AIBU to ask... if you could ask a nutritionist anything about weight loss, what would it be?

Just that really. I'm putting together a myth busting type of document and would love to hear what people would ask a nutritionist about weightloss.

I am a bit bemused by this new channel 4 diet show, I watched the first episode. It isn’t much of a revelation that dropping to 800 calories per day will cause weight loss. Don’t we all know that you restrict calories to lose weight? The problem is that it is bloody hard to stick to and maintain this discipline.

What qualifications do you need to become a nutritionist?

HoneysuckIejasmine · 19/08/2020 21:17

@UnaOfStormhold

I wouldn't ask a nutritionist anything. A dietician on the other hand...
This.
BadDucks · 19/08/2020 21:35

@PurpleDaisies you don’t need a single qualification to call yourself a nutritionist

Thank you all, some really good questions.

To those that wouldn't ask a nutritionist anything, I suppose this thread wasn't really for you then, but you all raise a really important point about knowing the qualifications and experience of the person you are trusting with your diet. I totally agree that the term nutritionist is very unprotected and therefore should be looked into carefully when engaging with one... if you choose to.

No MLM here- I'm not trying to sell anyone anything, nor am I trying to push meal plans on anyone. Just genuinely doing some research so thank you for your time :)

A cat qualified as a nutritionist is definitely something I would be interested in seeing though! :)

Have a lovely evening

What’s wrong with carbs !! I love carbs

Bravefarts · 19/08/2020 23:06

Google Ben Goldacre's cat.

Nutritionist is quack bollocks. You want a dietician.

peachypetite · 20/08/2020 08:54

Agree you want a dietician. Pretty much anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.

Franticbutterfly · 20/08/2020 08:57

I would ask how to improve insulin sensitivity.

Also why I can exercise for hours and eat low calorie and the scales don't move? So calories in vs calories out doesn't work for everyone.

ragged · 20/08/2020 10:27

My guess is that Diabetes UK gives out reliable advice on improving insulin sensitivity. What you eat isn't part of their picture, beyond losing body fat. So maybe not much role for a nutritionist to advise.
