Is this dance/song too sexy for our wedding?

Sakalibre · 20/08/2020 19:00

Hi, I'm very newly engaged.

My fiance's family is from a part of India where it is customary for the bride and her sisters/bridesmaids to perform a dance during the reception.

My dad is also Indian (Punjabi Sikh) but performing a dance is not the norm.

I have chosen a song and dance but my mother (who is not even Indian) is objecting on account of it being inappropriate. Her objections are based on the fact the song is apparently too sensual.

Ultimately, I know my fiance would appreciate my choice as the song is performed by his childhood crush.

Tbh, I just find a lot of Bollywood alternatives cheesy - no offence.

This is the song for ref:

Is it too sensual?

translation:
The drummer is playing the drums
Kadhi tijro ghaghro najaro baaje re haan The scenery is ringing by the beauty of your skirt
Mehboob mere O lover of mine
Mehboob mere mehboob mere teri aankhon se mujhe peene de O lover of mine, let me drink from your eyes
Kuch dard hai mere seene mein There's some pain in my heart
Mujhe mast mahaul mein jeene de Let me live in an intoxicated atmosphere
Mujhe mast mahaul mein jeene de Let me live in an intoxicated atmosphere
Mujhe mast mahaul mein jeene de Let me live in an intoxicated atmosphere
Mehboob mere mehboob mere teri aankhon se mujhe peene de O lover of mine, let me drink from your eyes

Mujhe mast mahaul mein jeene de Let me live in an intoxicated atmosphere
Mujhe mast mahaul mein jeene de Let me live in an intoxicated atmosphere

Mehboob ki mehbooba tarse, sach kehde pyar yeh kab barse Your beloved is yearning, tell me honesty when will you shower your love
Main teri dulhan ban'ne ko nikli hoon saj dhaj ke ghar se I've left from my house to become your bride

Samjho woh jeeta jispe dil haari That person shall win, for whom my heart will fall
Haan ishq mohabbat karle tu, yeh pal na thehrenge kal ko You fall in love as these moments won't wait
Aa narmi le meri aankhon se kuch pata nahi kya ho kal ko Take some softness from my eyes, as no one knows what will happen tomorrow

@ChilliesAndSpice

I have never heard of the bride having to do a dance like this, I am Punjabi Indian and the bride is expected to be a little bit shy - not doing a sexy number!

However if you do have to do this, I suggest Prem Ratan Tan Payo. You can find it easily on YouTube. It’s a lovely ‘family’ song about love being more precious than money/jewels.

I second this. Even if you don’t like that particular song, find one similar to it. It needs to be more Michael Buble and less Cardi B!
Bluntness100 · 20/08/2020 21:55

Seriously I can’t imagine any wedding where the bride got up and rocked those moves op, 🤣

Do it on Your wedding night, in the privacy of your room, for your husband only. Honestly everyone else would just be cringing themselves inside out.

How about Kajra re?

Sakalibre · 20/08/2020 22:02

It's hardly WAP

I have spent the last 2 hours on youtube and still can't find anything simple enough and to my taste!

I was also thinking Kajra Re. The lyrics are so lovely.

Chezacheza · 20/08/2020 22:08

I love it Grin

I've been to a couple of weddings plus some parties where the bridge or birthday girl performs, yes a couple were cheesy Bollywood numbers but a couple of times (one wedding, one party ) they chose western music (Latin American in one case) but more Bollywood style dancing. We had been daring the bride to do the Timewarp, she said she would be disowned if they googled the storyline of the movie (fair point some of her relatives are rather old school, they were not overly pleased with her choice of white husband!)

Sakalibre · 20/08/2020 22:18

I like Kajra re but it seems equally as raunchy to me!

Oh I love Prem Ratan Dhan Payo!

I would go for something tame/old school/traditional yet beautiful, it would save you from stressing about what people are saying. Weddings are so much about family, best to keep it family-appropriate. There is so much beautiful stuff to choose from!

@MercedesDeMonteChristo

I haven’t read everything yet, but to be honest any item number is going to be sensual, they all have lots of hip movement. We had loads of belly dancing but for us it was normal but my mum still thinks it’s overtly sexual. Personally, I would go Laila Main Laila (the new version - but that would prob keel over all the aunties).

In short I think it’s fine.

I really wouldn’t, the lyrics of that song are not what you want to song at your own wedding!
CrazyToast · 20/08/2020 22:24

Ive seen some nice wedding dances done to Manwa Laage?

Something amusing like Dard de Disco or Kala Cheshma?

Or depending on where they are from, some nice ghoomer dance?

burblish · 20/08/2020 22:47

I have always absolutely loved that song and Sushmita Sen is such a knockout in the video - but yes, probably not the right choice for a wedding performance! You could go old skool with something like “Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna”, or a couple of more recent songs which are easy to make up your own choreography for are “Morni Banke” and “London Thumakda” (as a bonus, both are also shout outs to your Punjabi roots!). I saw “Kajra Re” mentioned - that isn’t raunchy at all. You could also play it very safe by picking a Bhangra number, as your dad is Punjabi. Couple of ideas there.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 21/08/2020 08:16

What about this? Medley of nostalgia so people can sing a long etc. This would make people smile in my circles. I accept it has a level of cheese.

FlySheMust · 21/08/2020 08:19

I'd be embarrassed for you watching that.
