms.
