Flowers that don't last

I'm very aware that this is first world problem and makes me sound very entitled so don't need that reinforcing, thanks!

DP likes to buy me flowers once a month. It's very very sweet of him and I'm always very grateful but...

He insists on using a florist beside where he used to work as he likes to pop in and say hi, but the flowers never last. A week is the absolute longest before they're wilted to dust, and he got me some last Thursday that are just about ready for the bin today, Monday! The bouquets themselves are absolutely beautiful but so fleeting. I was working all weekend out of the house so have had hardly any enjoyment from them.

I've gently brought this up before and he knows, they've told him that it's because they don't have any refrigeration in the shop, he just shrugs it off. (I've also obviously told him that while I love them, he doesn't ever need to buy me flowers. He likes to though and so persists).

AIBU to think that for DP's sake if he's going to spend £25-£40 a month of his hard earned money on cut flowers he should get them from another florist, or the supermarket, from where they always seem to last a good bit longer?

Any suggestions as to how I can bring this up again with out sounding like an ungrateful bint?Hmm

Ask him to ask the florist the likes what day they get their delivery. If it's, say Monday and Friday those will be the best days to buy. If the delivery is Monday and he buys on Thursday you've lost 3/4 days.

Different flowers have different "lifespans". Eg lilies and carnations last ages but peonies and gerberas don't.

Also depends what's in season but the florist will likely not have out of season flowers.

I'd ask for a long lasting bunch but also bear in mind some flowers will fade faster than others (so throw those away and rearrange the rest into a smaller vase).

I've found a small squeeze of Milton into the water makes the world of difference to my flowers. Also I never use the flower food - always makes them open and fade faster.

Both good suggestions, thanks! I can't have lilies (cat in the house) which is a shame as they do always seem to last and smell divine!

He likes to get them on the 20th of each month as it's the date we met, but I'll suggest he asks them what days their deliveries are and adjusts accordingly in future 🙂

Peonies are my favourites so I accept that they are particularly quick to fade, but love them anyway.

Florists'flowers never seem to last as long as supermarket flowers. Any chance of getting him to subscribe to a delivery service? Or does he like the glory of walking in the door with them?
It would be a shame to cramp his style as husbands who buy flowers should be encouraged. Especially if they're nice flowers and not puce chrysanths from the garage!

I'm not sure about the glory @katy1213, he usually brings them home in a big paper bag so he doesn't have to walk through town with them Grin

That's quite sweet!

Lidl flowers usually last weeks!
