I love taking my children on days out. Everything about it, packing a lunch and a bag, the travelling and the day itself. We live in the North but travel frequently around the UK. I'm making a days out jar for when this pandemic is over....so my question is -

What are of the uk do you live and what are your top 3 days out?

What age children?

SospanFrangipan · 20/08/2020 23:00

We're in North Wales, our trip 3 are:

  1. Manchester Airport Viewing Park. On a nice day we take a picnic and sit there for hours watching the planes come and go.
  2. Knowsley Safari Park.
  3. Cosford Air Museum. About 1.5 hour drive away but well worth it. It's free entry, just a small amount to pay for parking.

Our DS is plane obsessed, hence the aviation days out 😁

We are in London. My kids are 10 and 12 now but favourites over the years have been
Borough Market
London Fields Lido
Regents Canal walk and Victoria Park
Museum of London
Chinatown

I'm in Surrey, a place where we're regularly told on Mumsnet is soulless, has nothing there, full of money grabbing types etc. So I won't recommend anything round here because MN tells us there's nothing round here.

FlyingFlamingo · 21/08/2020 06:48

South Wales:

Lunch from Cafe Mor at Freshwater West followed by a beach trip to Broadhaven South / Barafundle

Lunch from Pizza Tipi followed by canoeing on the Teifi

Three Cliffs beach at high tide to play in the river

North Wales:

Llyn Padarn for swimming and watersports

Beddgelert for ice cream and a walk along the river

Zipworld Fforest for the Treetop nets

As you can see we like food and water Grin

Kent:
Wingham Wildlife Park in Kent
Aquarium either London or Brighton
Tilgate Park in Crawley
Groomsbridge Place - Enchanted Forest in Kent

I live in South Wales, but took DD to Woodley Hole last year. Awesome day out, so much to do.

Margam Park is a good day out in South Wales, Rhossili Bay and the sunflower field, Cardiff Bay has loads of restaurants, boat trips, a few funfair rides etc. Usually there's also an urban beach. Barry Island for a traditional day at the seaside.

devildeepbluesea · 21/08/2020 06:53

Grr autocorrect. Wookey Hole.

84wood · 21/08/2020 08:09

Surrey

In the northeast, some of our favourite days out have been:
Beamish anytime of year, Christmas is magical there.
Asygarth falls, pack a picnic we enjoy a walk and then the kids enjoy playing in the river.
Thomasland mine are a bit old for this now but when they were little they loved a trip to Thomasland. We used to put them in the car in their pjs, stop at a services for breakfast and they would get changed. Enjoy a day in Thomasland and then stay over in a premier inn.

cultkid · 21/08/2020 08:24

The best day out I ever had was at longleat with my son when he was about 2.5

But I love going berry picking
Or the woods with a belter of a picnic

EatDessertFirst · 21/08/2020 08:43

Kent:

Bewl Water (13 mile Walk)
Greenwich Park
Train direct to London for any museums (not this year due to Covid)
Howletts (once a year $$$)

We've done A LOT of country parks over the last five weeks. Most of them have parking for the day under a fiver. DC are 9 & 11 and are outdoorsy so I'm quite lucky really.

ZaraW · 21/08/2020 10:13

I lived in Derbyshire.

We would go to Matlock Bath/Matlock. Visit Heights of Abraham, fish and chips and just wander around.

Ashbourne shrovetide football when DS was older and walks in The Peak District.

Issantagettingbusy · 21/08/2020 10:16

Up North also...
York maze
Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Adult dc usually tag along!

RonObvious · 21/08/2020 10:19

Flamingoland is still going?? I remember going there back in the 80s - used to love it.

Issantagettingbusy · 21/08/2020 10:22

Ishihtzuknot · 21/08/2020 10:31

We’re in London, we travel for day trips a lot too. Our favourites are wildwood animal park, London zoo, port lympne, paradise park, natural history museum and Greenwich Park which is walking distance to us.
Well worth visiting paultons Park, chessington zoo, Howletts zoo, wing ham park and Drusiilas if you’re ever in and around Kent

WutheringTights · 21/08/2020 10:42

Chester Zoo, Warwick Castle, Formy beach, Big Pit Mining Museum (mine are a bit young for this at the mo, but I plan to take them when they're a bit older).

WutheringTights · 21/08/2020 10:55

Formby beach. Sorry.

Kittythepink · 21/08/2020 12:59

@underneaththeash they are aged between 5-10.

Thank you, everyone. Some wonderful places to research and add to my jar.

Please keep them coming Smile
