To relocate

It had always been in the plans to relocate nearer the coast next year, but we had planned to go late next year.
However we have just been given 6 months notice on our private rent, so looks like it may happen quicker than expected...!.

We have a 2.5 year old and are due a baby early January, hence why we had planned to go a bit later on when baby was nearer 8 months, not 8 weeks!

Neither myself or my partner are happy where we currently live, and we always said we wanted to bring kids up somewhere more in the country side /nearer the beach.

We would be 1.5 hours from family, so doable in a day and back if we wanted.
Aibu with my plans?
I feel like my family don't approve, I get the feeling they think I'm silly to move away with young children and have no support nearby.
We feel like it's now or never.

Had anyone been in a similar position, any success stories or relocating with young children?

The timing with the baby isn't ideal but I know people who have done this and survived. I also know many families who don't live near their parents and manage so I wouldn't let either of those things stop you.

You should do what you want, not what your family want. They probably just want to be near the baby when it’s born.
I had no support when my kids were born, I just got on with it as it was my normal.

Definitely do it. I had v little support when DC were born. I think moving with a young baby is fine. You can settle into mother and baby groups in the new area and establish a friendship circle that way much quicker !

Mintjulia · 31/08/2020 07:36

Definitely do it. Ok, you'd planned to do it later but see this as an opportunity. It's your life, not theirs.

Who will provide childcare as your kids grow? Can you afford childcare and work in your new location? What happens in emergencies?

These are all questions I'd be asking myself.

Probably easier to move with a babe in arms than a crawler, to be honest!

If this is what you both want, it's not really up to your family. Do it!

Thank you for the positive replies.
I think we do just have to seize the day and do it.
At least I will be off on mat leave and not have to juggle Childcare straight off.
DS will be due his 30 hours free childcare in September next year, then when I go back to work, we will only have one lot of childcare to pay for.
Plus i can always do night shifts Friday Saturday when OH is home For childcare.

I say go for it

FippertyGibbett · 31/08/2020 10:56

It sounds like you need to get there and get his name down for nursery then.
How exciting, what an adventure !
Good luck 🏝

I’ve moved twice when pregnant. At 5 months with DD and 6 months with DS.

I would just say factor in the impact it could possibly have on your mental health. Having family nearby and having a support network of friends/neighbours can be really important. Joining mum groups while pregnant could be really beneficial.

The first time I moved to the other side of the Atlantic and had no one and the second time I’ve moved during the covid pandemic so haven’t been able to make any connections - so I’m looking at it from an extreme perspective.

Aahh99 · 31/08/2020 15:38

@sunshineroses, yes I had thought about this.

I'm not an overly social person to begin with tbh, I am happy in my own little bubble with OH and DS, and soon to be DD.
At just an hour and half Drive, I can always come back and stay at mums for a night / few days with both kids if needed for support.
Will look into a few baby groups too when we get there too.

Defo need to get the ball rolling and settle on where exactly we will want to move, and get DS name down for nursery.

Just when I think about the whole move as a big picture, it panics me a bit!

I think it's a great idea OP, what better way to fit in to a new community than to have a baby (or a puppy - that would be my preference, but each to their own! 🤣).
