To have singing lessons

I have an OK voice. As in, I was in the choir at school, people always comment nicely (and in surprise, haha) if I sing along in the car, and I always win at SingStar karaoke.

So I can hold a tune, but only if I am singing along to someone else. When I am left to my own devices, it goes off key very quickly Blush.

I would like singing lessons for fun, because I like to sing, and to see if I can get a bit better. But I am not sure if lessons could do anything for someone who is never going to be a great singer! Are lessons only really for people who sing really well? Would I be better taking up an instrument instead?

TIA!

Voice is an instrument! Do it!

Thank you, I hadn’t thought of it that way!!

It’ll be your fault if there are complaints of tone deaf squawking though GrinGrinGrin

I am similar to you. I joined a choir run by a lovely lady who also gives lessons. I was very unsure, but decided to give it a go. I only had a few before lockdown but was really enjoying it. Already my breathing and range had improved. That in turn was helping my pitch.

I think having a teacher you get on with really matters, so if you're not enjoying it, shop around until you find one you click with.

My teacher reckons she could help most people improve with just a few lessons.

Give it a go!

Thank you too, that sounds great. Really glad you’re enjoying it and hope you get back to it when things are back to normal!

"I would like singing lessons for fun, because I like to sing, and to see if I can get a bit better."

That's all the reason you need. Go for it!

I had singing lessons in my early thirties, for about a year, and to this day I'm so glad I did it. I learned good technique, it was really enjoyable and satisfying - and, unexpectedly, it gave me confidence. It led to me joining a music group, where I met lovely people and we did performances - it was great! Just broadened my world, really.

I used to be scared while practising at home that my neighbours would hear (of course they did), and it took a little while before I felt comfortable 'letting go' and just going for it. But I just developed a 'F*ck it, this is what I'm doing' mindset, which fortunately has never left me since!

Good luck, and have fun!

This is me. I've been thinking about it, too.

My niece has singing lessons but she's naturally talented and amazing. I'm so jealous.

My piano teacher also does singing lessons and she has no shortage of students in both areas. In fact, I think she is fully subscribed with a waiting list. Hope this encourages you.
