Laser eye surgery

using aibu for traffic. Concede im unreasonable on that point alone. My question is for anyone who has had laser eye surgery. Basically what was your prescription strength, how much were you for it and how long ago? Really tempted as heading for 40 and sick to death of contacts. Seen an ad for laser eye surgery from £19 a month which is less than I am for contacts, but wondered what the realistic price is rather than the headline price.

It cost several thousand for my son with about -2 last year and so £19 a month would be years?

Polnm · 22/08/2020 16:00

He went to optegra

Optegra eye surgery prices range between £1,795 and £3,495 per eye, depending on the type of surgery you require, the lens you choose, and the experience of the surgeon. The initial consultation is free, as with many eye clinics

I went to david Gartry at moorfields which was more

I had it about 18 years ago. Was -2 or thereabouts. Great success and only now in my mid 50s do I need reading glasses (not essential but helpful).

Several of my friends and family followed suit, most seem to need glasses of some sort now in middle age.

I love a bargain but not for my precious eyes. I also went to Moorfields and got the best. I went for a consultation at a high street clinic just for some background research and wasn’t seen by a HCP just a salesperson. I paid 3k and it was well spent.

LivePositively · 22/08/2020 18:26

Had mine done about 10 years ago with optical express, best money I've ever spent. Think I paid just over £2,000 and my prescription was -3 and -3.5 I believe.

lovelylovelove · 22/08/2020 18:27

I've had it 5 years ago.
I was -4.75 and -5.25

I used the David Gantry clinic in London. It is based at Moorfields eye hospital.
Seriously the best thing I've ever done.

pinkstinks · 22/08/2020 18:31

Had it last year.
-8 and -7.5
Perfect vision now..
It was around 3k I think and if paid off over two years would be interest free so I pay £121 a month.
It was horrendous at the time but now it’s so amazing.
The first tine I went swimming and could put my head underwater and see was very emotional :)

BellsaRinging · 22/08/2020 18:32

I was minus 3.75 and had it four years ago now. Honestly life changingly good. I paid around 2.5k. I was 40 when I had it and think i wont make it back in what i would have paid in glasses and contact lenses but i dont care...the freedom! Amazing to be able to get up without worrying where my glasees are, and do sports, and goto bed drunk without taking lenses out!

pinkstinks · 22/08/2020 18:33

Oh I went with Optical express and had astigmatism.

Lochroy · 22/08/2020 18:34

-6.5 and -7.5 plus astigmatism in both eyes.
£3,000 six years ago.
Think I worked out it would equate to the cost of lenses, check ups, new specs (worn occasionally) and so on after about ten years.
100% worth it.

moleeye · 22/08/2020 18:35

Treated myself for my 30th 10 years ago, -3.75 and -5.25

Best thing I've ever done, without a doubt

moleeye · 22/08/2020 18:36

Oh and I went with Optimax in Finchley Road London, paid about 2k

Gindrinker43 · 22/08/2020 18:36

There is a good reason why, if you asked an Ophthalmologist for a recomendation for a good clinic, they wont reccomend any. Dont do it, there can be future comsequences for your vision.

glasgow357 · 22/08/2020 18:43

Got mine done 11 years ago. Best two grand I've ever spent.

MrsWooster · 22/08/2020 18:47

Cost about 3k 12 years ago. I was very shortsighted and astigmatic. It was briefly painful but brilliant-tho, at 53, I now have to wear reading glasses but my distance vision is fine despite some remaining astigmatism. Not having glasses or lenses, esp for sport, is life changing.

emsyj37 · 22/08/2020 18:48

I had mine done this week! Grin I'm 41 and was not able to tolerate contact lenses any more.
My prescription was -6.00 and -6.50 and I had astigmatism.. Better than 20/20 now, cost £4890 with a discount voucher for £300.

WineIsMyMainVice · 22/08/2020 18:54

I had mine done 12 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did! I’d just been made redundant so had some cash and just went for it.
The one bit of advice I’d say is research, research, research! There are some good places and some not so good, so look at their results carefully. Don’t go for the cheapest when you’re messing around with something so important as your sight!
My prescription was -7.5 in both eyes, so pretty bad. But they got me back to 20/20 and I’ve had 12 great years specs/lenses free! (They told me I’d have 10).
I just went back to the opticians yesterday to book an appointment as I’ve recently been struggling to see long distances. But if that appointment I’m told I’ll have to wear glasses again I’ll be looking at whether anything laser wise can be done.
Good luck OP!

Ohhiiii · 22/08/2020 18:55

14 years ago with optical express, was either £2200 or £2500, can't remember now. Prescription was -2.75 and -3.25, not needed glasses since 😊

lookatmememe · 22/08/2020 18:56

I was going to get it done, but I'm a chicken. Wear 30 day and night contacts instead. So only take lenses out on first of the month to put a new set in.
Works for me and is so much cheaper ( but to be fair the money wasn't an issue, it really is because I'm squeamish )

Happycow · 22/08/2020 19:03

-2.75 and -3.25 with astigmatism in boh eyes. Spent £4.5k (interest free credit for 2 yrs) at Centre for Sight. V v close to moorfields in terms of expertise and more local to me.

Worth every penny and then some. Tried to weigh it up against contacts / glasses for x years.... but there are a LOAD more benefits that i hadnt even considered important before. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it. Just so your homework before and dont go cheap!!

bimbimbap · 22/08/2020 19:07

i had lasik maybe 10 years ago, then a free lasek adjustment (think i’ve got that the right way round!) a few years later as my eyes had started to regress. both were with optical express and the recovery was a lot worse second time. i still get moments of ‘wow i can see so clearly!’ moments years later.

bimbimbap · 22/08/2020 19:08

oops prescription was -2.25 in one eye and -3.75 in the other. i can’t remember what it had regressed to, and i did have to get an independent opinion to ‘prove’ it needed redone afterwards under their guarantee.

Lotts123 · 22/08/2020 19:13

I think mine were -2.5 and -2, I had them lasered with Optical Express 7 years ago. Had 20/20 vision after and still do now. There are lots of possible side effects - the only one I have experienced is a sensitivity to lights at night. Took me ages after having them done to realise everyone wasn’t driving around with their full beam on!

awaynboilyurheid · 22/08/2020 19:13

Twenty years ago, was one of the first i knew to get it done it was in the days when you could only get one eye done at a time and had to lie in a darkened room at home for a day!
Optimax carried it out and I have never regretted it, have not worn glasses since it’s been wonderful! As others said do your research but wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it , and would do it again if I had to.

TamzinGrey · 22/08/2020 19:36

It was experimental then and I had it done at St.Thomas Hospital in London. I volunteered to be a guinea pig so didn't pay a penny. -3.5 left eye -2 right.

Looking back now I'm horrified that I took such a risk, but that's the craziness of youth for you.

Turned out to be a great decision as I've had good eyesight ever since, although I do need reading glasses now, but I was warned about that at the time.

Go for it I'd say - the science will have improved massively since I had mine done and I've never regretted it.
