Starting new job need confidence boosters

Really need some confidence boosters or tricks please. I’m worried I’m going to make a bad impression again in this job due to my very low esteem and social awkwardness.

I also suffer from “imposter syndrome” I had no idea this is what it was called but I’ve felt it my entire life! Basically I feel nervous talking to senior management as I feel I’m going to get caught out that they may think I’m not smart enough, clever enough or deserving of the job. Please help, I’m in absolute knots at the moment. I actually considered yesterday not to turn up and make an excuse and have to give my notice in even before starting!

Firstly congratulations on the new job!!

I assume you applied and went to interview along witb possibly hundreds of other applicants and they picked you!!Wine so thinking of that should be a booster!

You obviously have the skills and experience or you wouldn't have been given the job

Every time I start a new job I see it as an opportunity to meet new people and learn new things. Noone is perfect! And we all need to adapt and learn and no one will expect you to go in and be perfect immediately.

Take your time and set yourself some short medium and long term objectives to work towards this which will give you good focus

Have you tried any cbt or simmilar for the soca anxiety? Maybe a career coach? What type of field is the new job?

Congratulations. You have done the hard work and have the skills to get you to where you are. You can do this x longer term consider some CBT. In the meantime it is cringey at first but giving your self a 'you 've got this' or a thumbs up in a mirror can be an instant boost in the morning (or if you pop to the loo).

Well done on your new job!! Is there a song you can listen to that gives you a confidence? Ain't no mountain high enough - that kind of a song? Listen to the words to give you a little boost. Just smile lots and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. I started a new job last year and put myself out of my comfort zone but now am part of the family!

Thank you all! The thing is not many people applied for the job I was one of a few I think. I was only one at interview. I just hate standing up and introducing myself like I will have to on day 1. I got bullied a lot in my last place due to my low self esteem and don’t want same to happen here. I’m hoping due to Covid we won’t be expected to stand up and introduce ourselves, but I think it might still happen. I am shaking thinking of day 1. Just really don’t want to go!

Congratulations on your new job! Even if there wasn’t lots of Competition for this Role they didn’t have to give it to you and could have easily reposted the advert - so you must have got it because you deserved it!

I find keeping a diary a great way to stay focused and appreciate my strengths while looking at my weaknesses constructively. List all the positive things about yourself and why you were given the job. Read this daily and add to it whenever you can. I also keep a record of everything I am grateful for such as house, job, family etc. And it makes me realise that (despite my inner voice) I am successful in my own way.

Good luck on your first day!

I used to suffer terribly from imposter syndrome, despite reading all these sort of things about everyone feeling the same, etc. For me, the revelation was finding myself in a job i really loved and was really good at... and being told i was good at it.

A lot of it comes from good management. Noone in your team should think they are doing a poor job, or not know how to improve things. Everyone should know what they are doing well.

I dont know what sort of job would make a new starter stand up and introduce themselves to everyone on the first day - that sounds excruciating. Im sure with COVID and everything, you wont be expected to do that. What attracted you to the job in the first place? Think about two or three skills you bring to the job, and two that you want to learn. What sort of job is it? I like the idea of writing yourself a short- , medium-, and long-term plan.

Good luck, you will be fine!
