To be a bit shocked to come home to a campsite on our road?

It seems our local farmer runs a camping business.
We only know because we came home from holiday today to find the field right by our house occupied by various camper vans and tents.

Lots of shouting and drinking going on and porta loos in the corner of the field so it's obviously been planned.

I think he normally uses other fields which are off the road away from houses so It was a bit of a shock. AIBU to think a polite note through local residents doors might have been a nice touch?

The field they are camping on was advertised for sale recently as grazing land. Does this also mean they are allowed to run a campsite?

Sorry, that should say he is likely to need planning permission. You should be able to do a search on the council website to see if he has applied either now or in the past.

SantaClaritaDiet · 29/08/2020 19:23

You are absolutely correct, it IS rude and inconsiderate not to warn you.

Now, when you see that the UK is absolutely packed this year, it's hardly surprising any "campsite" owner is willing to extend their availability. All the local FB groups are full of desperate calls for campsite availability, everyone and his brother seems to have bought a tent and is camping!

I'd be tempted to go for the hot chocolate/pastries business to join the in Grin

FOKKYFC · 29/08/2020 19:27

I wouldn't be thrilled about shouting and drinking in a field opposite me, actually. Saturday night or no.

MsTSwift · 29/08/2020 19:38

I wouldn’t be hsppy about that at all. Who wants a load of pissed up campers next to them

famousforwrongreason · 29/08/2020 19:46

@Clymene

Shouting and drinking at 7pm on a Saturday evening! Good god, what is the world coming to?! Hmm
Young men shouting about putting 'things' in bongs. The horror. Although, if they're using the bongs for their actual purpose those crazy cats will be asleep by ten.
Clymene · 29/08/2020 19:46

They are camping FGS, not having an orgy. I think you need to chill out a bit.

nosswith · 29/08/2020 19:49

Rude not to warn you, but from reading the comments, there is not a lot you can do unless they are noisy in the middle of the night.

Police have too much to do as it is, especially with cuts in numbers (in London courtesy of Mr Johnson when Mayor), so I doubt they will be quick to act.

SantaClaritaDiet · 29/08/2020 19:51

No normal human would appreciate anyone shouting at any time of the day. Only on MN would some posters claim it's perfectly normal and people enjoy it Hmm

sycamorecottage · 29/08/2020 19:51

My advice?

Sit back and let the local FB group go wild over it. Say nothing, and let others do the work for you.

And I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but here it is downright cold with a breeze & soaking drizzle, so console yourself with the fact that camping in this sort of weather is a bit shit. Grin

I suspect there's a bit of artistic licence from the OP. People don't tend to shout for long periods, unless they have to so they can be heard. Unless the OP is playing her music at rave volume, I'm sure the campers are talking at normal volume one

Confused

If you honestly believe that and have never experience the level of rudeness and inconsideration people can reach , you are a very lucky person living in a very privileged area!

mathanxiety · 29/08/2020 19:58

I doubt his license extends to any field on his land.

There would be considerations to take into account like -
Road access for motor vehicles onto and off the land - they would need to be able to do this safely and not onto a stretch of road where there is limited visibility;
Access to vehicles hauling away rubbish and portaloos;
Access for emergency vehicles if required;
Nuisance to nearby residents.

You haven't experienced life next door to my mum's former neighbours. The cans of lager would pop open about noon most weekends all summer out in their garden unless it was tipping down, and then it was off to the races. The drunker they got the louder they got.

Hmmph · 29/08/2020 20:04

If you report it, you have to declare it if you ever sell. And I would suspect that a potential campsite next to your house would put buyers off...

SantaClaritaDiet · 29/08/2020 20:10

I'm a camper

and you have never experienced rude campers?! You ARE lucky!

rosesinmygarden · 29/08/2020 20:13

@Clymene what makes you think I'm lying??? That's a bit nasty.

I'm actually quite chilled but also a bit pee'd off the farmer didn't show us the courtesy of forewarning us. Bearing in mind they regularly post requests on the local FB page themselves asking for warning of any loud parties or fireworks so they can move their animals. Why ask for this courtesy if you're not willing to return it?

According to the neighbours the drinking and shouting went on past midnight last night. At least it's cool enough to not have all the windows open.

It’s flipping freezing tonight they are mental. We have abandoned our bbq and glad to snuggle in the house. Cannot think of worse “Holiday” than cold camping. I had to camp my entire life until I was old enough to refuse to but at least my parents only camped in warm climates and it was Eurocamp. Anything else is just masochism.

rosesinmygarden · 29/08/2020 20:15

I'm not going to report it by the way. Unless some thing illegal happens.

Around 25 families seem to disagree with you Grin I can smell campfires from here and I really fancy a s'more now!

Madness. Worse is the camping worthies who seem to think there is some sort of moral virtue to be had in sleeping in a field and annoying locals like the poor op.

QueenofLouisiana · 29/08/2020 20:22

There has been a relaxation of some rules this year, I believe, farmers are being encouraged to create short term camping sites. This is due to the number of people who want to camp in the U.K. at the moment. If it’s causing a problem, report it do that it is less likely to happen again next year.?

VividImagination · 29/08/2020 20:31

Use it to your advantage sell bacon rolls, coffee and morning showers. I’d have paid almost anything for a decent shower on many camping trips.

NettleTea · 29/08/2020 20:49

permitted development rights
if he has over 5 hectares (11 acres) he can do whatever he wants on the land for 28 days without any licence. If its motorsports or clay shooting then its 14 days.

We do a pop up campsite at our farm in August generally, but the rules about cleaning meant that we ought to be doing it every hour for shared facilities and it was too much for the number of tents /campers we allow (about 12 in a 10 acre field)

This year they have doubled the amount of time, so officially he could be open into October but unlikely with the weather

Would have been nice for him to have let you know. The only issue Id think would be the toilets and whether he is managing them according to guidelines. But then Im guessing as with everything in the UK, its only guidance, and if people are happy to not care, there is nothing anyone can do.

Ellmau · 29/08/2020 21:00

Maybe he’s expanded to this field to allow for greater distancing between tents / caravans?

You could report the drug taking youths to the police.
