I cannot pass a driving test

So long story short, I attempted to pass my drive test when I was 17 and failed miserably 3 times. First my driving instructor pushed me too early, 2nd I thought I’d pass and didn’t and third my driving instructor lost interest so I had 8 weeks of no driving before a test and obviously failed...

17 years later I’m here again much to my annoyance (husband pushing it, I have two kids now and I hate my job so driving would probably sort both).

Absolutely love my driving instructor, he’s completely different to the one when I had when I was younger and had made me like driving. Today I had my first test and failed within 10 minutes. I’m so upset. I’m a really competent driver outside of test but I just lose it at test.

Can anyone help me workout what to do?! I’m properly heartbroken today (I feel 17 again and can’t shake it).

How do you pass? I feel like an idiot

It took me 5 tests to pass, I was so nervous my clutch leg was shaking so bad I couldn't hold the clutch down. What helped was after taking the first four tests with the head examiner & failing, my final test I got a lady, i got more minor faults than I ever got in my previous tests but I passed.

I failed twice, passed third time at 30. My instructor said for my third test to book beginning of week and earlyish in morning around 10 (after rush hour) he had a theory that the assessors have a certain percentage they aim for to pass and fail..if they go overly above or below the centre average it flags up. He reckoned there was more chance of being failed for something minor at the end of the week if the assessor had passed alot of people already that week than the beginning of the week. It worked and I passed. I took a beat blocker and ate a banana third time and pretended I was driving my ill grandma and she was just giving me directions and I had to drive carefully with her in the car.

Haven't RTFT as just nipped on but I was the same. Took 5 tests before I passed (8 years between the 4th and final!)

Took my instructor out with me so I had someone on my side and could help if I failed.

He told me if I was nervous it was OK to ask to pull over and have a quick breather.

I had to drive the one rest route I hadn't practiced (dunno why!) and was pretty sure I'd ended up in the wrong lane on a dodgy roundabout so kind of relaxed a bit.. But nerves kicked back in as I was over thinking whether my instinct about failing was right. So when I was asked to pull up on the left and then pull out when clear I stopped the car and asked for a break and promptly burst into tears Grin after that I just thought oh fuck it. And the release was what I needed.

I got back to the test centre and had 4 minors. 4 of which I picked up pulling back in! My instructor said he could tell that I was thinking omg maybe I have actually passed?!

When he said he was pleased to say I'd passed I cried again! Hahaha such relief.

Anyway... Moral of the story. Take a breather if you need to. Even the best driver in the world would stop if needed and it shows you're being sensible.

If you're nervous tell the examiner. And take your instructor because a familiar face does really help even though they can't say anything!

Good luck to you. You can do it!

It took me 8 goes Blush but I got there.

Like you I just couldn't seem to pass but could drive well.

Please keep going!

I passed on my seventh time.

I did not tell a soul on this test and I told my self it was just another hour of experience on the road. If I failed no one would know. I also imagined my dd day in the back.

I was the calmest I’d ever been

It took me 18 months and 4 tests (within 5 months) to pass. There was nothing that helped me pass. I read tips, watched YouTube videos, got advice from friends and family, took beta blockers for the 3rd and 4th and took my instructor with me on the 4th. I honestly don't think any of the different things I tried made a difference in the end it was just perseverance that got me through.

The annoying thing was I kept failing on majors and barely any minors. First 2 tests I failed for approaching junctions too quickly and only 2 or 3 minors. 3rd test I failed my parallel park. On the 4th and final test I was asked to do a reverse bay park before we left the test centre. I hated this maneuver (still do!) and I very nearly stopped the test there and then I was shaking and almost crying and was convinced then I'd failed so couldn't believe it when he told me I'd passed.

I also had the same examiner 2nd, 3rd and 4th and he was very friendly and made me feel relaxed when he introduced himself but as soon as the test started he made me feel really intimidated so I think maybe having my instructor in the back played a
small part when I finally passed.

I did not tell a soul on this test

I did that as well. Nobody knew I was taking my test apart from husband. Not having that attention beforehand helped.

Please keep going, I failed 3 tests as I was a bag of nerves. Now been driving 30 years and am a good safe driver. Don't give up. Don't count the tests, it doesn't matter a toss how many it takes. Thanks

IndieTara · 21/08/2020 15:34

I passed on my 5th attempt. I failed 3 times initially then left it for 5 years, tried again and passed on my 5th test. It can be done
