To be annoyed with dog groomer?

So, dog was groomed a few days ago.
She came up over a few days after in hundreds of scabby, weeping, bleeding spots.
Went to the vet today who said it's possibly furunculosis, or at the very least it's razor burn that's become infected.
She's got a fever, has barely eaten in 48 hours and is very lethargic and sad.
Spoke to the groomer today who basically said none of it was anything to do with her.
I know that whatever happened wasn't intentional, but she did say that dog was very very wriggly and near on impossible to shave when I collected her, and I noticed that the groom looked awful, bits missed and lines all over her in her coat.
Now she's saying the infection must have been there already and basically denying it could have been caused by the groom despite the vet saying it was.
She said she must have been stung or bitten by something after her groom or it must be hives from an allergic reaction.
Even if she had apologised and said "rarely there are infections caused by grooming" or something along those lines then I wouldn't be so cross.
I've now got a vet bill for £170 for something that was caused by her (I've not mentioned the bill at all to her)
AIBU to be annoyed.
My dog now needs medication for 7 days, painkillers and has to wear a cone and it's like the groomer just wants to insist it wasn't her fault.

NBU she sounds awful.
If it states in the vet report that the groomer caused it claim on her insurance.

poorlittledoggy · 24/08/2020 17:47

She's not even mentioned about insurance, or offered to pay anything, or admitted fault.
Despite me telling her that the vet said it was caused by the groom.

Do you have legal cover on any of your own insurance?
I don't know how it works because poor dog will need ongoing treatment?

poorlittledoggy · 24/08/2020 17:57

We have pet insurance yes, which we are claiming on, but the excess is £100, so we are at least £100 out of pocket. And I've already had to pay the £170 up front before I claim it back.

YANBU to be annoyed, your poor dog in discomfort from her ineptitude! I'd take pictures and leave reviews on Google/Facebook, it's probably all you can do unfortunately.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/08/2020 18:05

I wouldn't bother claiming for that unless it's going to be an ongoing thing. We claimed insurance for a big vet bill but when it came time for the renewal, they wouldn't cover the condition of it occured again, or anything that could be linked to the problem our dog had.
Try and claim through her insurance if the vet is absolutely sure it was the groom that caused the infection. Although vets have a tendency to guess these things.

Are dog groomers regulated or have a professional body? Report to them?
Could her equipment not be properly sterilised or something and it’s dangerous?
Defo look to claim. Poor dog. I hope you either find a better groomer or do it yourself next time so the d dog doesn’t have to go through this again.

Beachbodylonggone · 24/08/2020 18:09

Review her online. Her attitude was disgusting.. She is supposed to be a ddog lover but showed no regard for your ddog's welfare. Potential owners need to know so.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 24/08/2020 18:12

Yes, if Vet report states a result of the grooming, write formally and ask for details of her insurers, and that you expect her to pay for it.

If you don't get anywhere, there is a professional association Dog Groomers Association - but I have no idea whether its compulsory to be registered - look for anything she claims to belong to.

If that fails, go ballistic (factually and politely of course) on social media, review sites, etc.

Hope that your dog recovers soon, poor baby. (take lots of pictures as evidence)

poorlittledoggy · 24/08/2020 18:14

The vet said it can be caused by a few things, like not using shampoo straight away when it's been mixed up, or from too vigorous brushing or shaving.
But either way it was caused by the groom.
We hadn't bathed or brushed her in at least 2 weeks before she was groomed so didn't happen with us.

Was your dog matted?

Leaannb · 24/08/2020 18:37

I hope you never take pup back

Derekhello · 24/08/2020 18:38

Hope your dog is better soon

poorlittledoggy · 24/08/2020 18:43

No she wasn't matted.
She's has a pretty short coat anyway. She's only groomed twice a year and has a puppy clip and bath.
Spring to stay cool and then autumn to keep her from getting too muddy in the winter.
To be honest she would be fine without ever getting groomed, but I like short and tidy.

We had this with our Dog once and the groomer denied all knowledge.

His skin was fine when he went to her but he came back and that afternoon it was like he had a skin condition.

Took to vets and he had to have baths every day for a week with the prescribed bubble bath.

We didn't have a large bill and we voted with our feet (or paws !) and did not go back and did not recommend her. He was groomed every few months so it was her loss.

Plussizejumpsuit · 24/08/2020 18:50

Do other groomers normally have an issue with her wriggling?

TrufflePioneer · 24/08/2020 18:50

This happened to my dog OP, years ago - exactly the same symptoms, exactly the same response from groomer. Although my dog was stripped, not clipped, so we thought she'd been bathed in a shampoo that she reacted to when her pores were open from being stripped.

Groomer was arsey when I politely mentioned that she'd had a reaction, so we never went back. I paid the vet bill and my dog recovered okay. Went to a new groomer who stripped and bathed her twice a year, every year for 8 years and it never happened again.

My old dog died, gawd rest her, and now I take my new puppy to her even though we live 45 mins away! Wouldn't let my dog see anyone else.

poorlittledoggy · 24/08/2020 19:01

She's the only groomer my dog has gone to, from a tiny puppy for the past few years.
I think she's got progressively worse with the wriggling though.
