to change my name?

semi light-hearted i guess, i've never liked my name or felt like it was mine. i don't have an idea for what i'd like to change it to, but i know i do want to change it. i feel like i'd be okay with my parents and family calling me by my birth name, but any new people i meet, i'd like to be able to say 'my name is ...' rather than 'my name is sophie*'. aibu?

Go for it op!!
What sort of name do you fancy?. I don't like my name either.. Some of dc's friends have questioned if it's my real name it's so odd!!

Alwaysoutofreach · 19/08/2020 15:45

Its not uncommon to be referred to by a different name.
I work with a number of people who do, I only knew because the system we use automatically changes their name to the 'birth/official name'

folklord · 19/08/2020 15:45

I would. I informally changed mine once but changed it back to when I moved to a new area. I am toying with formally changing it to my nickname which everyone calls me anyway but it's just a bit too informal sounding so I haven't due to work. I've changed surname and middle names via deed poll and it's dead easy

What about Princess Consuela BananaHammock?

sugagi · 19/08/2020 15:54

@Crunchymum oooh thank you for the inspo! adding that to the list WinkGrin honestly, i don't know what name i fancy, i'm moving to korea soon (teaching job! very excited Smile) so i think i'd want to go for something fairly simple iyswim, but still very pretty! anyone got any suggestions?

TinySleepThief · 19/08/2020 15:59

Absolutely change it, now is the prefct time especially if you're about to move to a new job and new country.

Although Princess Consuela BananaHammock does seem to be growing in popularity so I would suggest Crap Bag instead. First name Crap last name Bag. Wink

JoleneExotic · 19/08/2020 16:03

Go for it. My name isn't Jolene, but I don't use my birth name for anything but official purposes.

CoconutsHaveWaterInThem · 19/08/2020 16:04

@Crunchymum I like Regina Phalange better 🤣

Go for it OP!!

sugagi · 19/08/2020 16:05

thanks for all the encouragement Smile i'm still stuck on what to choose.
like i said i would probably go for a shorter, more simple name but one that is still very pretty. i shift between wanting a very feminine name and a more androgynous one, although i'll probably go with more feminine. i do like the name lavender but i'm aware it's very outdated, and not short and simple like i wanted! I did this. I changed my name, not legally, when I got to college.

missmouse101 · 19/08/2020 21:22

Hebe, Hazel, Tamsin?

Enough4me · 19/08/2020 21:27

Could you adapt your name?
For example Sophie could become Sophia or Phoebe.

Or maybe go for Hannah as Koreans use Hana as a female name:
