Vote: Masks in Secondaries in local lockdowns too late?

TDGH1234ANON · 25/08/2020 22:09

Following on from previous thread on mask voting.
YABU = this is enough
YANBU = this is not enough as it's already spread through the local community. Masks are needed to prevent a local lockdown from happening in the first place.

Any votes this morning?

I will now be wearing a mask but that mainly protects the pupils. If I'm to stay well and therefore present we will all need them (secondary). If there's a local lockdown I would expect far stronger measures than just masks. If that's all the crumbs were offered, I'm off (awaits posters telling me to sling my hook then, without telling me what alternative I have).

twinkletoesimnot · 26/08/2020 08:18

I think it's too late once a local lockdown happens as lots of people will be isolating or affected by then anyway- surely you want to try to avoid that level of disruption.

bellinisurge · 26/08/2020 08:31

Too fucking late. In a lockdown area. More muddled half arsed shite . More stress on kids.
We are the test run for the rest of schools in England.
Level up? More like patronise and forget.

SexTrainGlue · 26/08/2020 08:47

This does suggest that they expect schools to remain open under local lockdowns as currently envisaged

Though I suppose there will be a tiered approach to what restrictions are pit in place, depending on many factors about the outbreak

TDGH1234ANON · 26/08/2020 08:51

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks the Govt are insane and incompetent.

Something can be both “too late” and “better late than never”.

TDGH1234ANON · 26/08/2020 08:55

@museumum I'm not sure you get the sentiment. Why should teachers lives be put at risk? Or any other adult for that matter. If they wear masks from the start hopefully lives can be saved. Especially in winter flu season when windows will be closed.

I think if you’re at the point of needing a local lockdown, schools should close temporarily and do remote learning.

Schools staying open will depend on their ability to staff them though, not on the government deciding that they must.

Quite. And if I end up with Covid I won't be dragging myself in after seven days if I'm still suffering shortness of breath. I won't be thrown under a bus only to stagger back up and wait for the next one.

I don’t think teachers lives should be at risk but at what level of the virus in the community would you want to wear a mask and enforce mask wearing on others?

If 1 in 100 people in my city might have it - hell yes!
1 in 1000 - maybe
1 in 1 million - probably not actually.

(But I fully support individuals choosing to wear addition ppe if they choose).

bellinisurge · 26/08/2020 09:42

Blame parents. Blame teachers. Blame children. Blame Northerners. Blame everyone but the government when outbreaks happen in schools.
That is government policy these days.

Only up to a point. Closure of schools could be directed as part of a local lockdown

You need an alternative vote for masks should not be here at all

itsgettingweird · 27/08/2020 11:35

Think it's too late once in local lockdown.

I think they need to decide one way or another.

Either everyone over 11 needs a mask in public spaces or they don't.

But to need one in a shop etc with SD and not in school with no SD makes no sense.

They should read the science and make a decision!

iolaus · 27/08/2020 11:52

So in England you have to wear them in shops but not schools (unless in local lockdown)

And in Wales we don't have to wear them in shops but senior schools you have to wear them in communal areas in schools?

But Schools are only just opening in areas with local lockdowns so it cant be too late

What about future local lockdowns?
Quartz2208 · 27/08/2020 12:38

I think its the phrasing of it that is bothering me - pedantic editor.

Most of my local high schools though are implementing the masks now before a local lockdown is needed

Are masks mandatory in factories for workers?

TDGH1234ANON · 27/08/2020 17:56

@Quartz2208 sorry, you are right, that's just how I speak, personal colloquialism. It did mean after a local lockdown has been put in place. To be honest, I only expected those up to date with the news to vote so they would understand regardless.
