To ask about clots on the lung?

Can anyone help?
My dad had an operation 2 weeks ago and was readmitted to hospital last night with breathlessness.
They say he has a few small clots on his lung.
They gave given him a high dose anticoagulant injection and there is talk of him being allowed home later with tablets.

From my reading into the wee hours they usually do injections for 5 days do how can discharging him with tablets be okay????

And just more generally does anyone have any reassurance about this? Feels very scary.

Thank you.

Its very scary, it’s can cause pulmonary embolism. Mum had one about 10 years ago, she was in hospital for a week on oxygen and has been on blood thinners ever since.

The tablets will be to thin the blood and prevent clotting, he may be on them for life, but it will control it.

He needs to be very honest about alcohol consumption as it can take a while to get the dosage absolutely right and alcohol effects it. He’ll have to go in regularly for finger prick blood tests especially to start with. So yes scary, but manageable. Good luck and try not to overthink it all 💐

My mum had clots in her lungs a few years ago after cancer treatment. From what I remember, she was in hospital for a few days and the allowed home and injected herself every day for a while. She's now completely recovered with no long term health conditions or medication. Good luck and I hope your dad is ok.

The tablets will a blood thinner be to prevent further clots.
You don't always have to inject just the tablets should do the job. It is scary but I'm sure he'll be fine.

@CalicoTheCat how long after treatment? My DM had chemo and radiotherapy for lung cancer in feb, and has been very breathless for a couple of weeks. She’s spoken to her consultant who said it’s common after radiotherapy because of the damage it causes to the lungs but now I’m wondering if it could be blood clots.

CalicoTheCat · 30/08/2020 07:49

It was actually during her treatment. She was hospitalised for almost a month because of the side effects of chemo, and the clots appeared a few weeks after that, so in my mum's case, it may have something to do with being sedentary for so long. Her cancer was bowel cancer - so the clots weren't directly connected.

@Calicothecat
Exact same as my mum. They actually showed me how to Inject, so I did that daily for her.

When I had blood clots in my lungs I had the injections of clexane for five days, I’m unsure why your dad didn’t tbh because it generally is the way they treat it before they put you on tablets. The injections are a better way apparently. If your dad maybe just had the one clot or it isn’t that big maybe that’s why?
I had the five days of injections then 6 months of 5mg apixaban twice daily. After 6 months they decided I needed to take them for life as a precaution and dropped the dosage to 2.5mg twice daily.
I hope your dad is okay! Having a pulmonary embolism really petrified me and those bloody injections stung so much!

Thanks everyone.
He's actually been sent home with injections to do himself so that's good.

My mum has clots in her lung after her treatment. After the fact I was told by the doctor that chemo causes blood to thicken and certain cancers raise the risk of clots as well.. PE is really dangerous so if you are worried at all please get her a second opinion with a doctor
