To ask how to stop bloody snacking !

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 17:01

I need to shift a stone or so (maybe closer to 2!) . I know how many calories I should be having, I know to shift my arse more and all of that. I’ve got my meals sorted , lots of veg etc but snacking is still an issue.
I try healthy ones such as those Ryvita cracker breads but I end up having 10 which amounts to about the same as if I’d just had a Kit Kat anyway!
I think I need to lose the snacks altogether. Those of you who never snack, how do you manage it? If you’re hungry and it’s 4pm and you’re eating at 6, do you just wait it out?

Pretty much. Being a bit hungry won’t kill you and you’ll enjoy your meal more. I don’t snack at home and after a while of doing this I sort of forgot it’s an option if that makes sense? I don’t feel deprived. If I’m really hungry, I might have my meal earlier but in general, I don’t get hungry between meals.

Suzi888 · 22/08/2020 17:35

Don’t buy the snacks in the first place. I find that’s the only way!

Oryxx · 22/08/2020 17:35

And I never eat after my evening meal. I have my dinner (sometimes with pudding) but that’s it until breakfast the next day.

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 17:39

@Oryxx absolutely right, hunger won’t kill me ! This is all as an adult , I never snacked as a child , I was brought up to wait for teatime or whatever. I think there is just so much stuff available and so many ‘snacks’ that you can easily consume another meals worth of calories in a day just in snacks.

I've recently come to this conclusion. I just have zero will power to only have one xyz. So I have embraced "hunger comes in waves, it doesn't build and build, and it is normal and healthy to experience anticipation before a meal...I won't die." And so I just find it easier to not eat at all between meals because then I don't have to stop myself!

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 17:42

@WillowySnicket 100% what I’m going to have to do! I cannot be trusted. Nice to know there’s someone else out there who can’t just one have the one biscuit either 😃

I have a Cadbury’s highlights hot chocolate to try and stave off snack cravings.

Londonmummy66 · 22/08/2020 17:43

Trying brushing your teeth - often works - I do OMAD so the hunger pains can be a bit annoying by hour 22...

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 17:44

@Jeezoh now that’s an idea ! Quite hard to binge on hot choc too so after the one mug I imagine you feel satisfied. May give this a go with Options , they seem to have nice flavours.

If it's not in the house, you can't snack on it.

I also do the Hugh Jackman thing of onlyeating between certain hours, which has helped curb my appetite. I eat much later in the day, and it saves me heaps of calories. Snacks at first were apple slices, bags of crisps salad etc, but now my stomach has shrunk and my appetite reduced I don;t even snack.

redbigbananafeet · 22/08/2020 17:46

@Passthecake30

I have a small handful of bits (about 10) at around 4pm when I feel too starved to last until dinner. It really helps.
Do you mean nuts? Peanuts?
Passthecake30 · 22/08/2020 17:47

@Floridabadger sorry that was meant to say nuts Blush. I have a tub of mixed non-salted nuts and count myself out 10. The protein stops the munchies (usually!).

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 17:47

@redbigbananafeet handful of Jammie Dodgers?

OP posts:
monkeyonthetable · 22/08/2020 17:47

Lots of cups of tea. Try cutting sugar and wheat from your diet as they trigger carb cravings. I find if I don't eat them, I don't crave them. If I start the day with Greek yoghurt and berries I feel fine. If I start with toast and jam - twice the calories but I'm ravenous again by 10am.

wowfudge · 22/08/2020 17:50

Just don't buy stuff you'll want to eat mindlessly. Don't have it in the house. It's much easier than challenging yourself not to eat what is there. Take up knitting, crochet or embroidery so your hands are occupied.

Eat enough protein at every meal - it takes longer for the body to process so fills you up.

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 17:52

@monkeyonthetable good point about breakfast, start the day as you mean to go on !

Kate Moss was slated when she said nothing tastes as good as skinny feels but she wasn't far off the truth. How long does the pleasure of that mini roll last? It's fleeting isn't it. You weren't hungry so it served no purpose. It was pointless. You won't be walking around the shops three days later thinking 'Ooh, that mini roll I had on Friday night was delicious'. Let's face it, you won't be thinking that three minutes later. The pleasure of being your target size and the health benefits that accompany it will last a lot longer and as you walk round the shops, you'll be thinking 'Ooh, this size (insert target here) fits me!'

Indecisivelurcher · 22/08/2020 17:53

@floridabadger 16:8 means you have an 8 hour window for food then 16hrs fast overnight. So my window is 10-6, effectively I delay my breakfast until about 10 then don't eat again after dinner at 5:30. Personally i find it easy to do and reduces smacking because breakfast is budged up to snack time! But your 8hrs could be whenever you want it to be.

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 17:56

@ViciousJackdaw that made me laugh about the mini roll! And you’re absolutely right. I think I need to remember that. No more mini rolls !!

Both hands?

Mintjulia · 22/08/2020 18:02

I take an apple and a glass of waterfrom the kitchen and then I go do something physical like a bike ride or (today) been pruning a hedge. I promise myself I'll have dinner when it's done.

And if I get the snackies while I'm cooking, I have a handful of hazel nuts and raisins.

Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 18:03

@redbigbananafeet you need one hand free to separate the two halves I find, crumbs everywhere otherwise !

OP posts:
Floridabadger · 22/08/2020 18:05

@Mintjulia water does seem to be the popular solution to snacking! I may get one of those bottles with hours of the day on as a target

OP posts:
MintyMabel · 22/08/2020 18:05

Replace it with a cup of tea.

Noooo, that needs biscuits.

More protein, fewer carbs, and don’t worry about being hungry for an hour or two before dinner. That’s normal.

If I’m hungry at 4pm and dinner is at 6, I will be physically shaking with hunger by the time it is served.

MintyMabel · 22/08/2020 18:07

Let's face it, you won't be thinking that three minutes later.

Oh I definitely am, it is usually followed by “I should have another”

They are only mini, after all.
