Left the LPG gas on...

I realised earlier today I left one of the LPG gas things on my stove on (gas on, but unlit) for about 40 hours.

I have an open plan house and the kitchen is on the top floor. I started to notice a faint funny smell about 24 hours in, and aired the house, Which resolved it temporarily, but obviously the gas was still on So it came back.

Today I started going through the house in earnest, trying to find the smell and vacuuming everything, and I worked it out.

I’ve since been googling and I’ve been using electronics and lights etc all the time (everything I shouldn’t have been doing!) I’ve got everything off now and all the doors and windows open.

My questions are - for how long should I air the house? And does the gas sink? I would feel better if this was true, as, my lowest floor just has the garage and front door.

TIA. Really worried here.

Yes it will sink. I would get advice from fore brigade. www.flogas.co.uk/lpg-properties-hazards

Obviously that should say fire brigade.

Or you can ring the gas emergency helpline for whichever gas it is you have. Either 03457 444 999 for Calor gas or 03457 200 100 for flogas.

Just keep all windows open as wide as you can until you've spoken to the fire brigade.

LPG is heavy - heavier than air, so it sinks (like water would!). You need to leave doors open as well as windows (windows to create movement, ground level openings to let the gas “escape”.

Upstairs should clear quickly (really, if you can still smell it upstairs then you need to double check the appliance is off. I’d guess you shouldn’t be switching off the power at the mains as that would cause a spark.

If you have a cellar, that's where it will be.

Which resolved it temporarily, but obviously the gas was still on So it came back.

Why on earth didn't you turn it off?

Because she didn't realise was the source of the smell was Confused

Ah, I assumed that anybody that cooked with LPG would know what it smells like. It's a very distinctive smell.

OP perhaps consider swapping your stove for one with flame failure devices. They will cut the gas off automatically.

How did you get on OP?
