Fire pit - WIBU?

IlanaWexler · 19/08/2020 15:07

We're having our back garden landscaped next year and I really want to get a fire pit, but I don't want our neighbours to hate us. How would you feel about a neighbour who installed a fire pit under these conditions?

• At least 15 metres from any houses
• 3 metres from any fences or trees (which is the recommended distance for fire safety)
• Will only use low-smoke fuel (charcoal, briquettes or dry wood, never smoky green wood or rubbish)
• Will only use it on colder evenings when windows are likely closed
• Will check for laundry in neighbours gardens before lighting it

These articles may not apply exactly to OP, but it's nonsense to say that wood burning is harmless

If I can smell smoke and have to close the windows because of it, I will strongly dislike you.

KittyKatChonky · 11/05/2021 18:53

I’d still hate the neighbour 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, what’s the point?

WouldBeGood · 11/05/2021 18:53

We’re all going to die!!!! The neighbour has a fire pit!!

Smoke goes so well with the current pandemic...

We have a fire pit, got it last summer and have probably used it 3 or 4 times and it has been for birthdays/after a bbq. Pain in the arse to clean, but a joy to sit around.

I must say I was cringing the first couple of times because it stunk ! We'd shoved wet wood on it without knowing and I felt a little out of order to our neighbours (despite lighting it down the bottom end of the garden)

However, the last two times we have used fire logs/heat logs and they hardly smoke or smell. We stink after as we are all gathered around it but no complaints or worries from our neighbours.

Like Someone else said, the noise we make is probably more annoying as it postpones your evenings!!

@SnuggyBuggy

I think this is just a thing on MN. In the real world loads of people have firepits and BBQs and as long as they aren't belching out smoke all over the neighbourhood no one is bothered
I'm bothered when my selfish neighbours light theirs when my washings out or at night when it's hot and we have to close all our windows. I hate the fucking things.
EggysMom · 11/05/2021 19:30

I figure if my neighbour can light his barbecue in the middle of the afternoon (when I have washing on the line) then it's fair game for me to light our fire pit in the middle of the evening onwards.

you should see my local FB groups! The laundry & shoes on/off MN are NOTHING compared to the smoke fights Grin

and I agree with people. How often you change your bedsheet and what you wear at home has no impact on anyone. Your smoke does!

lemonjam · 11/05/2021 19:59

I don’t think you’d be unreasonable, but since you ask I really really really hate it when neighbours have fires in their garden and I’d quietly hate you while it was going. Think that might be my issue though, I have such a sensitive sense of smell!

scaredsadandstuck · 11/05/2021 20:27

You could always look into getting one landscaped in that has a decent chimney - it might help you and your neighbours with the smoke

BeneathYourWisdom · 11/05/2021 20:39

Depends how big your garden is and how often you intend to use the fire pit? Do you have neighbours on both sides? Will you only use it at night or in the day too?

If you’re rural and have lots of space, I’d go for it. If urban and have a smallish garden I think it’s unfair on the neighbours as will be like bonfire smoke drifting into their houses and gardens constantly.

If you plan to use it say once a month when friends come over on a summer evening I think that’s ok as not very different to having a bbq.
