Could those regularly using London Underground tell me how busy it is? Can you social distance easy enough?

Asking here for traffic.

Some great deals currently for stays in London but the only fly in the ointment would be the underground.

For those using it daily or those who have recently visited, how are you/have you found it?

Depends on the time of day, where you are and what line. In the centre, during rush hour it gets crowed.

SmileTolerantly · 19/08/2020 12:01

Often very empty indeed but not always. If I were you I’d aim to stay very centrally, wear comfy shoes, and take the bus where necessary (download Citymapper onto your phone and that will make the buses much easier).

LucyTamedOgres · 19/08/2020 12:02

It probably would be central London, we’d try and avoid peak times. Just wondered if it was a lot quieter than usual.

It's not like before but peak times near impossible to social distance. Mask wearing hit & miss, not seen any non wearers pulled up for it yet.

LucyTamedOgres · 19/08/2020 12:04

@SmileTolerantly thank you, I’ve used the Citymapper App in the past, found it really useful. Where we’re thinking of staying would require a tube ride for ease really.

It’s a tad quieter, in my experience, but not really. Peak times are a bit mad. If you don’t HAVE to use it, I wouldn’t. Just take good walking shoes and plan your routes. Buses have been much quieter than usual but I haven’t really needed to use them.

LucyTamedOgres · 19/08/2020 12:06

@Kamma89 thanks, that’s interesting about mask wearing, although many reasons why people can’t wear them. Would avoid peak times if impossible to social distance. We always try to walk to the end carriages too as most people dive for the central ones.

Apart from peak times its fairly quiet, outside of peak times we have always managed to get a seat.

LucyTamedOgres · 19/08/2020 12:09

@ShellsAndSunrises thanks, must be difficult if you can’t avoid using the tube.

Are they doing deep cleans? Probably not as they’re constantly used, except through the night?

@SimonJT thanks, that’s good to know.

Pretty packed IME, but busses are okay, ubers are plentiful and you can get bikes everywhere. I'd come but not use the tube.

Palavah · 19/08/2020 12:28

Yep - it depends!

Masks are obligatory unless you have an exemption, so don't expect to have a 2m radius around you at all times.

Some stations still closed and not all night tubes running so check before you go.

And as is normal, it's hot before you put a mask on so dress appropriately.

nevermorelenore · 19/08/2020 12:36

Any overground stations near where you are staying? Overground is usually less packed and you can get from the outskirts of London to central stations then walk. I sometimes find buses easier than the tube too, plus you get a nice view on your journey.

It's been fine - better than the buses which were empty a few weeks ago but are now getting quite busy. I went into central London from the suburbs last week - before 9am - and there was plenty of room. I was surprised as normally I travel off-peak. Plenty of hand-sanitiser everywhere. I wear gloves in case I inadvertently touch handrails etc
There's still people eating on the Tube - yeuggh, I really wouldn't fancy that! It's a great time to visit London - bit annoying having to book things in advance but no crowds!

I was on the Jubilee Line on Monday. It was a bit quieter than usual and easy enough to leave a seat free between people. There was a group of kids without masks and shouting but otherwise everyone seemed pretty compliant. I would have walked if it was an option but had to get to Canary Wharf.
