To worry about a sore throat or not - covid.

I've had a dry, mildly sore throat for a few days. More annoying than anything. It was that dry it made me cough only a couple times a few nights ago but not coughed since. No fever and generally feel okay! Am a little tired but it's the summer holidays and we've been non stop.

Aibu to not be worried? I know sore throat isn't one of the main 3 symptoms but I have read that sore throat was experienced with covid by some people but would it be on its own or accompanied by the main symptoms? My temp is 36.4 so fine.

I have major anxiety about covid (can you tell 🤣).

Sore throats aren't new for me. I generally suffer on and off all winter due to dry air but been okay all summer!

Can acid reflux cause sore throat? I've been suffering pretty bad from it for a few weeks! 😬

I think if you don't have a fever then it's probably not covid.
My son had a sore throat which turned into an infection
, When I was finally able to get the GP to see him he was given antibiotics.
If it's available in your town try and get tested to put your mind at ease. We weren't able to as he didn't have a temperature
Gargle with hot salty water, this always works. And add some honey to your tea/ coffee

Acid reflux can definitely cause a sore throat! As can having a fan on in your bedroom, hay fever or an allergy.

Treat the symptoms today and see if anything else transpires. I have every sympathy - I’ve got a really stingy sore throat today from horrendous reflux in the night.

cardibach · 23/08/2020 11:09

Given how many cases are asymptomatic or have very minor symptoms I’d get a test. It’s not ‘to put your mind at rest’ as Sh05 says but because if you do have it you need to isolate to prevent spreading it! No need for anxiety though - if it is COVID it would appear it’s only going to be a mild case.

My friend had a sore throat for 5 weeks with covid (confirmed), no cough, temperature or loss of taste/smell. Fatigue was her only other symptom.

Lordamighty · 23/08/2020 11:18

Why not get tested & put you fears to rest? They are freely available now & you would be doing everyone around you a favour by having the test.

starlet14 · 23/08/2020 11:32

I know little about testing? Aren't you only entitled to a test if you have a fever, cough or loss of taste and smell? (I have none of these)?

Sore throat isn't all that unusual for me! I usually get it throughout the winter, when I'm run down and as it seems with acid reflux! I will keep an eye on my temperature and stay in for a couple days to see if it progresses into anything!

Thanks all

I've had a sore throat a couple of times since the Covid situation started, but each time it lasted a few days and then went away by itself. I'm anxious about Covid too, but for some reason this didn't worry me - I think because it isn't one of the main symptoms! Obviously I can't say whether you have it or not, but I really wouldn't worry too much. I hope you feel better soon!

BrokenBrit · 23/08/2020 12:03

My friend was diagnosed with covid with just a sore throat, and I have also suggested covid as a possibility on threads on here where the OP has just had a sore throat and they have gone on to get diagnosed too.
So yes definitely a possibility.

mummymeister · 23/08/2020 12:11

reflux most definately causes sore throats and runny noses etc. you shouldnt just leave it if you do suffer with reflux - i did and now have 2 ulcers and a hernia. if you thnk its covid then go get a test but realistically no one can get tested every time they have a sniffle so work out if you think its possible with other symptoms etc. there will always be exceptions but generally a sore throat isnt a cause for too much concern.

dontdisturbmenow · 23/08/2020 12:21

A colleague of mine had adore throat and no other symotoms at all. She tested positive.

I had a very sore throat, a bit of low temperature, chest and back pains and breathlessness, that got better and then hit me again. My GP said it was most likely covid. Tested weeks later for antibodies, negative.

Even if that’s true - I don’t think it is anymore - how can anyone prove you haven’t lost your sense of smell? Just get the test.
99victoria · 23/08/2020 12:55

I've had a sore throat several times since March, sometimes accompanied by chest tightness and sinus pain. No cough or temperature. I haven't bothered to get a test either as i haven't had any of the main symptoms and its usually gone away by itself after 3 or 4 days.

I'm not a hayfever sufferer but have put it down to the fact that I've been walking much more regularly and for longer in woodland/forest areas.

ChristmasFluff · 23/08/2020 12:58

I agree with cardibach - the 'three main symptoms' become a self-fulfilling prophecy if people only get tested if they have one. At work we are tested if we have any symptoms of illness at all.

Tick the 'no sense of smell' box on the website and they will send you a test. Not to put your mind at rest, but to prevent you going out spreading it if it does get better in a few days, but is still COVID.

EnidPrunehat · 23/08/2020 13:02

I’d get tested. There are so many more symptoms that can present in addition to the very limited ‘official’ list. I’m contributing to the ZOE/UCL COVID Symptom Study system and if you report any symptoms that have been associated with COVID-19 you are encouraged to get a test.
