To think kitchen Islands are the artex of the future?

I was watching a home renovation programme and every time they stick these massive blocks in the middle of the kitchen before ripping out the walls to 'connect' to
the garden. This time the island was a huge rectangle and took up most of the room with a little table in the space at the end. I can so image the future shows having people walking around and identifying these as the first thing to rip out and exclaiming over how much space they gain.

why wouldn't you have a kitchen table in place of the island (as an extra work surface and place to sit) and then put a sofa up the other end
My island has a sink, a hob and a work surface, so I can cook facing the room/someone sitting at the island - that's what I wanted, I do a lot of cooking - I enjoy chatting to my dh while I cook or the other way around, we enjoy each other's company - I didn't want to face the wall when I cooked. The table - we always eat at the table - that's essential but the table is not a suitable height to substitute for a work surface unless you are very short - our island is very practical and we have enough room for two sofas as well - so no worries there either. And we have more rooms downstairs other than the kitchen if peace and quiet is needed. Boast, Boast, Boast!😂

The pink sink thing reminds me of the fashion editors who tried to convince people for years that skinny jeans were no longer fashionable and that bootlegs are back - but very few paid heed - bootlegs still look dated (unless you are Kate Moss) and people still love their skinnies (which were seen as a fad quite a few years ago).

Agreed. Elle can push it all they want but installing pink or avocado bathroom suites is still not happening. In fact the opposite is. If someone buys a house with a coloured bathroom suite they rip it out as quickly as they can afford.

In no shape nor form has pink bathroom suites made a come back..honestly don’t believe it’s fashionable as someone wrote an article on it. 🤣

Didn't say it was fashionable!🙄

Just saying I'm beginning to see "something". Maybe I'm on alert as I work in this sector.

Sophie Robinson Interiors just put one in her bathroom. And she would as she adores colour. And they are getting expensive ( pink) on ebay.

Sometimes things take YEARS to trickle down - ( if they do at all )
Just like skinny jeans.
And then you can't remember when you didn't wear them.

I wouldn't go ripping out your white though!

@ShadowsInTheDarkness that sounds delightful but I live in a 1980s house so it would look silly with beams and small rooms. Without wishing to boast boast boast I already have three other reception rooms with sofas in (and some outside) so I don’t feel short of somewhere to sit.

Aha there may be something in this. I am indeed very short and hadn't clocked that for someone taller a table may be too low Blush I should have done though, as I usually use the table over the worktops as they are a bit too high for whisking or chopping things. Fine for making a sandwich but anything else and I use the kitchen table. Just to clarify we do also have other rooms with sofas for sitting. I just like to be able to sit on a comfy chair while dinners cooking rather than doing a weird perch thing on a bar stool. But I've got a big bum so that may also explain that one.

I'll stand down and leave all you leggy lot with your islands Wink

The pink sink looks awful. Where do you keep seeing them?

Do you have one or something? 🤣
StarShapedWindow · 26/08/2020 13:27

I love interior design and have a job that revolves around it. I recently moved into a house with a white 90s bathroom suite. I’m going to rip it out and replace with pale pink and white marble. I would have been horrified a few years back but here we are. Not for everyone I’m absolutely sure but everything goes in a cycle and although I don’t think avocado will come back I think pastel shades with marble, concrete, wood will be on the way back within the next five years. I think dark blue and grey tones might be popular too with lots of foliage. A white bathroom suite will always look fresh and clean and if I was selling my house I’d put one in.

sunglassesonthetable · 26/08/2020 13:32

Do you have one or something? 🤣

Nah. Just chatting really.

You sound super snooty. @Bluntness100

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/08/2020 13:38

So, so defensive of the pink sink... 😂

sunglassesonthetable · 26/08/2020 13:43

@StarShapedWindow
Totally get your drift. It all comes round.

The pink sink looks awful. Where do you keep seeing them?

Mags, Insta, Trade Shows, Press events, Becoming expensive 2nd hand when you once couldn't give them away.

So, so defensive of the pink sink... 😂
😉😉

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2020 13:43

Eh ok, what because I think pink sinks are not fashionable? Colour me snooty then,..🤣

sunglassesonthetable · 26/08/2020 13:53

No not because of that. I don't even think pink sinks are fashionable.
^
Which is why I didn't say it.^

I think you're clever enough to know why. More your manner.

IfNotNow123 · 26/08/2020 13:57

I love coloured bathroom suites! I lived in a 30s house once with the original pale green suite. I would love something like that again. Or possibly lemon..or powder blue.

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2020 14:00

Always good to resort to personal Attacks when you loose the argument..it really bolsters credibility. .🤣🤣🤣

sunglassesonthetable · 26/08/2020 14:08

Not "loosing any argument " @Bluntness100 .

I think you sound snooty. That still stands. "credibility " is not at stake.

🙄

Hotwaterbottlelove · 26/08/2020 14:10

I hate them so much. Always too big for the room they are in. What happened to the kitchen table?

Bluesheep8 · 26/08/2020 14:25

Who let an argument loose? Quick, catch it before it does any damage Grin

sunglassesonthetable · 26/08/2020 14:27

And it's all about....pink sinks.😁

Consideredopinion · 26/08/2020 14:35

@Bluntness100 why all the laughing your head off at everyone 🤔

Bluesheep8 · 26/08/2020 15:59

And it's all about....pink sinks.

Grin Maybe someone will be inspired to put a pink sink in their island because of this thread!!

Goosefoot · 26/08/2020 16:57

@sunglassesonthetable

Don't understand how posters are complaining that an island can hinder the kitchen triangle work flow.

In my set up the island sort reinforces the triangle. With oven opposite ( off set ) the sink and fridge just to the side.

Do some people have the sink and oven on different sides or something?

In places where they have just stuck an island into an already existing kitchen it's a common problem. If you imagine the original kitchen was an L shape mainly along two walls, and included the sink/stove/ on the two sides, an island can interrupt a direct line between them.

If the fridge was on a third side, making the L a U, which is common too, the island will make it even worse.

If the island is small, more like a high work table, it can still work well. But when the trend is for them to be on the massive side, it can really block up the space.

lovelemoncurd · 26/08/2020 17:05

My SIL wanted a big kitchen island because she think she lives in Beverley Hills not Leeds! Anyway it's too big for her little house and looks ridiculous. Everyone has to squeeze around it. It's put me off ever having one. I have a table in the middle of my kitchen.
