To ask about hirsutism?

I've become increasingly hairy over the last four/five years to the extent that I now have some on my lower abdominal area, chin stubble (I have to use a razor on my face, which makes me feel horrible!) and hairy arms and hobbit-like hairy feet.

Four/five years ago I was concerned that I had some late-onset acne (which has now stopped) and was starting to get some extra hair so I had a blood test at that time, which didn't indicate PCOS.

I'm now wondering what this is? Can it occur with premature ovarian failure (I'm early 30s but have an irregular cycle and some other symptoms of perimenopause) or could I have PCOS but have somehow had normal blood hormone levels four/five years ago?

Also what is the best at-home hair removal treatment as shaving my face makes me feel like a man and I'd love to stop!

Sorry , I can’t really help, but I have PCOS and shaving is my norm.
It sucks but creams don’t help . I had laser work a while ago but that didn’t help at all.
It’s miserable.

I could have written this.
I'm having laser next month. I have the Phillips at home one, but it doesn't delay the growth for long on my face. I keep getting ingrown hairs that look like dots on my top lips.
Hair has grown longer, thicker and darker down my thighs, lower back, abdomen and most pleasantly, my ass crack and nipples.
My periods are extremely heavy, vary in length and painful. To the point peeing hurts.

Ive had PCOS tests three times in 8 years, nothing shows up! I was borderline underactive thyroid and they gave me medication for that, periods aren't so bad but hair growth still bad - but better on my head!

Hell knows. I considered early menopause also, but now I'm on the thryoid medication some of those symptoms have now gone.

It will be hormonal. Get them checked. Private labs would send you a kit which you post back.
Laser is the long term solution as pp said.
Threading or waxing chin hair, lightening arm hair might work?

I have been dealing with something similar over the past couple of months.

What should I say to my GP for blood tests? I don’t want them to brush me off!

Dita73 · 24/08/2020 02:24

Hi. I have PCOS but it never showed up in blood tests. It was only found when I had a scan. Definitely ask for one

Yeahnahmum · 24/08/2020 14:39

I am the hairiest person on the world. My face i get threaded as for me it hurts less then waxing. Plus no one wants a stubble face like you do after shaving.

You can also get laser treatment i guess when it persists. God i have to dehair-a-fy everywhere allll the time. I swear i am part gorilla.

I have PCOS and hirsutism, I needed an internal ultrasound to spot it.

I've also stuck with shaving as laser just doesn't seem to work for me, and can't race letting my facial hair grow long enough for waxing.

I sympathise massively though. For me it's a horrendous daily burden and I've yet to find any kind of long term solution

MizMoonshine · 24/08/2020 15:24

PCOS and hirsutism here.
I have: hairy upper lip, hairy chin, sideburns, hairy neck, hairy chest, hairy back, hands and feet, and, my biggest irritation: an exceptionally hairy arse. Seriously. My butt cheeks look like a god damn welcome mat.
It took me ages to get diagnosed with PCOS. They told me my bloods were only borderline but I pushed for the internal anyway and low and behold my ovaries are all good and cysty.
Ask for a scan.

Thanks everyone - it's such a pain getting rid of it every day. I can cope with the leg and stomach hair but I'm finding the face stubble the worst!

I will ask if I can be have my hormone levels checked again but probably push for a scan anyway. My maternal cousin has PCOS despite being very slim so it's definitely possible.
