AIBU to think How on earth do normal people afford to live there? 4 bed terrace house £10 million, this looks like an average price, is there any normal priced houses there at all?

No, but it is very very pricy.
No idea what the people do that live there it they are rich!

Bellabelles · 25/08/2020 21:32

There is a lot of social housing locally so the area is pretty mixed particularly in the W10 end around Ladbroke Grove. To me it feels like an area of extremes - lots of very wealthy families and a fair amount of social deprivation side by side but very little in the middle. It’s not where I would choose to live if I had £10million to spend!

JoJoSM2 · 25/08/2020 21:35

I worked in state schools there and yes, not much in the middle. Either the super rich or celebrities etc or people in social housing.

Why the question?

Spidey66 · 25/08/2020 21:37

I was going to say, lots of social housing. Also possibly people who've lived there for 30-40 years before it became extortionate.

Just went there for lunch the other day, loved the area, so looked on rightmove at prices, I was shocked I thought it would be expensive but wow. I don’t really get why you would spend that on a 4 bed terrace either, i’m intrigued where they find buyers for these houses?

That’s not an average price, no. I have friends who bought a lovely three bedroom mews house in Notting Hull last year and I think they paid just shy of £1.3 million.

Of course when you say “normal people” and “normal prices”, it depends on your definition of both of those things - if you live in a northern town where a five bed detached house with a garden costs about £200K and most people in your social circle earn around the national average wage then that’s your normal.

People who can afford £10 million are more likely to be foreign. But London is also a huge financial services centre and has an ever-growing tech and fin-tech scene where a six figure salary is run of the mill.

JoJoSM2 · 25/08/2020 22:05

Not not sure where they find the buyers but I do wonder myself considering the prices are inflated to this level. But then there are other areas, eg Knightsbridge or Mayfair which are also beyond ridiculously pricey. You do need a very high net worth to even contemplate blowing millions on a pokey place with no special features.

JoJoSM2 · 25/08/2020 22:11

I just looked and the10M terraces are 6,000sq ft. So the price per sq ft isn’t that high. Probably not many places in central(ish) London can you actually get that amount of space under one roof surrounded by similarly wealthy neighbours.

No, but I live on the outskirts of Oxford. I really liked the Jericho area, and thought we could buy a house there. How very wrong I was! Some areas in the UK have a prestige that hypes the prices up. Notting Hill is the same.

WorraLiberty · 25/08/2020 22:17

My BIL has a council flat on a pretty grim estate there.

GreyGardens88 · 25/08/2020 22:23

I live nearby, Notting Hill and Holland Park have a couple of nice streets but generally quite rough around the edges, with lots of noise, grime and undesirables knocking about.

Definitely not where I would choose to live if I was uber rich

takenbywine · 25/08/2020 22:30

If I had that much money I still wouldn't want to live there. It's beautiful yes but it doesn't seem very family friendly. Ok Hyde Park is in walking distance but it's not a place where you could easily take your kids out for a bike ride or could play outside. I really like Notting Hill and Holland Park area where you have loads cafes, restaurants and excellent transport links but as pp's there's a wealth divide between the ultra wealthy people and the social housing community. Also, the footfall is very high were it's also a touristic attraction (Portobello Road- From the film Notting Hill) so at times, it's very busy. If I had 10 million, I would like to be out in the countryside in a secluded place imo.

Londonmummy66 · 25/08/2020 22:34

Analyse why you want to live there. If it is the nice shops etc look at between the commons in Clapham, if it is the architecture look at Stockwell,if it is the ability to get on the M4 look at Ealing....

Lyricallie · 25/08/2020 22:59

I actually used to live there, near Stella McCartney's house!

However I was a warden in halls and I had 90 first year students to look after. Was bliss during summer when I still got to live there and they all go home Smile
