To not want to watch a video about things all the time

Cheeseandlobster · 26/08/2020 07:05

I find it so annoying sometimes when I am looking for info on the internet but the only options are to watch videos on it instead. I don't want to sit through adverts and then a 10 min video full of waffle to find info when I could skim read about it in 1 minute.

Today I was reading a page on sleep routines and without warning it switched to a clip of the writer talking about it instead. So that's me put off then. Does anyone else get annoyed by this or am I a grumpy old cow?

I like YouTube for entertainment and I often enjoy watching a recipe or craft video if it's something I haven't made before but if I just want some quick info on how to do something then it's annoying. I especially hate the blogs with a long essay prologue, hundreds of pop ups, ads, video and everything I find they freeze my tablet and I just give up.

Morfin · 26/08/2020 07:33

Sadly I think skim reading is a skill that is being lost. It's also an age thing. Our school now produces video newsletters as they found a much higher percentage of students would watch the video but not read the text.

toomanyspiderplants · 26/08/2020 07:33

Oh me too! so slow and impossible to refer back to. And the recipe blogs. ....I mean, no one reads them do they, just scroll down to the annoyingly American recipe. ( all purpose flour, cups etc)

SquirrelFan · 26/08/2020 07:33

I quite agree. Videos have their 'demonstrating' place, but for news, or self-help, or information, I much prefer text.
I do worry about the shrinking of the human attention span. Over 50 here...

StealthPolarBear · 26/08/2020 07:34

"white cake mix"
:o

Ginfordinner · 26/08/2020 07:40

American recipes just do my head in. What is a stick of butter?

The food videos on Facebook are how it should be done. They are speeded up ans show some brilliant technical stuff like cake decorating.

Aweebawbee · 26/08/2020 07:45

My people!

The cartoon information-type ones are the worst. You sit there waiting for the small detail that you need while they pleasure themselves with their infantile graphics and soundtrack. The designer is clearly very proud of his witty creation, but has forgotten the point of the video. You wait for the key information...and wait, then finally there it is...oh, its gone. Skimmed over and forgotten. Maybe actual information ruins the aesthetic of the masterpiece, maybe the creators don't know the answer to your question either. Why did you just waste 7 minutes of your life?

UnaOfStormhold · 26/08/2020 07:46

Oh yes! There are times when it is useful to see something being done but normally text is so much better! The number of times I've grudgingly spent ten minutes watching a video only to find that the critical bit of information isn't there when I could have found that out in seconds. I'm also a very fast reader so definitely prefer getting my information that way.

Crylittlesister · 26/08/2020 07:49

Totally agree. Tried to change my existing bank account to a slightly different one. Been with the same bank for 28 years. He wanted me to watch a 10 minute video on my consumer rights and the banking code. I told him I would check my emails while it was on as if he could not give me written materials, I refused to gawp at a screen for that long, wasting my time.
He refused to change my account as I had not 'engaged' with the information.

notheragain4 · 26/08/2020 07:51

Oh god yes, because the video is never short and to the point, it always has self-important waffle for infinite amounts of time as they love to hear themselves speak. GET TO THE POINT.

It's especially irritating when you're in a bad mood and just trying to fix your vacuum. I don't need your life story Bill, tell me how to unclip the damn plastic case!

FuzzyPuffling · 26/08/2020 07:51

Yes, yes YES! I have been grumpy about this for some time. My pet bugbear is health related stuff...I want to read information ( so I can concentrate on and re-read bits that are important to me) not have to listen to a "one speed" monologue, how ever much of an expert it is from. Written word every time for me.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 26/08/2020 07:54

Oh videos, people like watching them. Byeeeee

ScrapThatThen · 26/08/2020 07:55

Yes, I like text not video. I hate this on the news too. But when we produce things for the website at work the constant feedback is that young people want videos not written information. So I am afraid it is our age.
The long rambling recipes on blogs is just to fit more personalised ads on the page as you scroll through I presume.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 26/08/2020 07:55

Clung was supposed to be count!

Whenwillow · 26/08/2020 07:56

Skim reader here. I very rarely watch videos. Occasionally they are useful, but mostly not.
It annoys me when people send me videos they want me to watch.
I'm quite old too!

AngusThermopyle · 26/08/2020 08:05

Oo me too, mostly with recipes!

Just give me the recipe ingredients, i know how to cook, I don't need a video Grin

picklemewalnuts · 26/08/2020 08:07

My two DSs 20 24 learn everything via video given the chance. They watch on double speed, but still...

Ginfordinner · 26/08/2020 08:07

With text you can go back and re-read stuff, especially if it is instructions,. Videos are a faff to rewind because locating the bit you need to see again is a lottery.

I hate the assumption that everyone has the attention span of an amoeba and are incapable of reading.

LittleBearPad · 26/08/2020 08:08

YANBU! It’s so irritating

ThickFast · 26/08/2020 08:10

I hate it!!! I’m 30s. Don’t think that classes as old.... I can’t stand videos for things. Unless it’s a specific thing that I need to actually see. Like when I took my car radio out the other day and added a cable to the back so I can play things off my phone. I watched a YouTube tutorial first. But everything else I prefer written.

superram · 26/08/2020 08:11

I’m with you!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/08/2020 08:13

Yes, very annoying, especially when the person/their voice is irritating - I I am easily irritated!

I only want to be shown something when it’s necessary, e.g. recently, how to knit an i-cord, since the sodding pattern instructions weren’t at all clear. 😡

rookiemere · 26/08/2020 08:16

I've thought of another example. I used to do parkrun. I'd love to know when parkrun is on again. In order to do that I'd need to watch Facebook clips by the parkrun organiser, I don't want to do that so I have no idea of current state of play. I don't understand why they can't provide a written summary of the key points as well as the video.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/08/2020 08:16

Yes, this exactly.

FaintlyMacabre · 26/08/2020 08:17

I thought it was just me! (And DH) . Must be a generation thing, the DC are always trying to show me videos and I just can’t bear them. Ironically I think I’m simultaneously too impatient to watch videos and have a better attention span for reading than younger people!
