To think the gp’s at it

Ds2 has reflux.. ds1 had reflux but was ff so treated with ranitidine and carobel.

Ds2 was given gaviscon, he’s a bottle refusing bf baby.. giving him it was like giving a cat a bag of pills. He’d vomit most of it back down me with the air swallowed from the screaming.. I gave him it through a bloody sns at one point just to try, all it done was constipate him and make his wind even harder to pass.. more screaming.

She said she wouldn’t prescribe anything else until we’d spoken to a dietician, they recommended medication. She didn’t prescribe it.. because he’s not loosing weight, probably because he’s got a tit in his mouth unless he’s screaming like a stray banshee. Seriously he feeds constantly with stretches of an hour max between feeds (22weeks).

I’ve got the same gp again for him on Friday, I’m off my head going back it’ll be a massive waste of time, he’ll do nothing but scream because he’s in the buggy.. so his brother will scream because he freaks out at the noise.. and I’ll walk the whole way there and back in tears. Because I’m a complete shit show of a parent. And I can’t afford a £200 run in with an osteopath considering it might not help and he might need 5-6 treatments... Unless anyone’s interested in my kidney?

Why is she being a twat? Is omeprazole or whatever else they can give actually complete poison? Is there a reason she enjoys the madness of telling me no and changing goal posts?

Although we weaned early, the food we could get him to taje was extremely limited. Poor DS was so mistrustful of everything that it really just boiled down to mushy pastes or fruits. Even now, he really struggles with textures and, while I know he's 6 and fussy, I am convinced a lot of his issues around food stem from the memories of being hideously uncomfortable.

DS only did a 4h stretch when he was 18m. I look back on it and get so angry at howy genuine concern for my child's well-being and health was dismissed as 'first time mum' syndrome.

DS still takes omeprazole as he is sick multiple times a day, often after acidic and dairy food and exercise. Cutting down high fodmap foods has helped but really the only thing that ensures he isn't sick is the medication.

I have a stockpile of it if you're nearby!!

CatherinedeBourgh · 18/08/2020 21:58

There can be other allergies too, for ds2 it was eggs.

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/08/2020 22:02

@Y0ubetterwerk You are most likely right. Our DS is 6 and has huge issues with food avoidance. We've been under specialists since he was 2 years old and they have said that his food phobias have stemmed from all of his problems with reflux.

rach2713 · 18/08/2020 22:35

I feel your pain I had 1 daughter with reflux who got treated very quick as she was being sick after each feed but my 3rd was 4 months of crying and only cat napping all day then screaming 3 hours before crashing all night to sleep for the hv to say leave her in her cot to cry to give me a break. I rang the doctors after she left crying screaming got a appointment with a doctor who took one look at her and said she had silent reflux I cried as he was the only person to listen to me was put on medicine and was a new baby. I would try and see a different doctor if you can I was at the point off going up to the a&e to see what would be done I was that desperate..

Crystalisedpeanuts · 19/08/2020 11:38

No one would take us to a&e. No one would watch the toddler either. I have cut out more than dairy. The only allergen left is tiny amounts of soy, can’t find alternative snack foods with out it or yoghurts locally. But I’ll attempt to cut it out.

To be fair this is looking like another day I’ll eat a bag of crisps until bedtime. Ds1’s in a foul mood hitting, biting, head butting and tantrums. Ds2s ok for now he managed to soak me so there’s hopefully nothing trapped to cause him any problems immediately.. but it’s like they’re taking bloody shifts

Good luck tomorrow OP. I hope you emerge with a referral to paediatric gastroenterology.

Re PPIs like Omeprazole and Lansoprazole, clearly, these are powerful medicines, and nobody should be taking them without need, as there are side effects, especially babies. However, there are also serious downsides to NOT taking them if indicated.

I was reluctant to switch DD to Lansoprazole from Ranitidine (this is before the contamination issue with Ranitidine), as I was worried about the long term effects. The consultant paediatric gastroenterologist was very clear that she definitely wanted DD on it, because constant non or under-medicated reflux is a risk for oesophageal cancer in the long-term, and can cause other undesirable changes in the oesophagus, creating other medics problems.

Of course, there’s also the comfort of the child to consider and I’m afraid I’m not impressed with your GP being prepared to leave your child in constant pain without attempting to identify and resolve the issue. It’s cruel in the there and now, and I would also be concerned about the long-term psychological impact of starting life in constant pain. It could also affect his eating down the line.

You need an expert view at this point.

Let us know how you get on.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 20/08/2020 06:54

Just coming on to say I hope you're ok OP. One of mine had reflux and it was hell, a really shit time. My other DC also suffered because the baby took up so much of my time.
Hang in there, and good luck with the GP

AyeCorona1 · 20/08/2020 07:25

I ended up taking us both to A&E at 3am and announced that I couldn't take it any more. I'm sure there were lots of eyebrows being raised and questions about referrals to ss but dd did her thing after yet another feed, we saw the paed and left with medication.

YY to recording your ds discomfort. Request a second opinion. Tell hv that this is having a huge impact on you all and you are spiralling out of control due to the distress and lack of sleep.

iMatter · 20/08/2020 07:43

I really don't have much to add OP but sending you lots of sympathy

Ds2 was like this. He screamed for hours every day and used to projectile vomit everywhere. Evenings were hideous.

I took him to the GP who also did the "babies cry" shit and who told me "some mothers do better than others". I hated her in that moment. Serious lack of help and support and I will never forget it.

I hope you manage to get some help Thanks

Zitouna · 20/08/2020 08:00

Hi OP - massive sympathies from me. We ended up with ranitidine - I was all prepared to insist but the GP was happy to prescribe - I know we were lucky.

Just checking where you’re based? If by chance it’s London - the Osteopathic Centre for Children here is a charity, and will treat your baby for free or as much as you can afford. They were wonderful for us - the medication was V important too, but the osteopath helped with sleeping and seemed to make him (and me!) much happier.

Ontheroadtorecovery · 20/08/2020 08:15

I had to go 4 x before anyone listened and stopped saying ds had colic. Although he was ff so it was different gavicon caused Constipation but ranitidine worked much better he was a changes baby. The sleep deprivation is so hard i think OP is doing amazing consider ng this and she is not BU to say those things ngs about GP as it is highly frustrating that just because a baby is putting weight on that there distress is ignored and even more frustrating when there is no understanding for the parent.

Crystalisedpeanuts · 21/08/2020 17:22

Urgent referral to paediatrics, it apparently can’t be his gut because he’s so big on just breast milk.. not a problem last month but hey ho. Now need to wait on an appointment for that fiasco.

Glad to her you’ve finally got a referral to somebody who might know what they’re talking about, Crystallised. Fingers crossed for a speedy resolution.
