To insist that my friend doesn't go back to work on Tuesday without a negative covid test result?

Teacher friend at a large inner city secondary school, says she's woken up feeling ill - sore throat, no sense of taste, temperature, shivers, etc. She's back to work on Tuesday. I've told her to get a covid test sent to her home and wait for the results before going back to work.

She said it's unlikely she'll get the test, send it back and get the results by Tuesday, as it's BH, and so will

'have to go in anyway , as it could just be a cold and I always go to work when I have a cold'

She also thinks she may be better by Tuesday.
Aibu in saying she really needs to get a test. Her school's huge and she'll come into contact with loads of staff on the Tuesday and then with the 90 children in her bubble on the Wednesday, not to mention all those commuters on her train and tube journey to and from the school.

What is she thinking of? Surely she'll get sick pay if she's off! She's going to put everyone at risk for nothing?!

parietal · 29/08/2020 22:39

She should definitely get a test. As a teacher she will be talking all day & that is one of the best ways to spread Covid through a whole school.

MarshaBradyo · 29/08/2020 22:40

How frustrating. Yes she needs to test.

hopeishere · 29/08/2020 22:41

That is just utterly bonkers.

MrsHamlet · 29/08/2020 22:42

She needs to get a test. Anything else is totally irresponsible.

macdhui · 29/08/2020 22:42

If you are symptomatic and have a Covid fest you are required to isolate until you have a negative result.
She can’t be thinking straight considering going to work!

Maxabella2 · 29/08/2020 22:43

When you're tested, you get the results within 48hrs-I had mine back in 21 hrs!

ilovesooty · 29/08/2020 22:43

If she has a temperature and no sense of taste of course she needs to get a test. Doing otherwise is totally irresponsible.

RingPiece · 29/08/2020 22:44

She feels bad as she's just had six weeks off. I do know where she's coming from, I used to teach and hated being off sick as I felt I should only be ill during half terms and holidays!...but things are different now.

I'm wanting to convince her by sending her the link to this thread if it pans out the way I want it to!

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 29/08/2020 22:44

Sorry @MrsHamlet - cross post.

MarshaBradyo · 29/08/2020 22:45

She could spread it to her colleagues then they pass it on. Why would she want to risk that in a school? Crazy

RingPiece · 29/08/2020 22:45

So far, so good. Thank you. I'll show her soon.

TW2013 · 29/08/2020 22:45

Can she go to a drive in test site to speed it up. No one is going to thank her for shutting the bubble in the first week and it won't help confidence in the system. Among 90 children some of them will be vulnerable or were shielding or have family members. Does she have no sense of duty to protect them? Hope she feels better soon.

ilovesooty · 29/08/2020 22:45

I used to teach too. These are different times.

Ullupullu · 29/08/2020 22:46

You don't need to send her this thread, you need to send a link to the official gov dot uk website guidance. With those symptoms she should be self isolating.

RingPiece · 29/08/2020 22:47

So I'm interested in the 11% who have voted YABU. What should she do?

OP posts:
MrsHamlet · 29/08/2020 22:47

I still teach and she's being silly. If she has it, she could pass it on in week one of the new term. The fact that she's just had her summer holiday is neither here nor there.
Our RA specifically requires staff with any symptoms to stay off and get tested.

Bridecilla · 29/08/2020 22:47

My dad took my step mum for a test on Wednesday because she had symptoms. They drove straight from the test car park to a carvery for lunch. I'm so angry and disappointed with them. They're 72 and 73, their irresponsibility throughout this epidemic has changed my views of them horribly

CodenameVillanelle · 29/08/2020 22:47

We are in a fucking pandemic. She could infect a whole class and several teachers. What is she thinking of??

daisybrown37 · 29/08/2020 22:47

I work in HR in a school, please tell her not to go in until she is 1) better and 2) has a negative test result. For her sake but also her colleagues.

Can she get to a drive through test centre, might be quicker than the post?

Neolara · 29/08/2020 22:47

She would be behaving like a complete arsehole to go to work on Tuesday without a test. She could potentially put hundreds of people at risk.

Bridecilla · 29/08/2020 22:47

*pandemic

RingPiece · 29/08/2020 22:48

Ullupullu I've send her that already.

@Maxabella2

53 hours since I returned my test, and according to Royal Mail 40 hours since they received it. I'm still waiting.

You can't do a home test on Sundays or bank holidays, she'll have to go to a drive in.

chillied · 29/08/2020 22:49

I've just read the letter from my Doc's school saying they want us to be cautious and to keep DC off until tested if we suspect symptoms.

Her Head will NOT thank her if her school is one of the first with an outbreak of cases thanks to her.

It sounds really like Covid. It should be a no-brainer for her. Much simpler for the school to arrange cover than to have a teacher with covid first day back!
