Im furious

Omg I'm furious. I've been put forward for an urgent gastro opinion as I've been going the docs for 2 years with diarrhoea. The last few months I'm getting up to poo in the night and I have left sided pain. I ended up in hospital and the doc thought I was in a Ibd flare up so asked gp to chase up gastro again. I've been given a date for an appointment urgently which I assumed would be a scope but I've had a letter today and it appears to be a telephone consultation. A telephone consultation when I'm practically incontinent in my 30s passing maroon stool??

Well you would have to have a consultation first I assume and you’ve got one. I would wait and see what happens next first.

Pelleas · 19/08/2020 17:38

Where I am the doctors are only doing telephone consultations, no matter how urgent the problem - they are still referring people for tests but the consultations are by phone. Is it possible there's another appointment being booked for the tests that hasn't reached you yet?

Hoping you can see someone ASAP Flowers

Dancingonmylonesome · 19/08/2020 17:53

I've had a consultation in a private hospital via the nhs prior to this. I've been put to the local hospital as they're doing urgent scopes

Levels of inflammation in my stool are really high

Don't worry. After the telephone consultation you'll be onto the next step.

Everything has been held up and doctors are seeing as few people as possible face to face. Many are offering Zoom-type meetings.

Sounds like you are getting somewhere. Good luck.

Dancingonmylonesome · 19/08/2020 18:16

Itll be another 2 years before I get seen probably.

That's terrible, you poor thing. We really do have a terrible health service and you're being badly let down

Sirzy · 19/08/2020 18:19

As tough as it is the consultant in charge of the procedures will always want to talk to the patient first to establish the best course of action to take from their professional judgement

bg21 · 19/08/2020 18:20

I've had this recently, they will phone you to discuss and then they book you in for the surgery, its like a pre op over the phone

QueenietheCutie · 19/08/2020 18:21

I was referred to gastro team for very similar thing. And the protocol here is a phone call with them first (even pre covid) so they can decide best option. I had a call last week and they made an appointment for a month's time for a scope.
Sadly my situation got worse and I am now in hospital! But it's definitely how the gastro team work in my area (Dorset) 🤷‍♀️

Dancingonmylonesome · 19/08/2020 18:23

It's a waste of my time and their money I know its colitis so why dont they play ball and do the scope.

OP posts:
Greenglassteacup · 19/08/2020 18:32

Well they will do but first you need to speak to the gastroenterologist over the phone.

Dancingonmylonesome · 19/08/2020 18:36

I've seen a gastroenterologist in private hospital that works for the NHS also

Because you’re not a doctor and if they took everyone’s word for what they had based on a google session they would spend £££ on unnecessary tests (although maybe save on medical school fees).

Pud2 · 19/08/2020 18:44

I think this is fairly normal procedure is t it? Consultation first, and then tests if needed.....

Multiplying2020 · 19/08/2020 18:44

Why do you know it's colitis OP - have you had other tests that point to it?

time4anothername · 19/08/2020 18:45

When is the phone appointment for? You must explain all your symptoms no holds barred and the high inflammation markers so you get scoped asap or treatment. Scopes have been a problem during Covid as the virus is found in stool and scopes do produce aerosols but you must not be left without treatment, you could lose your bowel if you develop toxic megacolon as can happen with long term untreated IBD. Keep pushing for treatment asap.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 19/08/2020 18:46

What @PotteringAlong said.

This seems fairly normal right now, my DM broke her knee and on the follow up she had to have a phone consultation before they would book her in for a scan to see how it is.

Multiplying2020 · 19/08/2020 18:46

Have you been checked for faecal occult blood/ faecal calprotectin at all?

DorisDances · 19/08/2020 18:48

I had a phone consultation and then had a colonoscopy within the week. It was a gateway rather than a barrier to treatment. That was an the basis of a bowel cancer concern so fast track. Hope you get sorted soon- bowel issues are miserable

Dancingonmylonesome · 19/08/2020 18:51

I'm a nurse I have all the signs and high calcoprotectin levels

OP posts:
lateSeptember1964 · 19/08/2020 18:53

We’re currently doing telephone consultations wherever possible. This is instead of a face 2 face If the Consultant thinks you need. Colonoscopy it will be booked in the usual way. You will not need a face 2 face to access a Colonoscopy

Bufferingkisses · 19/08/2020 18:56

If you're a nurse you know full well no one is going to order invasive tests without so much as talking to you first. Stop being ridiculous, they have to consult before testing. You do the phone appointment, they order the tests, job done.

Choppedupapple · 19/08/2020 18:56

Once you have the telephone appointment you will likely get the scope within a couple of days, my consultant did same. When’s your telephone appointment for?

Toomboom · 19/08/2020 18:56

I had this last year when it was thought I had possible bowel cancer [ pre covid ]. You get the call to access you, then an appointment on their findings. Mine was within two weeks.
It does sound as though it could be crohns or colitis. Hopefully you will get sorted soon.
