Work emails on holiday

AIBU to be a bit narked that my boss wants me to check work emails when I'm on holiday next month?

I'm away for 1 week, I don't hold a high position in the company, there are other people who can deal with enquiries.

I skim read in the middle, so I'm not sure how this turned into a teacher based conversation.
But no a holiday is for relaxing and switching off from work. Checking emails every day would stress me out and spoil the break. Just because some people do that - in the same way some people like to check their inbox on a Sunday evening- doesn't mean it should be expected.

Sorry Finny, not shouting at you - just shouting

Dh's secondary is part of a large Academy chain and they have large reserves for expansion - untouchable reserves - so the individual schools can't claim this money.

The school popn has extensive social issues, it's overcrowded, no outside space, no masks, no santisers, very few toilets

Honestly the list goes on and on

Great that your school can claim it 👍🏻

Just because people may routinely check emails on holiday doesnt mean it should be expected. There's too much blurring between work and home tbh. Whatever your role you should be entitled to time away. And I say that as someone who for years and years checked emails and did work on holiday (and in the airport right up to boarding and on the airplane). I personally decided it wasnt fair on my family anymore and stopped though for my own sanity I do check emails now and them as I find it eases things when I get back - however it is my choice and make sure it is clear my availability cannot be relied on

Something I did not mention earlier. In pre-internet days, our internal audit team where I worked at the time mentioned that they were suspicious of anyone reluctant to take holidays. Possibly that they were hiding something or up to fraudulent behaviour.

I wonder if the same could be argued for those who check emails whilst on holiday?

I guess the OP might be someone with 20 days annual leave - not 3 months.

Miaow!! Anyone who deals with emails out of work hours is an idiot. Certainly I get amazed when I read of parents even having their child's teachers email, then bombarding them with emails out of school hours and actually expecting a reply within nano-seconds.

Hi, OP here, good to see the overwhelming response is that IA NOT BU!

Started the job this year, worked through the lockdown. I get 20 days holiday and it's my first holiday since I started. I asked should put my out of office on and was told 'No, we need to be available for our customers'. Boss owns the company, so obviously they are available 24/7.

Possibly because I'm staying at home and not 'away', the boss thinks this is a reasonable request Hmm

Ironically, I have a work phone but emails aren't accessible, and was told 'we don't have emails on phones, as you get interrupted at home'.

I will probably do it this time as the job is hugely convenient and given the economic situation atm I am lucky to be employed but next time I'm off I will be away somewhere remote without internet access! Wink
My work phone will be switched off, as it always is at weekends when I'm off.

I just feel pissed off because I always go over and above when I'm at work because that's the type of person I am but when I'm off, I expect to be able to switch off from work properly.

I should add that even though I'm not away, I have stuff planned for most days. Smile

Ha ha! You are joking, right?

Even these days there are some roles in our company where they must take two years off in a row per year and during those weeks all system access (including email on phones) is revoked. It is a way of identifying potential fraud or other type of dodgy behaviour
