Moving house whilst on UC?

Hello, bit of a hard one and upsetting situation.

My partner and I were looking to move in together but covid hit and he was made redundant and I was made to take maternity leave early so we didn’t hit the savings we wanted and then spent it all during lockdown. We now have a baby

I live with my mum but my partner isn’t allowed to stay and it’s become increasingly hard being here. Baby is keeping her up from her work in nhs. We argue and I feel like a single parent and it’s hurting my partner. I’m on the council list but it could take years.

I didn’t intend to have a baby with no money, the pill failed and I don’t believe in abortion personally and being 23 with endometriosis I thought it could never happen so not going to miss my chance.

If I get a guarantor will universal credit pay the rent until my partner gets a job to cover it?

I know it’s a sore subject for some so don’t need more criticism than I’ve already put myself through. Thanks

Why don't you call your local council or CAB and ask. Lots of supermarkets hiring near me, worth checking near you.

Depends if the landlord wants a guarantor.
You can request an apa so they get the rent direct before you get what's left

You need to check your lha to see how much of the rent uc would pay

Rainbowsoup · 22/08/2020 22:26

The straight answer is yes- but unlikely to be the whole amount. Finding a home that accepts a guarantor can also be quite tricky- most estate agents would also require credit checks and financial checks to see if you can afford rent with your monthly income. You’re best option would be to look for a private rental not through an estate agent. You also do not have to inform them you are on universal credit. Google ‘local housing allowance’ that will show how much rent universal credit will cover in your area. Entitled to is also a good website to check. Good luck

@ILoveFood87 I’m 3 months postpartum exclusively breastfeeding (she refuses the bottle) so I can’t leave her. He’s looking but our local one is letting people go unfortunately

They will help with your rent but you will be expected to pay the deposit and fees which can be expensive. Most landlords want a guarantor too. I’d ring your local council and cab and see what they suggest. If you’re overcrowded or at risk of being made homeless it will speed up your housing application, but if not it will be worth going for a rental to have your own space.

What’s your partner doing? Got his own place? Can you move in? If he’s living with parents is he not saving for you both?

Delizhop · 22/08/2020 23:57

@Ishihtzuknot the guarantor we have it’s the other fees but wasn’t sure if places would accept it. I’ll give my local council a call!

@TheEC he is living with parents. Was made redundant and struggling to find a job. Most savings has gone on me and baby and the fact his parents were put on furlough he helped them with money so savings have pretty much gone unfortunately
