To find the Crown really dull?

Starting watching this series after hearing rave reviews from so many people. I’ve persevered to the beginning of series 2 thinking it would pick up, but it hasn’t.

I really wanted to enjoy it but it’s so dull & twee. Am I alone in thinking this? What am I missing that everyone else loves?

I stopped watching it as it's not historically accurate. The scene where Queen Mary is told of George VI's death did it for me. As her last in waiting wrote in her diary how it happened. I'm such a pendant!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 29/08/2020 18:26

i loved the first two but I haven;'t been feeling it since OC and HBC took over

I will probably give it another go once the winter sets in, and with series4 looming.

amusedbush · 29/08/2020 18:27

I loved the first two series but I’ve picked up and put down the third several times. I usually love Olivia Colman but I can’t get on with her as the queen.

VestaTilley · 29/08/2020 19:21

I LOVED series 1 and 2- the politics, history, government angles.

I actually thought series 3 was dire; Churchill’s death galloped through, funeral not portrayed and (gonna say it) Olivia Colman utterly unconvincing as the Queen. Will keep watching, but it’s not the show it was.

I love it. I can’t wait for the next series. I nearly wet myself when I saw the new trailer with Diana and Maggie Thatcher! Yes I know I’m sad.

Cocomarine · 29/08/2020 19:27

I wasn’t interested, then heard about the Aberfan episode and really wanted to watch that - so I started at the beginning. Have watched 1 & 2 (so CF).

It’s FAR too long for me, would prefer much more editing. I thought Princess Margaret was marvellously acted. I really enjoyed the political elements - like Suez.

I feel like I’m wading through treacle, but there was enough to make me do so. Haven’t even finished first episode of season 3! I have not hate for OC as an actress, and I expected a period of, “that’s not my queen, her face is too NotCF”... but - the personality was completely changed! Put me right off.

mrsBtheparker · 29/08/2020 21:38

oh Aberfan 😭 I have never cried so hard at an episode of anything

The Crown seemed to want to do an assassination job on HM with this episode, yet in not going down to Wales immediately HM was allowing people to do their awful job without distractions inevitably surrounding a royal visit.

Olivia Colman is awful casting in this role.

As I am old enough to recall Aberfan the thing I found odd was that Princess Margaret organised a toy collection, it seemed to be the last thing they needed.

I'm such a pendant!

Pedant. If you're going to be one, be one.

Serena1977 · 29/08/2020 23:58

I've started watching it nearly finished series 3.

I loved the first 2 series, though CF and MS were brill and all the supporting cast. D of W, Lascelles, Porchy, Margaret etc

Do not like OC at all. Seems like the Queen had a total personality transplant from one to the next. I couldn't believe the way the Q spoke to prince Charles in the Welsh episode. I dont believe the personality of the first queen would do that.

Anne and Charles are good. I prefer the history/poliitic of the olden days rather than covering events that happened in my lifetime.

Titsywoo · 30/08/2020 00:13

I love The Crown. I agree the first 2 seasons were better because of Claire Foy but even though I'm not keen on OC as the Queen I loved Charles, Anne and Philip in season 3. I've enjoyed the history a lot - there was a large amount I didn't know much about so it's been interesting to watch.

SingingSands · 30/08/2020 00:34

Don't continue if you don't like it - life is too short! I feel the same with books. Give it a go, if it isn't for you then move on. Just because other people like it doesn't mean you have to!

I gave up on S3 and haven't been back.

Caelano · 30/08/2020 08:46

If you want a historically accurate biography of the Royal Family, don’t watch it. It’s not that, and doesn’t pretend to be.

As I said upthread, the real fascination for me was the relationship between the monarchy and the state. How they’re connected, tensions between the Queen and various PMs.
It highlights how very little we actually know about relationships within the royal family but the way it dramatises them is great because it makes you think ‘yes, they can’t ever say it, but they probably do feel like that!’

Some of the casting and acting has been superb - princess Margaret as a young adult, Prince Charles, princess Anne and some of the PMs spring to mind. Jason Watkins as Harold Wilson is brilliant.

There’s too much of a personality shift between Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman as Queen and personally I don’t think either is brilliant or really bad - it’s the transition that doesn’t work. Claire Foy looks a bit too beautiful and is a bit too sweet and nice at times, while Olivia Coleman is too abrupt and steely. But I think all those qualities have their place in the portrayal - it’s just too much of a shift from one to the other.

If you’re Expecting a historically accurate story, or you’re not interested in the political landscape over the last century then give up - it’s not going to be your thing

Emmelina · 30/08/2020 09:51

I enjoyed it, but there are plenty of other things I couldn’t get into that others absolutely rave about. And that’s fine. We all have our own tastes!

HappydaysArehere · 30/08/2020 09:57

Love the Crown as I am old enough to remember almost all the events. Thought the Claire Foy series were brilliant. However, Olivia Coleman was played wrong. She was far too aggressive and unfeeling.

Sootikinstew · 30/08/2020 22:49

The thing is, we have jumped quite a distance between Claire Fig and Olivia Coleman.

I think you do change over the course of what 20years.

Sootikinstew · 30/08/2020 22:49

Foy* bloody auto correct

CerealBeacon · 30/08/2020 22:58

Honestly, I think some of the hate that OC’s Queen got was down to the fact that she’d aged from Claire Foy’s pretty young thing in rather nice frocks to a middle-aged woman wearing some total horrors — the hat in which she invested Charles as P of W was terrifying...

The big acting revelation for me was Alex Jennings as the Duke of Windsor — I’d seen him often on stage, but I thought he was mesmerising, and infused with humanity someone who was fairly awful in RL. Also plaudits to Tobias Menzies, Vanessa Kirby, Pip Torrens, Jane Lapotaire and Josh O’Connor.

YABU. Loved it!

Including eye colour, in this case.
OrangeCinnamon1 · 31/08/2020 08:02

@Caelano

Keep going. I found the later series more interesting because the historical events were closer to my own lifetime. I also found the political aspect the most interesting part, the relationship between the royals and the government. I think if you watch it just as a story about the royal family it probably is a little dull. I think the insight into the government is fascinating
Agree with above.

Tobias Menzies is the absolute winner for me. I was sceptical I would be able to get past (one of) his characters from 'Outlander' who was a pretty horrific chap.
