I'm abusing aibu probably but I want a clear poll.
Does/did your neurotypical toddler(12-18months) constantly -
-Hand flap
-Hum constantly instead of babbling, no words
-Stare into space/day dream

YABU - No my toddler didn't do any of these things to a noticable extent
YANBU- Yes my toddler regularly did one or more of these things

Ftm, no baby group mums to consult anymore due to covid. Thank you.

My son used to stare into space and flail his arms around, we used to call it ‘going fishing’ the information I got was that it was a gross motor tic that is quite common and most grow out of it, no humming but a high pitched brrrrr noise, I think they make a noise they like and keep doing it, but he did babble alongside it. He is now seven and doesn’t do any of these things.

Mine did not.

But I have met several other toddlers who handflap, or who day dream a lot, or speak later than their peers - and only one of several has been diagnosed with anything (autism). The rest, they just grew out of it, or continued as part of a broader personality trait.

Child-rearing is worrying, and I really feel for you with these concerns, especially during COVID. But I'd recommend taking to a medical professional rather than other mums, hopefully they can reassure you. If they too are concerned they can point you in the right direction to get support.

Thank you all for your input, I have contacted the health visitor but it's a bank holiday so I assume she'll be back tuesday, and I'm stuck in a worry hole tonight.
Dc has a physical condition which 20% of children with have a mental disability so it increases the worry factor.

My toddler flapped her hands loads when she was younger (now 18 months) but seems to have grown out of it in the last couple of months.

Was quite concerned about absence epilepsy at one point due to the amount of time she spent staring into space but thankfully that seems to have decreased.

Mine did not

shivbo2014 · 30/08/2020 19:34

My 14 month old flaps his arms alot usually when he wants something/is excited. He doesn't do the other two things.

Emeeno1 · 30/08/2020 19:36

Our little one flaps so much we call it take off. It is beautiful and expresses his emotional excitement so well.

CCSS15 · 30/08/2020 19:38

Mine does a stare into space which he doesnt respond to, lasts 30secs to a minute then he's back in the room - its slightly worrying but we are just monitoring it for the moment. No humming or flapping

I have 3 NT dc and 2 with ASD. None of them did any of the things in your OP and both dc with ASD were diagnosed by two and a half.
