To use the same laundry basket for dirty & clean clothes?

Husband thinks it's gross to use the same laundry basket to collect dirty laundry in, and then use the same (empty) basket to bring the clean laundry back upstairs.

I really don't see the issue with this. It's not like I've been rolling in sh!t all day. My clothes aren't that dirty that I would consider them so contaminated that clean laundry couldn't touch the same plastic basket that the dirty stuff was in.

And this has nothing to do with Coronavirus btw. He thinks corona is a croc of sh!t but that's a whole other story 🤦🏼‍♀️

Do you use the same laundry basket for dirty & clean laundry?

I’m a slattern in mumsnet terms but I wouldn’t want to put my clean washing back where my dirty underwear has been. It would feel gross to me. I think we all have our little quirks when it comes to housework/hygiene but if your DH has an issue with it then the simple answer is he can do the laundry!

Cissyandflora · 24/08/2020 06:14

I’m with your husband on this one. I wouldn’t put clean laundry in the dirty laundry basket. It just wouldn’t feel right. The dirty clothes have bacteria and I like fresh to stay fresh. House a mess here otherwise though!

MonaChopsis · 24/08/2020 06:26

I have a seperate laundry 'bin' upstairs for dirty clothes, washing basket only gets used for clean clothes. Mainly to store them in while they wait to be folded and put away Blush

BillywilliamV · 24/08/2020 06:27

It really is time that proper risk assessment became part of the National Curriculum!

seayork2020 · 24/08/2020 06:31

same basket, but then I do the washing (DH does other jobs) if he wants different to this he can do the washing himself

nannieann · 24/08/2020 06:33

I couldn't make one basket work for both clean and dirty washing, from a logistical point of view. I have a three basket system: a linen basket (with lid) for dirty, an open plastic basket for taking washing to and from the line, and a wicker basket for dry washing waiting to be ironed. Reading this thread, I think I've just realised I might have OCD! I also spray and wipe incoming shopping and leave most things three days before using them.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 24/08/2020 06:41

We use a whicker hamper type thing for our laundry and after it's been used and contents laundered, one of the servants burns behind the stable and we order a new one from Fortnum & Mason.

I assumed everyone did this. Feel a bit silly now

Winterwoollies · 24/08/2020 06:46

Does he do the laundry @WineGetsMeThroughIt or just dictate how he’d like it to be done?

eaglejulesk · 24/08/2020 06:48

I only have one basket, and it doesn't matter if there is dirty washing in it, or clean folded washing in it, my cats go in the basket with any kind of clothes in it , clean or not clean.

Yep, this Grin

FippertyGibbett · 24/08/2020 06:53

Yep, same basket.
I’ve never known anyone do it differently.

LightAsTheBreeze · 24/08/2020 07:02

I have a tall lidded plastic basket for my dirty stuff and a washing basket for hanging the clean washing out and bring it in.

MrsHandles · 24/08/2020 07:07

You mean you don’t have separate baskets for each item of clothing? Disgusting!

Lemonylemony · 24/08/2020 07:20

I do enjoy these threads that give us all insights into different ways of thinking about mundane everyday things like this.

I also have mild (diagnosed) OCD but it’s not focused on germs/dirt/cleanliness rather categories/sorting/‘proper’ order. I have 6 laundry boxes - I use an Ikea kallax system - when you take off the clothing item you put it into the correct box (whites/lights, colours/darks, delicates, towels, bedding or dog stuff) and each morning I take the fullest box and wash that one. Never really thought about whether I use the same box to take clean things back again. I think I do for clothing but not towels/bedding/dog stuff. Not sure why!

BillywilliamV · 24/08/2020 07:26

Should I burn DD's bedroom carpet, that is where most of the dirty washing is...
(Trying to get head around her sorting into different baskets...nope, does not compute!!)

BillywilliamV · 24/08/2020 07:27

Sometimes I wash pants and teatowels...IN THE SAME MACHINE!

🤣🤣🤣
petrocellihouse · 24/08/2020 07:53

If this was me, as others have already said, I think I would be giving my husband the gift of doing all the washing and laundry/ironing himself and then he can have as many bloody baskets as he wants!

Lemonylemony · 24/08/2020 07:59

@BillywilliamV

😱 oh my days

Remembered I have a 7th category of laundry - kitchen towels & cleaning cloths - but they have their own ‘laundry’ basket under the sink which gets chucked in the wash when it’s full.

I do envy carefree chucking towels in with pants. What larks!

Blueberryblueberry · 24/08/2020 08:11

Laundry is one of those jobs that everybody does differently. I was so surprised (when in response to a Mumsnet thread) I counted my laundry baskets - I thought I had two (a hamper for dirty laundry and a basket for carrying things to/from hamper to machine and from machine to washing line/clothes horse etc). There are actually loads more for putting washing away etc, and things that need a "special" wash (e.g without softener). The hamper only ever has dirty stuff in but the basket is used for carrying things has clean and dirty.... I thought everyone did that?? I also lob tea towels and dish cloths in with random washes though Grin

StCharlotte · 24/08/2020 08:14

I have three baskets (stems from my B&B days probably).

One main lidded basket for dirty washing next to the washing machine. One for transporting to/from line/upstairs and one full of DH's old socks which he needs to sort at some point and a load of coathangers. It's a coincidence that there are separate clean and dirty baskets.

I recently bought one for the bedroom. The actual basket was lovely but not very practical so I gave it away. We bring down any dirty washing every morning anyway.

opinionatedfreak · 24/08/2020 08:15

I have a laundry hamper for dirty clothes.

I then use the same basket (actually a plastic storage box) to move the dirty clothes to the machine as I do to put the clean clothes in while I hang them out.

I thought this was normal! Obviously not.

chipsandpeas · 24/08/2020 08:17

i have 1 basket for dirty and clean clothes

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/08/2020 08:17

I don't even have washing basket. Lidded bin thing lives next to machine. Everyone brings their dirty washing down each day and puts it in there. When we eventually get new kitchen it will have it's own special cupboard.

Not there, not my problem. Yes DD1 that item you are looking for might be dirty or clean somewhere in your room.

Things get folded as soon as dry and taken upstairs. I iron nothing and only put mine and the toddlers clothes away.

WhiteVixen · 24/08/2020 08:19

I’d be telling him he can do his own laundry from now on. Absolutely nothing wrong with using the same basket, what a delight he sounds.

Does he yell at you over anything else? Seems like he likes making your life more difficult for no reason.

Petportraits · 24/08/2020 08:31

Yuk! Use separate baskets - you what your dishtowels to be lying where your dirty pants have been? Please tell me you do t use the same cloth to clean toilet then wipe kitchen counter tops with? I’m with your husband!
