Complete career change

twogreenbirds · 29/08/2020 11:47

Posting here for traffic really...Anyone who has had a complete career change after 10/12 years to something completely different to the first career that required new degree and/or training.
Examples like -

Nursing to teaching
Solicitor to medicine
Teaching to engineering

What were your experiences, were you happy with the change? I am making a major career move and I'm just looking for others experiences, what to expect etc Thank you.

My brother qualified as a chartered accountant with a Big 5 (as it was then), and then quit to do medicine. He has just, finally, finished his surgical training and become a consultant. He's almost 46, so quite a bit behind his peers, but he has no regrets (other than minor financial gripes - he's probably earning less now than someone just qualified as an accountant in a Big 4 firm....).

Thanks Panic mode.I'm mid 30s so yes I expect to be a tad older than some possibly but not all.

Yep - I went teacher to engineer in my 30s. I had done something related before and my degrees opened a lot of doors for me, but it was an absolute delight to get out of education and I have not regretted it for a second. I have picked up extra relevant quals on the job though. Having said that, I did go into teaching from something else in my late 20s so obviously had to retrain to do that!

@BobbinThreadbare123 fantastic! Sounds like a great move!! 👍

I’m currently a manager for a retail store and training to be an accountant.

Most on here seem to be leaving accountancy thoughGrin

Yes I’m seriously tempted to leave it myself

Finance sales to policing in mid 30s. Never regretted it although the money is no where near as good 😩

Potterpotterpotter · 29/08/2020 14:41

@LittleBearPad can I ask why? Or any pros and cons you’re willing to share please

LittleBearPad · 29/08/2020 18:33

I’ve been an accountant for 20 years (almost!) and I’m rather bored of the same old same old. It’s definitely a me not accountancy thing Smile
