Help! Problem after rhinoplasty

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 18:33

Apologies for posting for traffic, these problems always happen to me on a weekend!

Just looking for opinions/advice!
So I had a revision rhinoplasty last week. I had my first when I was younger and got it revised due to problems breathing ect. Everything has been fine so far, had cast and stitches removed yesterday evening (all great). But when I got home I realise the tip had gone grey/blue. I decided to leave overnight and all day it has been yellow.. anybody know if this is normal or something to be concerned about? I can’t get in touch with my surgeon until Monday.. Apologies for the gross pictures.

It looks like a bruise which is surely part of the healing process? Contact your consultant if you’re worried

Shieldingending · 22/08/2020 18:47

I think it looks like bruising, obviously check with your consultant when you are able to but it’s a brutal procedure- you are bound to have bruises coming out

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 18:48

That’s what I’m hoping but all of the bruising from the op has subsided now and this came up out of nowhere yesterday, worried incase its a problem with cut off blood circulation or something Sad

Did they provide you with after care instructions? If not, arnica should be safe to use

hastingsmua1 · 22/08/2020 18:50

In my opinion cut off blood circulation isn’t likely. As it would have present on the same day you had the operation - not a week later, you’d be hospitalised by now.

BashfulClam · 22/08/2020 18:51

Typical of bruising, goes to yellow/green as it subsides. Is there a loss of feeling?

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 18:54

That’s what I was thinking Hastings, I should mention it was a difficult procedure apparently there was excessive damage and scar tissue from previous surgery years ago, he was worried about blood being cut off at the tip because of thin skin but surely this would happen straight after op if it was going to? The whole area with the discolouration is completely numb also. If it was a blood supply problem what colour would it be likely to go? Wish I’d never got surgery in the first place but had huge self esteem issues when I was younger, and being naive thought surgery would be a quick fix

It'd be cold if there was a problem with circulation.

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 18:55

Yes totally numb bashful, it’s strange because I thought the different colours of bruising would last longer.. The ones around my eyes were blue/red then took about a week to turn green/yellow

Doesn’t your consultant have an emergency contact line?

If you really can’t get in touch with them and if you’re really concerned, perhaps call 111 and see if they think it’s worth you seeing a doctor or presenting at A&E. I do personally think it’s just a bruise though.

I’m not a dr but I assume if it was a blood circulation issue it would go black as the tissue begins to die

PoppySeedSaid · 22/08/2020 18:59

Call your consultant. This is obviously a concern and your consultant should be the person to put your mind at ease not MN.

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 19:01

Thank you so much for all the replies, it’s slightly cold to touch but not massively. Is there anything specific I should look out for if it is cut off supply? I wasn’t given an emergency contact number and I’ve tried his secretary but she doesn’t work on the weekends, tried the hospital but no answer after 5pm weekdays. I will call 111 in the morning if there’s no change/gets worse

hastingsmua1 · 22/08/2020 19:04

Have you checked their website for of out of hours contact information?

You don’t have to wait until the morning to call 111. If you’re concerned now, call now. They should still be able to book you in with an out of hours doctor, or you can be seen at A&E today. Alternatively use 111.nhs.uk/

NanaRant · 22/08/2020 19:09

arnica will sort out any risidual bruising

CharismaticVic · 22/08/2020 19:34

I would say it is bruising.

What prompted you to have a revision if you don't mind me asking? I had rhinoplasty in 2014 and wasn't happy with the result - there was a dent in my nostril that filler wouldn't fix. The surgery wouldn't do a revision for free and so I just have to walk around with it. Shame as I thought it was going to be a positive experience.

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 19:56

Sorry to hear that, Charismatic. It’s such a shame when it doesn’t turn out as expected. For my first surgery the appearance was good initially but I couldn’t breathe through it whatsoever and had constant pain on the left side. After a few months it looked worse than my old nose. The people I went with wanted me to pay all over again to correct it also. It’s took years to be able to get this revision so I’m really hoping there won’t be serious complications Sad. Did you go with a company or an independent surgeon if you don’t mind me asking?

Fingers crossed for you @silvermockingbird yeah it's just something I've learnt to live with. I've had 2 kids since, put loads of weight on and a few very sad family things so I only think about it every so often.

Big hugs to you. Xx

CharismaticVic · 22/08/2020 20:12

Sorry, I went with a private surgery but one that's not part of a chain xx

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 20:21

Beauty comes from within! Sorry to hear that.. it’s such a shame surgery is so readily available and seems like a great idea yet so many people end up with even worse problems.

OP posts:
mineofuselessinformation · 22/08/2020 20:25

It's probably deep bruising coming to the surface. Lack of blood supply would mean the skin would be white, then turning black if it was dying.
As this is not happening, I don't think you need to panic, but a call to the surgeon would be a good idea to set your mind at rest.

Silvermockingbird · 22/08/2020 20:27

I see, how long would it usually take to turn black if it was? It’s been this colour all day and no change- is that reassuring?

I’ve had two rhinoplasty operations myself. It’s just bruising. You can expect bruising for a long time. It takes a year for the swelling to completely go down. You’ll be fine. It looks great! Much better than mine!
