AIBU to continue with the application ?

Long time lurker, I appreciate this isn't necessarily an AIBU but I know that this is the forum to receive the most varied and honest replies 😁

I recently applied for what is absolutely my dream job. I am qualified , however the essential criteria said that you had to be able to drive. I can't , and said that in the application.

However, I have today received an email saying I have progressed to the next stage which involves a complicated online process which will take a lot of time and work for me and the person recruiting .

It appears that my lack of driving has slipped through the net. AIBU to continue ?

How relevant is being able to drive to the job? Is it based at multiple sites or would you be office based?

Barrowmanfan22 · 29/08/2020 16:12

A bit of both , I believe.

You have disclosed, that's all you are required to do.

The job might have changed with Covid-19.

Book some lessons though. Good luck.

If the job involves say visiting clients at home in a limited area would you be willing to get a moped? If so state that in the application.
How would you propose to get around the need to drive or do you think it is not neccessary for this job?

Hard to answer that without outing myself - I have to relocate in the first place so I'm still investigating how far apart I'd be doing and if taxiing etc would be an option. As a PP said , perhaps the travelling will change due to covid.

I think I'd just check with them. You don't want to waste your time or theirs.

Pipandmum · 29/08/2020 16:17

I would ring them and ask.

D4rwin · 29/08/2020 16:17

I think if you have a plan for getting around to do the work ready then ywnbu to continue. What do you intend to do?

Barrowmanfan22 · 29/08/2020 16:19

@Pipandmum

I would ring them and ask.
The closing date for the work is before they will be able to answer phones /my email.

I have emailed to confirm but also submitted the work and I suppose I can only wait and see.

Keep applying! Sometimes employers don’t actually know what they require until the person is employed.

My DH company always asks for a full driving license even though in 6 years - he’s never needed to travel!

I don’t drive and just applied for a role that asks for a license and the role is 100% office based. So I disclosed and they simply said “it’s not an issue for us”. I hope I get the job

Also my previous role said I needed a license and I actually didn’t. 2 years and it didn’t once hold me back Smile

Go through the process and see if you get the job. If you do, ask whether driving is essential. The chances of both of those happening aren't high.

If necessary take a week off and do an intensive course.

Trews2019 · 29/08/2020 16:57

Do you plan to learn to drive? Can you do an intense course to get your licence quickly?

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 29/08/2020 17:15

Crack on with the recruitment process, and in the meantime get that theory test booked, do a crash course. You’ve been honest so this isn’t your mistake (if it is a mistake) but in meantime if you can address this gap then do asap!

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/08/2020 18:32

I once got a job that needed you to drive when I didn't drive. They just asked me to start lessons ASAP.

My secretary gave me lifts or I got the bus for a while. I wasn't really grand enough for a secretary.

Francienolan · 29/08/2020 19:42

At my old job I remember a role came up where it said you needed to drive, but an internal candidate checked with the line manager who said the right applicant doesn't need to. You never know!

ODFOx · 29/08/2020 19:47

Do whatever necessary to progress the application. This is your dream job! Meanwhile sign up for an intensive course. Being able to drive is never going to hold you back, even if you rarely use the skill.

tablemable · 29/08/2020 20:16

Good luck with the application, think you fit the right thing in submitting the work but checking to clarify. Hopefully they've seen it and are ok with it. Just to caution that if your plan was to learn quickly as some have advised here, covid is likely to make that really tricky. There's a backlog of people trying to get lessons with instructors in many areas and an even bigger backlog for tests. I was in the middle of learning and had to stop as can't afford to pay for driving lessons indefinitely with no certainly of ever getting a test

Barrowmanfan22 · 30/08/2020 10:07

Thank you folks.
Enjoying the positive vibes on AIBU Grin
