AIBU in seeing how this honours the NHS at all?

It just went over my area and it was so underwhelming. It was so high you couldn’t see any of the writing and it was over in 2 seconds. Seeing a normal EasyJet flight is more spectacular tbh.

Surely this is just a waste of fuel. Do people really think this is great, especially those working in the NHS? Or AIBU?

It’s a Spitfire. Some people love them.

TheFairyCaravan · 30/08/2020 14:59

Stop being a misery guts. Loads of people love the Spitfire.

Anyhow, thanks OP, I've just had a Google and seen that you can nominate people to have their names put on the side of it so I've nominated DS2. He bloody loves them and has worked his bollocks off in A&E as a nurse. So thanks for the thread.

recklessruby · 30/08/2020 15:12

Am jealous. We love the spitfires.

latticechaos · 30/08/2020 15:16

I can't get bothered one way or another, you'll never persuade some bores people to stop thinking a spitfire is the height of excitement.

SomewhereEast · 30/08/2020 15:18

As a foreigner I'm just amazed no one thought to fuse the country's two state religions (the NHS & WWII) before now Grin. Yes its sentimental & naff & hilariously odd if you're not a Brit - my Irish family think its comical - but I'm happy about anything which sparks a bit of joy rignt now.

allaglow · 30/08/2020 15:20

The sound of the engine makes me feel all emotional.
Not due to wartime memories ( I'm 56), but there's something about that noise to reach the soul.

Is it the thought of the bombs perhaps?

I can never really get cheered up by machinery of war.

latticechaos · 30/08/2020 15:24

Oh, sorry, they were fighters not bombers!

allaglow · 30/08/2020 15:24

latticechaos, not cheered up, I meant emotional in a sad and tearful way.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 30/08/2020 15:29

For some people they symbolise they British spirit in the face of disaster, for others they don’t. It’s your choice whether to look up at the sky or down on the ground.

MrsZola · 30/08/2020 15:29

I love a Spitfire! They fly over all day everyday where I live - small local airfield does trips. Bloody expensive. You can have a cup of tea at the cafe by the runway and watch them take off and land.

Well the number one in the Amazon music chart is Vera Lynn singing Land of Hope and Glory.

Which ties in with those same 2 religions

This was my first thought! A bit of war wanking and the NHS, just what we need to cheer us up! The Brexiteers must be delighted.

I said something very similar to this when I read about it! Very much like the term war wanking 🤣

I saw a video on FB of some people clapping and banging pans as the thing flew overhead. What a time to be alive.

Burnthurst187 · 30/08/2020 15:57

I love the Spitfire, the sound of the Merlin engine is probably my favourite sound in the world. The Spitfire helped us win the war, it's a huge part of our history and very, very special

My grandad helped repair them during WWII and my DP's Gran's brother got shot down and died flying one

I watched a spitfire fly over my local hospital in the last two weeks and it put on a little show. It flew directly over the top of my house and it was very low

I get not everybody sees what special about a Spitfire but for me they are a very important part of our past. My Dad also flew in a two seater for his 70th birthday and had full control at one point

SerenityNowwwww · 30/08/2020 16:01

Where? Today?

TimeIhadaNameChange · 30/08/2020 16:05

@MrsZola - where do you live? I'm jealous, is live to see spitfires flying every day. I have to make do with the odd Tornado now and again!

Unlikely to be “again” since they went out of service in March 2019!

Tunnocks34 · 30/08/2020 16:10

We went and it was great. I took my sons, my local hospital had people lining the streets and cheering. We saw the writing fine.

Tunnocks34 · 30/08/2020 16:11

I live in Manchester btw for anyone wondering where this happened

Apolloanddaphne · 30/08/2020 16:12

One flew past us on the east coast of Scotland a few minutes ago. I didn't see it but I heard it and looked on Flightradar 24 and there it was. I hope it comes back round so I can see it.

ChaChaCha2012 · 30/08/2020 16:13

It sounds like you weren't at one of the planned display points, if it was all over within two seconds.

I was fortunate to see the two Lancasters flying down Derwent Dam in 2014. Not particularly into military history but that sight will stay with me forever.

ChaChaCha2012 · 30/08/2020 16:18

It's the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford who have organised the flypasts, they're fundraising for NHS charities.

Longdistance · 30/08/2020 16:19

The spitfire will only be allowed at a certain altitude. My local hospital has electric pilons close by and a busy airport. It can only fly at a certain altitude.
YABU and a misery guts ✈️

ChilledTomotoes · 30/08/2020 16:19

@SerenityNowwwww it has been in various areas and today it was our turn:

www.military-airshows.co.uk/press20/nhs-spitfire-flypast-july2020.htm

Sorry I don’t know how to make it clicky.

Interesting that no-one from the NHS has said it made them feel honoured yet.

Perhaps if it had been lower and we could actually see it properly it would have meant something. All we saw is this for 2 secs.
