I have had the same shoddy coat for so so long. I have watched my children playing football for years and love it. What I don't love is freezing to death standing at the side of a pitch.
I really need help to find the perfect coat as this one will have to last! It has to be extremely warm, is duck/down any good? Waterproof would be preferable. No idea where to start. I'm a size 12, been looking at Superdry, Timberland etc. Thinking of spending up to £200.
Please can you help me?!

[quote ChippyTea16]I love my north face parka. Warm and waterproof and plain black so goes with everything. Zip pockets etc. I’m not in the uk but believe most styles like this are sold everywhere.

I have this and I can confirm it is extremely warm and cosy. Mine is a few years old and looks brand new still.

SmilingAloe · 29/08/2020 14:22

For seriously warm and dry I wear my Rab down jacket under my Helly Hansen sailing jacket. I also love my long Barbour which I bought a size up in so I can wear cosy jumpers under it.

Reiss do beautiful tailored coats, I have 2 and they are both 5yrs+ but still as new. But They’re not coats for taking dog for a walk ....

I bought a gorgeous one from Seraphine last year. It was £120 but it is so warm and cosy. It is advertised as a maternity coat but it converts to a kangaroo coat and then just a usual one. I can’t wait to wear it again in the winter!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 29/08/2020 15:02

I had a Lands End one that lasted me years, and so last winter I got a new one, only this time not down. I got a Waterproof Squall Jacket, it is so warm, I only wear a long sleeve teeshirt under it most of the winter.

Oysterbabe · 29/08/2020 17:00

I'm in the market for a new winter coat too.
I've just ordered this one.

Trespass. Waterproof and really warm. I took one similar to Edinburgh in February blizzards and was warm and dry

Rab do great coats, a bit pricey but really good. Like another poster has said I try and always avoid real down but there are options.

TheWernethWife · 29/08/2020 17:44

Bought mine from M & S - got three, Two short padded jackets and one longer length one. All are lovely and warm - the jackets are ok for in the car. Wear the long one when walking the dog.

Agree with pp, get a good scarf, gloves/mittens, hat, warm boots (might need another thread on that actually!) double up on socks etc

If you can get to one of the outlet centres such as Cheshire Oaks, you can try on loads.

I have a lovely Seasalt coat and a huge Didrikson. The latter is super heavy though.

Merename · 29/08/2020 18:09

I got a seasalt one Last winter, regret it, it’s too big and feels frumpy. Also first time I wore it I passed a lady about 40yrs my senior wearing the same one and now call it my granny coat. Do others feel it is stylish or is it just the practical qualities that appeal?!

I have a padded winter coat from Superdry and although not waterproof it is SO cosy and warm, it's like wearing a thermal sleeping bag. I spray it regularly with waterproofing protector and it holds showers off ok.

BlueJava · 29/08/2020 18:46

Get a long quilt type coat - long means no draft up your back! They can be bulky but I completely love mine, it's like walking around in a duvet. I got mine form navabi.com as I'm plus size so can't help for size 12! Definitely YANBU

BlueJava · 29/08/2020 18:50

Apologies, that should be navabi.co.uk (not .com)

GameSetMatch · 29/08/2020 19:05

I would go with a Barbour coat, it will last for years and is warm and waterproof! It’s also well made unlike other makes. Mine had a warranty with it. British made too so no sweatshops involved!
