An airplane seat one- not had one of these for a while

Was flying back from holiday yesterday in an aisle seat. There was a mother and daughter on the plane, the daughter being about 14. They had originally been sat in someone else's extra legroom seats at the front and had to then move to the row behind me where there was an empty aisle seat. The daughter was very vocal about being unhappy with how little room she was going to have then insisted she had to have her suitcase at her feet which the cabin crew did not police.

Shortly after take off the woman in the seat next to me started vomiting. I am emetaphobic so as soon as I could I moved to the aisle seat behind.

Well you would think I was devil incarnate
The daughter and the mum made passive aggressive comments for a lot of the flight to each other. They wanted to stretch out and sleep and now they couldn't. The daughter said she couldn't handle this. They both had their suitcases at their feet so the mum's shoes were in my leg space, but no effort was made to move them. Lots of pointed elbowing when I was trying to sleep and just general whinging. I was damned if I was going to react and just ignored them. It was clear this entitled mum was raising an equally as entitled daughter. They must have known there was a strong chance there would be someone else in their space but they were just so annoyed by it.

When they got off the mum pulled a woman's hair quite hard by mistake but I heard her laughing about it with her daughter in baggage reclaim as the woman had pulled her up on pushing in shortly after so this apparently was funny.

I am sure I wasn't unreasonable but it would be great to hear about other entitled passengers. I I have always loved hearing these stories

I am Cabin Crew.

I have seen it all. I would rather have a plane full of children than adults.

PablosHoney · 28/08/2020 18:34

😂😂 Oh please start a thread of cabin crew stories @this

ripples101 · 28/08/2020 18:37

For serving me food that was someone else’s leftovers from a previous flight.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 28/08/2020 18:37

We were once waiting to take off on a flight from LA to London and were pleased to have been given extra legroom seats when we had checked in.

A couple came up and announced that we were in their seats. They weren't very polite about it but we immediately checked our boarding passes which confirmed we were in the correct seats. The other couple produced identical boarding passes and insisted we move. They were really annoyed but we didn't know what to do.

The steward came to try and sort things out after the rude couple complained and he politely asked if we would mind moving. I was about to protest when DH gave he a sharp dig with his elbow and hissed at me to just move. He told me later that the steward had whispered to him that he had found us nicer seats.

We were then shown to the upper class cabin and were handed a duvet ,a pair of PJs and a glass of champagne.

We had a lovely flight home.

I was on a flight from Dubai to Birmingham with my daughter.We were in Centre Economy seats.I noticed a lot of activity a couple of rows down,what a shame that man feels ill said I to my daughter.oh he isn’t ill said she,he is complaining about his meal!! It ended up with him being brought a meal through from Business Class!! Occupied the cabin crew so much that my daughter missed out on a round of drinks.As there were three Cabin Crew dancing attendance on the moron.

I was furious,complained to Emirates and was told they would pass my concerns on.Pay for Business Class if you want that much attention!!

Thisismytimetoshine · 28/08/2020 18:41

@ripples101

For serving me food that was someone else’s leftovers from a previous flight.
Yes, I've managed to grasp that, thanks. I mean what harm did you actually come to as a result of this? Thinking you're entitled to "Serious compensation" is bizarre.
PablosHoney · 28/08/2020 18:41

@ripples101 yes, if it was obvious they were leftovers then you probably wouldn’t have eaten them and if it wasn’t obvious then it stands to reason it was a genuine mistake, you should have asked for a fresh one at the time surely, you may have got a complimentary drink out of it at best.

itsgettingweird · 28/08/2020 18:49

@HelpOrHindrance

I was on a perfectly nice Virgin Atlantic flight, sitting next to a man that complained about everything and nothing. He exclaimed to the cabin crew at one point, "I don't have this trouble when I fly BA" to which the cabin replied, "WE don't have this trouble when you fly BA"

It shut him right up!

That's a hilarious response Grin
pjmask · 28/08/2020 18:50

@Lepetitpiggy
Portugal isn't the same as Greece - print out your passenger locator form and fill it in, then you hand it to the staff on the aircraft

You can only fit two peoples details on each form so you may need more than one if you are a family

ripples101 · 28/08/2020 18:51

Not disputing that it was a genuine mistake.

I didn’t even realise until I started eating it.

But it is pretty disgusting to be served leftovers from a previous flight is it not?

No matter. The value in posting this incident wasn’t meant to be about any compensation I may or may not have got. It was just about the incident itself.

But you two knock yourselves out.

toffeecashews · 28/08/2020 18:53

@workhomesleeprepeat - I think some couples do this because they think that people will avoid the middle seat, so they will end up with a free seat between them - they’ll get three seats and pay for two.

I think many people do avoid the middle seat, we've seen couples (sitting together chatting in the lounge before the flight) with an empty seat between us on the Dubai-Sydney route many times. It's a flight that's not often full and being long haul most in economy are couples/families who want to sit together.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 28/08/2020 18:59

I've been known to book the middle seat when travelling alone. Especially when I have booked last minute and there were plenty of unsold tickets.

It worked once, when I got 3 seats to myself for the flight. Someone moved into the aisle seat about half way through the flight and that was fine. I didn't need 3, 2 was plenty.

I am also very happy to swap seats if a couple do take the ones either side.

Lepetitpiggy · 28/08/2020 19:00

pjmask Thanks!! I've printed a couple out so will fill out and take with me.

damnthatanxiety · 28/08/2020 19:00

@toodlepipsqueaks

Oh they sound a treat 😂 you definitely weren't being unreasonable!

