I cannot use cling film!!!!

I consider myself to be a somewhat intelligent and well rounded individual but I cannot for the effing life of me get cling film to cling as it should. It just immediately balls up into an unusable mess. I can't keep the roll in the box with the little cardboard tabs. The cutter thingy will not go through the thinnest plastic known to man but I've cut my own finger more time than I care to remember.

So please share your adulting fails. Make me feel better.. pretty please!

I have up with clingdilm @LMW1990, I've got a set of funny silicon stretchy things instead. They come in various sizes and you just stretch them over the cup, plate, bowl, half lemon etc instead. They also have the bonus of cutting down on single use plastics, win-win Grin

*gave up

LMW1990 · 26/08/2020 22:29

@mysa74 what is this wizardry?! Sounds like something from my dreams!

I bloody hate cling film.. Tis the devil’s work.

I don’t understand how , no matter whether I use a glass, enamel, ceramic or non stick dish, and irrespective of whether I’ve brushed it with butter or oil or nothing, my stuffing always sticks and we get barely a teaspoon each out of the dish.

Mysa74 · 26/08/2020 22:32

Mine are from another company, I have pink and yellow sets. They're water tight and everything.

Mysa74 · 26/08/2020 22:36

Google silicone clingfilm replacer. They work on any shape even though they're round. They aren't expensive either.

MarthasGinYard · 26/08/2020 22:42

Cling on film

Cannot abide the stuff

Happycow · 26/08/2020 22:45

@MYSA74 these look great! I also hate clingfilm, the bastard stuff ends up in one giant string before ive finished tearing it off the roll...

But what can i use to cover a mug of bakes beans or baby food in the microwave ?? Do you reckon i could put a hole in a couple of them for microwave use or would they just rip straight across?

CatherineCoward · 26/08/2020 22:52

You need to remove the film
role from the box and step away from the serrated edge... you
clearly cannot be trusted around sharp edges.

Take the film in your right hand and look at the "thing" you need to cover. Guesstimate how much cling you will need to use to cover the item you are looking at covering. Using your freshly manicured nails, pierce/rip tear/muddle the amount of film
you think you think you need to cover your food item using your shellac nails . It will then be overcome by static and sort of crumple into a blob. Don't worry, this is normal . Allow yourself 4 clear days to unravel the blob of film. Your food will still be quite fresh, it knows it takes this long to cover it and self preserves.

After day 4 and you have unravelled square of film, place firmly over foodstuffs. Continue to apply pressure around the edges, apply your full body weight, engage the help of sumo wrestlers and superglue if needed.

Ta da.... you are done and have successfully cling filmed.

Have a gin & vermouth and celebrate!

NeedToKnow101 · 26/08/2020 22:53

Are you my mum? She can destroy a perfectly serviceable roll of cling film in seconds.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/08/2020 22:58

I have largely moved over to the stretchy silicone lids too, but do still have some cling film which is stored in a wonderful dispenser made by Lakeland. I highly recommend it.

Defender90 · 26/08/2020 23:04

Same. I don't buy it at all now, DDad often brings me things wrapped in cling film, I watch him wrap things in cling film.

It sticks to everything, itself, my nails (gel polish) the knife the chopping board. Never to what I want to wrap. So it's Tupperware all the way here.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 26/08/2020 23:09

I also loathe cling film! I’ve just bought some stretchy lids! Thanks!

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 26/08/2020 23:09

Dd will be so happy as she is keen for everything to be eco friendly

FreeButtonBee · 26/08/2020 23:12

Cling film only clings to itself! That was a revelation I had only 3 years ago. Since then it’s fucking god in my house. Also I only buy the massive catering size rolls of like 50m with a proper chopper. But I got a soda stream at the same time so that balances out the plastic use as I no longer buy fizzy water

DukeOfEarlGrey · 26/08/2020 23:16

Clingfilm is a bastard.

Flubber88 · 26/08/2020 23:19

Clingfilm also hates me. I feel your pain.

winterisstillcoming · 26/08/2020 23:21

Yes! It only sticks to itself. And go big! Also it needs pinning down and tension always. So only tear it once you've wrapped it around the whole thing. Not a little lid on the top no no. All the way around. Then tear it off and squash down the edges. You will be a pro. Do not however use it for sandwiches. You will have to squash them to get the tension and if there is no tension it will become loose and fall off.

LMW1990 · 27/08/2020 10:56

I feel better that I'm not the only one! Thanks guys!

I'm also crap at cutting bread. Like really crumbs everywhere, uneven slices, shit.

I don't think I should be a grown up..

recklessruby · 27/08/2020 11:02

Clingfilm is the devil s work.
I can't use sellotape successfully. Wrapping Christmas presents I lose it 75 times and I lose the "end" no matter how I try and fold it over or stick it to the table.
This is why I drink a bottle of Baileys every time at Christmas!
I m also a proper grown up. Teacher, mum of two, manage to pay my bills and drive my car but sellotape defeats me.

Still1nLove · 27/08/2020 11:11

Put the open edge of the film around the right side of what you are covering, open film to the length you need and then score the film with a knife, then pull the roll so it comes off. Then stretch the piece so the edges go over and under what you are covering. I hope this makes sense

No matter how old I get...
OneTC · 27/08/2020 11:17

I might have been one of these people but apparently some people don't realise you don't tear the film off the roll until after you've applied it.

This changes everything for some people, possibly including me

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 27/08/2020 11:20

Second the stretchy lids and also some reusable beeswax sheets for wrapping sandwiches and stuff. Haven't bought bastard clingfilm in over a year.

toomanyspiderplants · 27/08/2020 11:22

clingfilm.....its just not necessary. ...its awful for the environment so your fail is actually a win!
