AIBU to get rid of the bathroom scales?

Just that. I'm 41. For the best part of 2 decades I've had an obsessive and destructive relationship with the bathroom scales, my own self image being directly related to the number the dial lands at. Over lockdown I moved them because we had to take the bathroom floor up (leak, long story) and they ended up somewhere at the back of the garage due to various jugglings of furniture etc due to home working.
I am so much happier without them! I look at my body in a new way, my clothes tell me if I've put on weight and my focus has shifted to being fit and strong rather than a particular weight. I think I've probably answered my own question, but should I get rid forever or am I just on a slippery slope to gradual weight gain without the scales to keep me in check?
YABU - keep the scales
YANBU -get rid!

Can't vote as on the app but I ditched the fuckers a couple of years ago and honestly it's so liberating. I've not gained weight (lost a bit in fact) and now I go by my clothes and how I feel in myself.

It's incredibly refreshing and I feel much healthier in body and mind for it.

Get rid, mine have not worked for ages.

MysweetAudrina · 30/08/2020 18:32

I bought one recently weighed myself downstairs and was 12.5st. 2 days later I weighed myself upstairs I was 13.5st. Threw it in the bin there and then. I know when my clothes are too tight and I knew when I am filling my face full of junk.

DaisyDreaming · 30/08/2020 18:34

Get rid of them and don’t look back!

pinkbalconyrailing · 30/08/2020 18:39

I think for most people it is good to have scales and to regularly check weight.
but I know it can be a thorny issue for people with eating disorders.

Dita73 · 30/08/2020 18:43

If you’re comfortable getting rid of them then I say go for it. I’m one of those weight obsessed psychopaths who has three sets. It’s ridiculous

JorisBonson · 30/08/2020 18:45

Never owned them. Wasn't allowed them in the house growing up and I've kept that in my own home.

I tend to go by what my clothes feel like.

CoronaIsShit · 30/08/2020 18:46

YANBU. I need to do the same. Since the gym reopened and I’m working my bollocks off 6 days a week, I’ve put on half a stone apparently. I know it’s to do with muscles tearing and water retention but it’s making me crazy even though I can now fit into a size 14 despite weighing almost 14 stone Hmm.

I think a tape measure is a better option.

GrannyRoberts · 30/08/2020 18:50

Yes! A tape measure would probably prevent the potential for self delusion. I feel so free without the malevolent fuckers.

Ours had broken at the start of lockdown- and so I didn't weigh myself throughout, until shops had been open for a bit and I bought new ones.
I had actually lost weight- and I think it's partly down to not checking all the time.
Your clothes will tell you all you need to know!

Cooroo · 30/08/2020 18:54

I'm obsessed with data so I love getting the feedback every day. But if it works better for you without, ditch them!

24hoursfromtulsa · 30/08/2020 19:35

MIL has bathroom scales in her bathroom. When we stay with them I feel compelled to stand on them each time I go in the bathroom.

That's why I won't have any in my house.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 30/08/2020 19:57

What about other members of the family? I actually think it’s good practice to regularly get weighed. No every day but at least once a month.

GrannyRoberts · 30/08/2020 20:52

I think my fear is that the weight would creep on gradually and I won't notice without the scales. But balancing that against how much better I feel without the pressure of those numbers I think it's a risk worth taking...nobody else really weighs themselves in my house. I have DS6 and DD8 and I don't think I want them to get into all that. My DH is naturally slim and never puts on weight. He weighs himself once a year or so out of curiousity but it never changes. I would add that none of us are.overweight and in my case the scales have probably been encouraging me to strive for an unrealistically low weight. I think it's time to free myself from the numbers.and focus on my fitness and health.

I've recently lost two stone by joining a gym. I'm still obsessed with what the numbers say on the scales unfortunately even though I'm an extremely healthy weight. I weigh myself every morning. I know it's a habit I need to break however

Yellredder · 30/08/2020 21:19

We haven't had any for years. My OH is from a family riddled with EDs. Last time we had them, he was becoming obsessive with going on them and I didn't want our child to start copying him. So they went.

speakout · 30/08/2020 21:24

I have no idea how much I weigh.
It must be 15 years since I last weighed myself.
I do know that size 10 jeans still fit me comfortaby- all I need to know.
