Staying with friends for weekend- what to bring gift wise?

AIBU to ask what you'd bring if friends who live in a lovely house in middle of countryside ask you to stay (next weekend) - me, DH and 2 kids, they don't yet have kids. Are very generous hosts. Will be amazing to have a change of scenery in their lovely house.

What gifts would you bring as guests? Thanks

Bring some nice food. Cheese, biscuits, continental meats, etc.

Leeds2 · 28/08/2020 13:11

Wine, and flowers.

DorisDances · 28/08/2020 13:11

When we stay with friends for the weekend we usually buy a hessian or similar nice reusable bag from say M & S or a local deli and fill it with goodies from the store - choccies, jam, drinks etc and hand that over with flowers. always goes down well as something for everyone

demelza82 · 28/08/2020 14:49

Nice bottle of wine, flowers - locally made chocolates/craft beer etc

Sparklesocks · 28/08/2020 14:53

I usually bring a bottle of wine and some nice chocolates

icedaisy · 28/08/2020 14:54

We stay in the country and my friend in the city.

So she brings stuff I can't just easily get here. Krispie cream doughnuts tray. Would need to do a two hour drive to get to those.

Marks and spencer nibbles and treats. Nearest marks is about 1.5 hours.

Then she always brings some booze.

We take her fresh eggs, veg, beef and lamb. Again she couldn't just easily get.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/08/2020 15:02

Plant, some sort of alcohol and some decent chocolates.

AryaStarkWolf · 28/08/2020 15:04

I'd probably bring wine and flowers and treat them to a take away or dinner out one of the evenings

vanillandhoney · 28/08/2020 15:06

A nice bottle of wine or the drink of their choice.
Maybe some local delicacies from your area.
Nice flowers/chocolates.
Maybe ask if you can provide dessert on one night, or offer to pay for a takeaway for everyone.

One bottle of wine sounds mean! Unless it's something stonkingly wonderful!

Annabanana455 · 28/08/2020 15:13

I’ve had two sets of friends recently to stay.

One bought a small box of chocs, bottle of wine & offered to pay half when I bought a takeaway. That was lovely & appreciated.

The other didn’t get anything & let me pay for all dinners. I did feel a bit put out. I don’t expect anything lavish but it’s the thought / gesture that counts.

I usually take gorgeous flowers and buy any meals out or takeaways/deliveroo and do the washing up

redcarbluecar · 28/08/2020 17:24

Two decent bottles of wine, assuming they drink. Pay for something when out.

AdaColeman · 28/08/2020 17:31

Nice bottle of fizz, some gin, a fancy cake if you can transport it easily, interesting cheese, bottle of port; any combination of these would be good.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/08/2020 17:37

Agree with all the wine, flowers, good chocolate, etc
If they live rurally, the intention to pay for a takeaway may not pan out - I particularly liked the suggestion of looking at things they will struggle to get locally.
Post weekend - hand written thank you note.

ThaGugaBlasta · 28/08/2020 18:35

Nice wine, and some indulgent chocolate(s) - I don't really drink, so always appreciate it when guests bring something for me!

I was about to add 'a nice scented candle' as I really like them, but tread carefully if they have pets; our last weekend guests handed over a very nice one, and then insisted it wasn't because our house reeked of dogs, which of course has now made me paranoid that our house does indeed reek of dogs.

Tropicalsunshine · 28/08/2020 18:46

I live in the country and have lots of friends to stay for the weekend. I love it and always stock up on food for them and the kids. Bringing one bottle of wine is simply not enough. I apologise if you don't drink but if you do... Be honest with yourself about how much you will drink over a long weekend and bring all of it! Over 3 dinners many couples will easily drink 3 bottles of wine, if not more. My friends show up with wine, prosecco, beers, fancy chocs and...their own towels!

LouisBalfour · 28/08/2020 18:51

I would take lots of wine for a weekend. One bottle is tight, even if it’s a good one.

I’d also take a good cheeseboard, chutneys etc and usually make a pudding.

DollyParton2 · 28/08/2020 19:51

Thanks all!!
I’ve got bottle champagne, bottle nice wine, choccies, beers & pudding. Should’ve got flowers too damn...

purplecorkheart · 28/08/2020 19:56

Wine, foodie bits that they will use but not necessarily when you are there like really good olive oil, good cheese, deli items etc.
