Taking the piss...

I totally get that Covid has screwed many businesses and that some have to try anything to survive. However one business has now lost my custom forever. It was a second hand bookshop. A big one. VERY big. Their books are all donated (except the vintage ones possibly). Prior to lockdown they had a huge warehouse and they had hundreds of thousands of books (literally). They were £1 each. (except vintage which in general were £2). Went back recently and due to the requirements of SD the layout has changed, so far fewer books on the shelves they are now in the warehouse and you have to look up on a computer what you want, fill out a single form for each book with their reference number on it - give it to them and they will find it and bring it out. (I had 20 and it took about 10 mins for them to get them, so not a long wait). All fair enough - until I realised that every book was now £2! A 100% increase! Vintage books are now £4.
I used to spend a LOT of money there, but no more. I wouldn't spend £2 on a book from a charity shop, why would I from this seller? AIBU? Is 100% price rise acceptable?

You're being ridiculous OP.

Also would love to know the name of the shop.

IncandescentSilver · 20/08/2020 15:10

I think thats quite a lot of extra work for them actually and the increase is fair.

GabsAlot · 20/08/2020 15:11

@WhenISnappedAndFarted sorry to go ot love the name

ErinBrockovich · 20/08/2020 15:11

£2 a book is a good deal OP. YABU.

GinWithRosie · 20/08/2020 15:12

Get over yourself 😂

BaronessBomburst · 20/08/2020 15:13

£2 per book is a damn sight cheaper than eBay. YABU

Fairyliz · 20/08/2020 15:16

Are these just ordinary paperbacks? They are 3 for a £1 at the charity I volunteer at and we sell very few.

SquirtleSquad · 20/08/2020 15:20

This sounds wonderful to me!!! Is it anywhere near Dorset ? I'd love to go.

Starbuggy · 20/08/2020 15:30

YABU

£2 is very cheap for a book, even second hand! I never see any for less than that in any of the charity shops near me.

If you don’t want to pay it then don’t. But YABU to act like you’ve spent a fortune in there (on £1 books Hmm) and YABU to be so appalled at cheap books!

fashu · 20/08/2020 15:46

whilst it is still cheap its a bit cheeky to double the price?

MitziK · 20/08/2020 15:48

Have a look at the prices charged in Oxfam bookshops.

You'll be heading straight back to your £2 a book place pretty sharpish.

Alfiemoon1 · 20/08/2020 15:52

£2 per book sounds cheap to me where is it

diplodocusinermine · 20/08/2020 15:56

Thanks, people, I have just bought 9 books from Bookbarn....Hmm Grin

HyacynthBucket · 20/08/2020 16:01

Are you serious? Think of all the extra work and arrangements that have had to be put in place, and the loss of business during lockdown, and their prices are still super-reasonable. Cannot understand why you have taken umbrage here. YABVU. Give them a break and a bit of understanding.

HorsePellets · 20/08/2020 16:04

Missing the point......what’s the difference between second hand and vintage?

Oh, and YABU.

CovidSadness · 20/08/2020 16:19

With a choice of hundreds if not thousands of books which are catalogued so you have a list to choose from surely a better comparison would be with a normal bookshop. We have 2 charity Secondhand bookshops locally which are good but the books are way more than 2 pounds unless they are children’s or are on the bargain shelves. We also have a small somewhat niche secondhand bookshop , again the books are way more than 2 pounds and even before Covid I’ve no idea how the owner made a living out of it and it hasn’t reopened as yet, maybe it won’t?
A normal charity shop may have books from 50p or so but the selection is small and subject matter usually restricted to trashy novels or cookbooks and dog eared children’s books. YABU

FrostyGirl66 · 20/08/2020 16:28

I also want to know what this company is called. I love second hand books!!

WitchQueenofDarkness · 20/08/2020 16:29

It must be the Bookbarn in Hallatrow from the description.

I used to visit frequently when it was in the old barn but good buys in there have been few and far between for a long time now. The one time I did request something from the warehouse they put it on the counter and someone else picked it up and bought it!

Valleydad99 · 20/08/2020 16:39

I would also like to go to this shop please. Link?

YANBU, don't want to pay the prices, don't buy. But you can't complain, they can charge what they want.

SingingSands · 20/08/2020 16:57

Well you're paying more because now there is staff labour involved in looking for and collecting your book.

And for £2 that's an absolute bargain!

Bookbarn you all say? I'm going to have to investigate!

pigsDOfly · 20/08/2020 16:59

I'd love a secondhand bookshop like that near me, and at £2 a book I'd be there all the time.

Used to have one where I lived years ago. Sadly went out of business.

My local library is still closed so I've been buying new books from an online company, most paperbacks are around the £8/£9 mark but still worth it to me as trying to get them from the main library for our area is a major hassle.

£2 a book? What's not to love?

I doubt OP is coming back but I'd love to know why £2 a book is so horrifying.

I get that there's been a 100% increase in the price but when it a 100% increase on top of practically giving them away I really couldn't get worked up about it.

pigsDOfly · 20/08/2020 17:03

Just googled Bookbarn they do online orders. So will have a browse.

Wondering now if OP is the owner trying to drum up business by getting a bit of free advertising and sympathy.

Beautiful3 · 20/08/2020 17:05

I actually think that's cheap! Covid has hit them hard, it's either close down or raise prices. I'd rather it still traded and buy a book to support the business, and peoples jobs.
