to tell headmistress a child in DD's class possibly has head lice

Just bathed DD and did the tea tree conditioner and comb through and guess what? Yep, she got lice again 5 of them. Used the nitty gritty but not sure if I got all the eggs out.

Since DD started school 1 year ago she has lice almost constantly. I asked her if she noticed any of the kids scratching their heads a lot and she said the girl she plays with is always scratching.

I obviously don't know if this child has head lice or not but AIBU to inform the headmistress? Not sure what she can/will do about it though as head lice in DD's school is an every day occurance.

I am getting sick of this. DD has a bath one day shower the next- on the days she has a bath I use the nitty gritty - can't understand why she is getting lice all the time .

I don't think you should single a particular child out, but you could ask the head if they could increase the effort against headlice.

Is there a school rule for hair to be tied back? This can be a highly effective route at combatting headlice in schools.

You can ask if they need to be notified of an infestation. If they say yes you tell them that YOUR child has head lice.

xXxamyxXx · 04/10/2007 18:57

in my school days every now and again we got all got sent home with letters to say there was an outbreak of lice and could parents check there childrens heads maybe you could ask if they could do something like that

bookwormmum · 04/10/2007 19:04

Bring back Nitty Nora. Trouble is the schools are only allowed to send out generic letters so everyone is blamed in the nicest kind of way instead of it being targetted at the real cause. It's not the child's fault though.

xXxamyxXx · 04/10/2007 19:06

yes but it might wake someones parent up that didnt have a clue their child had it

My daughter has lice constantly too. I comb her head through every other day like yourself. It's a never ending battle. I'll get her clear when half term and holidays roll round, but she'd got a head-full again as soon as she's been back at school for two days.

Alert the class teacher first, although to be honest there's absolutely nothing they can do The nursery my daughter went to used to have a pot full of free lice combs for parents to grab when the infestations were major, might be worth looking into something like that?

Best of luck, and if you find a way of repelling them that works (have tried everything it seems like) let us know

At our school if someone reports that their child has headlice then the children in their class will bring home a note informing the parents.

DD had head lice once in nursery, after which I started spraying her hair with Chinese Whispers repellent every day (I know how that sounds....). Haven't had another sign for five years, though the children all around her seem to get them quite regularly. I also tie her hair back in plaits, but I do think the Chinese Whispers actually works. (No connection - all the usual disclaimers, etc)

I add tea tree oil to a pot of ordinary detangling spray and spray the kids hair every morning with it. No nits at all so far this term (and we've had 4 letters home about other kids in the class having them).

bookwormmum · 05/10/2007 11:29

What's Chinese Whispers?

AliciaMum · 05/10/2007 11:49

whats chinese whispers?

I think the Chinese Whispers means one person suggesting to another that child X might have head lice and it being passed on. (You're probably not allowed to say CW anymore are you...)

pageturner · 05/10/2007 11:58

the message being passed on, not the lice! (though probably them too!)

RustyBear · 05/10/2007 13:16

Chinese whispers

bookwormmum · 05/10/2007 14:31

I'll buy a lorry load .

Ignore me, I'm a halfwit who can't read!

They sell something similar in Sainsburys for about £4.99 - a Tea Tree detangling lotion in a pump bottle with a purple label and a cartoon of an octopus on it. I bought it after dd's first infestation at nursery, she's never had one since