I remember my first long haul flight, the person next to me had brought a blanket and several pillows. Fair enough, I thought,
until she decided to get comfy by snuggling up and putting her head on my chest (whilst still awake)! She couldn't be shifted til we landed almost 10 hours later...DP thought it was hilarious!

Why didn't you just tell her to piss off? Or stand up. Not sure I understand this post.
EggyPegg · 28/08/2020 19:03

Not the plane, but the train years ago. DH and I had pre-booked our seats on a long train journey (around 4 hours). We got on, and the train was jam packed. Standing room only. Found our seats with two women sat in them (fair enough up to that point). We showed them our tickets, and pointed out the reserved tickets sticking out of the seats and politely asked them to move. We got a barrel of abuse and they declared that the were there first, so we should find somewhere else to sit. We stood firm though and refused. We had booked those seats and we were not standing. They did eventually move, with much muttering.

Coming home from our holiday in February, our flight was cancelled because of storms in the UK. We managed to transfer to another flight three days later. We got the whole back row. Six seats for the 4 of us. DH and I too an aisle seat each and gave the DC the wall (no window that far back). It was the most comfortable flight I've been on. Unfortunately,the cabin crew hung out just behind us for the duration of the flight that they weren't doing the trolley. And one in particular (about 19/20) proceeded to yap absolute crap for the whole flight. About her parents divorce, her boyfriend, her nights out. Please, please, please STFU!

@BeingATwatItsABingThing

I’ve just remembered another one.

On an EasyJet flight with no allocated seating. I got one of the last remaining seats in the middle of a row of three. Thought nothing of it until the man in the aisle seat and the woman in the window seat started talking over me and passing things between them. They were married and I had to sit awkwardly in between them for the whole flight.

Why didn't you just swap seats?
Withthemonsters · 28/08/2020 19:09

I was on the first TUI flight out to one of the Canary Islands after COVID restrictions were lifted (very full), and on the first flight back a week later. The plane was mostly empty, but a bloke decided to take issue with a random woman moving seats (everyone else was too) and wouldn't stop shouting and swearing at her. He and another bloke (maybe brother/friend) got kicked off the flight in the end, but not before they'd delayed us for 30 mins (although we were leaving early anyway so not a hardship).
Me and my mom sometimes book a window and aisle seat if we're flying together (and only if it's free seat booking, if we have to pay we don't bother). I like to sit by the window to look out and she needs to use the toilet a lot so prefers the aisle. But we don't tend to talk much, maybe once or twice just to ask the other to pass something, so I hope we're not too annoying.

PablosHoney · 28/08/2020 19:13

But @ripples101 you brought up the compensation 😂😂 You should have used some of that stroppiness on the cabin crew.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/08/2020 19:14

Had I spoken up I reckon I could have got serious compensation for that

Depending on who you spoke up to, the airline could have had worse problems than just compensating you

I'd have to check with a pal who works for them, but I'm pretty sure there are strict rules about disposing of edibles after international flights - and they'd certainly include open containers of cooked and partly eaten food

MulticolourMophead · 28/08/2020 19:16

@damnthatanxiety If there was no allocated seating, that suggests the couple chose those seats, and would likely have turned down the offfer to swap seats.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 28/08/2020 19:17

My dsis is diabetic, so special meals, she’d also got lymphoma after a mastectomy so had booked an aisle seat as she knew that was most comfortable. On flight from Australia she was in 14 c or whatever, gets to her seat and of course there’s someone in it, so excuse me. Woman looks at her blankly and says “oh I’ve fallen out with my bf, can you swap seats? No funnily enough. Then meals were coming out, but she was reading, but thought, no rush. Waited for her meal, no sign. Called attendant, who looked flustered, she said oh, that lady over there had it. Now dsis is not a shrinking violet, so says well find out why? Mrs 16c had decided sis’s dinner looked nicer and she didn’t want to wait so she told the attendant that they’d swapped seats. However, the only suitable meal was from business class, so sis got that.

I have generally been okay on flights.

In January we flew to Sweden (so a short flight) I always prebook seats, we were in premium (I don’t fit in standard economy, I’m only six foot but I’m all leg. My son was in the window seat so its easier for him to sleep, I’m in the middle and my boyfriend in the aisle. The lady in front asks if one of us can move so she and her adult son can sit across the aisle from each other. Obviously I wouldn’t sit anyway from my then four year old, my boyfriend also has a physical disability so needs quite a bit of help so I would be constantly getting up. I explained why I couldn’t move. She then starts shrieking (very much like Moira from Schitts Creek!) that her little boy can’t sit near his mummy. Her adult son looked so embarrassed, it took cabin crew a good ten minutes to get to be quiet. She continued to moan throughout the flight, despite being able to clearly see that I was either doing things for my four year old or my boyfriend.

Once a flight from the states I was in a window seat so the passenger next to me kindly passed me a drink (I had paid for) to save the member of staff leaning over. But the passenger took a sip before giving me my drink.

Last year me and my son went to the rugby world cup, I splashed out on the seats as its a long flight and it was my sons first ever flight, he had only just turned four. In business class it pretty much was just typical business class customers rather than holiday makers. The look of horror in their faces when they saw us! Luckily he was very good and slept for most of the flight, when he was awake we had lots of (quiet and not annoying) things to play with to keep him entertained.
