To ask is this a toxic bush?? DS ate a berry!

So it's a bush in our large communal garden, he climbed up onto the raised beds saw the berries and ate one before I could jump over the bush and reach him. He is 2. I have no idea on plants and I really really hope it's not poisonous!

Sorry to post on here but I'm panicking and I know a lot of you are good with plants.

I think it’s either a sloe berry or a black current.

JustCallMeGriffin · 26/08/2020 17:21

It might be blackthorne which some folk turn into gin.

Bumping for hopefully someone better than my 30 years out of date safe berry knowledge to answer for you.

One berry at worst means an upset stomach. I don't think we have any berries more toxic than that native in the UK.

LadyBoobysBucket · 26/08/2020 17:22

I don’t think it’s either sloe or black currant.

Looks like cherry laurel to me, if so it is poisonous.

MrsMonkeyBear · 26/08/2020 17:22

Potentially, it looks like Inkberry holly. Id call 111 and see what they say.

Justanother123 · 26/08/2020 17:22

Looks like inkberry. They aren’t edible - maybe call 111 for advice?

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 26/08/2020 17:22

Hmm I it could be a privet. I can't quite see. If it is I would take him in pronto. I dont think they're very good for you.

MILdesperandum · 26/08/2020 17:22

Looks like an inkberry

MulticolourMophead · 26/08/2020 17:23

It's not blackcurrant, looks more like sloes.

GalOopNorth · 26/08/2020 17:23

Laurel and yes I think it is poisonous.

Definitely NOT either sloe or black currant

Craiglang · 26/08/2020 17:24

Definitely not a blackcurrant, they have distinctive leaves.

I think it's much more likely a cherry laurel, unfortunately. Call NHS 24 ASAP.

Widdendream77 · 26/08/2020 17:25

It’s not current or sloe or blackthorn but I’m afraid I don’t know what it is but bumping for you. Perhaps call 111?

IamMaz · 26/08/2020 17:25

Definitely NOT blackcurrant or sloe. Sadly I don't recognise what it is.

Craiglang · 26/08/2020 17:25

If they ask you to go in, make sure you take a berry and leaves with you!

user127819 · 26/08/2020 17:25

I don't think sloe or blackthorne either. Both those berries look more blue. It does look a bit like cherry laurel. I think I would call 111 to be safe.

Hiccupiscal · 26/08/2020 17:25

Its not sloe.

There's an app you can download that will scan plants, i can't remember the name of it but i would look up "plant identification' in play store.

It will tell you if toxic etc

Coughsyrupsucks · 26/08/2020 17:26

If you do end up going to A&E take a cutting with the leaves and berries on with you, they have a poison plant book. Harder to tell from a photo. Had the same problem when DD was 2.

GalOopNorth · 26/08/2020 17:26

Ok looked it up. Definitely cherry Laurel, definitely very toxic. Not sure what quantities but I would be going to a and e

Rocketpants50 · 26/08/2020 17:26

There is an app you can download to your phone, take a photo of fruit/ leaf and it will tell you what it is, v handy.

Rocketpants50 · 26/08/2020 17:26

Plant net is the one I use.

Witchend · 26/08/2020 17:27

@JustCallMeGriffin

2 berries of deadly nightshade can kill a child.

Thankfully that does not look like it, so I'd phone fir advice unless you can get a positive identification.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 26/08/2020 17:28

Plant identification app says cherry laurel. Poisonous.

brightbluegentian · 26/08/2020 17:28

Yes to it being it being poisonous. If in doubt take a sample and get your DS checked out.

TheRosariojewels · 26/08/2020 17:29

Definitely not sloe or Blackcurrant. Looks like a young cherry laurel to me. Cherry Laurel stone/pips are poisonous and the fruit shouldn't be eaten.
