Lifeguard assessment, with a finger fracture

Yesterday DS (16) got an avulsion fracture to the ring finger of his left hand. The walk-in centre x-rayed it and buddy-bound it to his middle finger pending an appointment with a fracture clinic elsewhere. See photo. He can't straighten it or make a fist without pain, but otherwise it isn't hurting.

This morning he has gone off to the final day of an NPLQ course. The trainer suggested he completes the training hours today (taking due care) but leaves the assessment to a later date. (If he does any part of the assessment he'll need to complete it within 28 days, which may not be possible, so she said it is better to do it all in one go).

That advice seems sensible to me, but DS told me he will "see how it goes" ... he's hoping he'll be able to swim without pain and therefore might be able to complete the assessment today. I'm clearly worried that he will worsen the fracture.

Is anyone here familiar with the NPLQ assessment? I'm wondering whether it is in any way do-able it is with this sort of hand injury. I know he will need to pull someone out of the pool, but he said that is done in a pair rather than on his own.

DS has had the same injury, he swims competitively. The first few days are the most painful in the pool apparently. He needed a couple of days out of training, but was back by about day 4. He kept it strapped until just before racing and alternated paracetamol and ibuprofen to deal with the pain- fly turns and finishes- this would have been about 10 days after the fracture.
